Paul a tenor
-
I happened to catch some of a PBS TV program "the kate" of a performance by Jared Spector, one of the performers who portrayed Frankie Valli in "Jersey Boys" on Broadway. He was doing a tribute to tenors in popular music, tracing the history, singing examples from different eras, demonstrating how a tenor is such an important voice in popular music. It was quite interesting, especially when he did "Maybe I'm Amazed" as one of the examples. I've never bothered putting Paul in a category, but, yes, he definitely belongs up there as one of the best tenors in the history of popular music!

He's got even a more extended range than described there. The last note at the very end of the show each night sometimes goes up to C6 in full voice. Just as the "jamming" on 'Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five', like here:

Except he can no longer hit those notes. He's croaking them. It pains me greatly. His band mates have to sing more and more now to cover up his increasing failures on the high notes; hell, on all of the notes. Even "Live and Let Die" is no longer in his vocal range. I love Paul dearly, but IMO, he should just hang it up. He may love performing, but he just can't do it....and especially not at the $$$ prices he charges. If he loves performing so much and so constantly, make the concerts free...so people won't complain about how he sounds. To me, he's now kind of in his "Fat Elvis Stage", which is the image of him that sticks in the minds of a great many people of how Elvis was...that and his garish Vegas outfits. Does Paul want people to remember him as the guy who still toured when he could no longer sing???

I wouldn't go quite that far!
But at least "Fat Elvis" could sing!

Still, that YouTube collection pretty much sums up what I was saying a while back in the thread on the state of Paul's voice. This man was blessed with an amazing set of pipes and the knowledge and/or instinct to be able to use them with just astonishing versatility and effect. A lot of it's gone now. And yeah, it's sad, but aging is normal and at least he's still with us. But I reluctantly agree it's time to rethink touring.

Oh, I agree Bruce. I was just making a joke about Elvis.

Maybe it's time for him to finally revamp the setlist. Keep a FEW signature songs. He can draw on the rest of his brilliant catalog of songs for the rest. They may well be ones he can still sing.

Then someone should tell him...his wife??? Dave Grohl? Someone whose opinion he may actually respect and will listen to....? Who?? One would think he would just know, and do whatever is necessary instead of living in some fantasy world.

I almost thought this was going to be a topic about Paul being a tenor.

Yes, too bad it turned ugly and off topic quick.

I haven't seen anything ugly in this discussion. It's all been entirely respectful and appreciative. Realistic does not equal ugly.

It wasn't supposed to be about his current voice. There's enough threads about that elsewhere without having to derail this one.

Actually, neither the thread title nor the initial post limits the discussion to Paul's voice when he was younger.
