What if There Had Been No "Wings" Band?

moptops:
If there had been no Wings, there'd never have been Rat Faced and Rat****.
Probably not. But then again, scum always rises to the top!

WingsOfMacca:
The 70's were made for rock bands. Those times were very competitive and I think that good rock was made by bands.
I agree. Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Elton John, Carly Simon, Diana Ross, James Taylor, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell had some great bands.
-
Bruce M.:
The critical negativity toward Paul's '70s work began with "Ram," before the name Wings was used. And let's be honest, some of that negativity was earned...
It's a miracle that his career survived Wild Life.

Quote of the year - lol. I would rather have root canal done than listen to something like "Bip Bop" !!!
-
Well I've just heard 'Wild Honey Pie' for the first time just now, and I'll take Bip Bop over that one any day!
-
Sadly, I must agree.
-
I'm a Bip Bop fan. Count me in. Tomorrow is the standout song on Wildlife, in spite of Linda's oohs an aahs being mixed so obscenely high that they almost ruin the track.
-
I like Dear Friend the best. Wild life is way down on my list, but not rock bottom. It's got a certain charm at times.

OMG! I have always LOVED Tomorrow.
This is another he could never sing now. Do you mean that Linda is mixed in too loudly or too high as in a high voice? I'd say she's a tad loud. But I do love that track. Don't you LET me down tomorrow. Last parts are just so freakin cool. ok gotta go blast it on the big speakers...bubye. -

Way too loud and in-the-face. This song, and many others from this album would benefit from the 'touch-up' applied to the new releases. It actually could really breathe new life into the album. Should be given the treatment more than some other albums that were just fine as they were. It's a great song, however. Love it.

SusyLuvsPaul:
I'm glad he formed "Wings"--another fascinating move on his part in a celebrated career full of them I only wish "Wings" had been more prolific, put out a few more albums than just seven albums in ten years. Is that right? Or, is that a good number of albums for ten years? Seven.
Less than the Beatles output but very prolific compared to today's standards for most artists

Remember too, the many singles Wings released through the years.

SusyLuvsPaul:
What if Paul had just released all his post-Beatles music under his name Paul McCartney and had not formed the band "Wings"? Would his music have been more, or less, appreciated? He would still have had the various line ups backing him, and Linda, on all the albums. In a way, I wish he'd done this. And put out all the same steller stuff, just under his name. Perhaps he'd have gained more critical respect and acclaim at the time. You think?
A lot of the criticism was about Linda, which really started with Ram. But when she became a touring member, the critics pounced. I remember some disparaging comment from Mick Jagger that he would never have his old lady onstage or something like that. So there was a lot of that because she was not a professional musician. She did get better, but they were a pretty rough band the first few tours.

I did always have a problem with Linda being part of the band.... and probably still do... but .... there is no way in hell I would've had the guts to do what she did.... live and all!.... I'm a hack on the guitar and don't have the guts to play shite in front of my friends.... she went some way much bigger and better than that.... I've gotta give her full credit for having absolutely amazing courage and guts to do that. She was no great singer, in fact I would prefer some of her efforts to be watered down, but she was sure as hell a person to be admired for doing it.

Linda definitely got the Yoko treatment, but it seems like she handled it exceptionally well.
-
My girlfriends and I (as 13 & 14 year olds) were mainly just jealous of her in '68/'69! My one gf called her "Face" because she didn't like the way she looked. I too admire her for having the guts to do what she did, and I think she's a fine (enough) singer. Just look at that video of her & Paul singing Hey Diddle where she harmonizes with him. She also was smart to do it so that she & the kids were always with Paul, otherwise, who knows what hanky panky he might have gotten into?

Linda's biggest contribution is not musical, it's family. She was a magnificent rock for Paul and a loving mum, who in spite of being married to a Beatle, was determined to raise her kids and be a partner to her husband as solidly and normally as possible and she did that. Regarding Wings: although she was no singer, her backing vocals largely along with the hapless Denny Laine became the signature sound of Wings. The Wings sound really began at Red Rose Speedway and with every album onwards, she and Laine proved more than adept at stylised vocalising.

Linda and the Rat. Now there's a title!
