When it came out I liked it...guess I thought oooh paul's up to date. Now I think the 80s Production is really awful and very few good songs ....eh well there's Footprints isn't there. No I certainly can't find much good things to say about this. Also I'd Never Miss an opportunity to claim that Paul's Output 83 thru 93 is his weakest period

Paul had a great run from 1980-1985. #1 albums & numerous #1 hits. I believe he was a Top 5 artist of the decade at that point (1985) by record sales. Things slowed down a bit with Press to Play & Flowers, although each album had Top 40 hits. I still dont get those who say the 80s were rough for Paul?!? Compared to The Beatles, maybe

A friend of mine pointed out to me that Paul wrote, perhaps, the most honest and troubling lyrics of his entire career in the '80s. Reviewing the lyrics to songs like "Same Love," "Tough On A Tightrope" and "Only Love Remains," things weren't so rosy for The McCartneys in the 1980s.

PTP is one of my Top 3 favorite Macca studio albums post-Wings! "However Absurd" that may seem, I love this album! So what if it's dated? The '80s happened...lol
and I typically hate '80s music! "Press" is a favorite of mine to blast in the summertime when driving (plus I really like the music video). "However Absurd" always gives my chills. I really enjoy mid '80s Macca...Broad Street and all!

Not quite so in the U.S., Paul's only #1 album in that period (and his last ever) was Tug of War. McCartney II made #3 and Pipes of Peace didn't even hit the top ten, barely straggling to #15. It did better in the UK, but still only made #4. Broad Street managed to hit #1 in the UK, but by then Paul was commercial toast in the U.S., where it didn't crack the top 20.

Notes about "Press To Play": Not sure if this has been discussed before but I find "Good Times Coming" at TOTAL look back at Beatles 1967. Paul used the phrase "golden summer" in The Beatles Anthology when the Pepper sessions were discussed. Lines like "That was a golden summer, before the war... We laughed a lot that summer. La De Da." I interpreted as before things got sticky in the group's relationship. There's "That was a silly season. Was it the best? We didn't need a reason, just a rest"- about coming off endless tours and prepping Pepper when critics were saying it was over for them. Plus the phrase "I'm loving you now" tends to point towards time healing all wounds. See if you hear the song differently now. There is a boot of "Feel The Sun" with a terrific organ middle break that I wish he kept in the song. Plus a remix of "Angry" on one of the 12-inch official releases with a real beefy horn section that adds more 'smack' to his smack talk. One last note, the version of "Pretty Little Head" on "The McCartney Years" DVD is NOT the "PTP" version. Paul always seems to have cards up his sleeve when it comes to doing different things.
Actually, your name reminds me - "Yvonne" a.k.a. "Yvonne's The One" was recorded in these sessions and is one of his finest unreleased songs, yet it doesn't seem to have been seriously considered for PTP. Then there's the instrumental B-Side "Hanglide", as well as alternate mixes of "Talk More Talk", "Only Love Remains", "Press" and "Tough On A Tightrope" - in addition to the alternate "Feel The Sun" and the remixes of "Pretty Little Head" and "Angry" which you mention.

good songs great voice just too OVERPRODUCED ..Hate that drum sound on some of the songs...THAT 80'S SOUND..I just got this again..great listen
Agreed, while it's admirable that he was trying something new with that album, the production has dated it. But there are some great tunes on there...Stranglehold, Angry, Move Over Busker, Only Love Remains, Good Times Coming/Feel the Sun...all great tunes. I believe this is the only album of his where he's NEVER played a single song from it live...am I right?
Actually, he performed "Only Love Remains" live for the Royal Variety show in 1986:

Just noticed that Paul's hairstyle today is almost identical to the one here in 1986, except it was a bit darker then. That's about as close as he gets to bringing back anything from the mid '80s...lol.

I've just realised that there seem to be two versions of this album. Originally I had the cassette from, I think, 1990. This mix is quite different to the other: the whole sound of it is more crisp, and it doesn't contain the silly 1980s sound effects on Stranglehold and a few other tracks. I listened to a CD version recently (the one with extra tracks), and it did not have the depth of sound that the original release had. It was quite tinny and the music seemed more distant. I would strongly recommend fans track down the original. It has a totally different feel and must have been released on CD I'm sure.

Never seen it before. Thanks for sharing. Geez. What terrible fashion it was, the 1980's fashion. Just look at the shapeless, baggy jackets Linda and the other are wearing!

Interesting! I'll have to check that out.

I'm referring to Paul's unreleased demo from the PTP sessions, which is superior to the 10cc version.

I was surprised to find that this album is considered by many to be terrible. Honestly, it would be in my top three McCartney albums if I had to order them. I think its fantastic. If you hate it, please tell me why?
I kind of liked it and thought it was a big improvement from "Pipes Of Peace" which I really hated.

Does anyone know where I could find a release history for the album. I'd like to know which is which.

It might be possible that your old cassette was a bootleg copy of the 'rough mixes' for the album ! Various bootleg albums came out between the late 80's and mid 90's which contained rough mixes of the tracks, before various overedubs took place and, for example, processing being added to Paul's vocals and the drums to Stranglehold.
