      Bjorn Karlsson:

      Vintage Clothes:

My own take on this is that everyone's view points are valid but that Paul should (and no doubt will) carry on doing whatever he wants to, for as long as humanly possible. I seem to remember him being asked on the Put It There DVD back in '89 if he ever saw a day when he would stop doing music. Didn't he say he wasn't even interested in the question? I think, as Paul fans, we have to accept this - it's part and parcel of the man and his music. And I think the evidence shows he's far from washed up just yet, especially when it comes to songwriting: (I Want To) Come Home, Electric Arguments, Only Our Hearts etc. Now, I accept that this means making music - both on stage and in the studio - that is good and bad (and we all have our views on which is which). But that's the nature of a true artist, surely, and certainly of Paul's career - and I, for one, celebrate it. I accept the good (My Valentine) with the bad (Nod Your Head) - only my opinion!! Whilst it pains me to say it, in my view, Paul's voice has been suffering since I first saw him live in '89. I remember my Dad saying he didn't sound as good as he used to (and I think I kind of knew it too). And only the other day I fished out my CD of Knebworth '90 (one of my very first CDs) and, frankly, didn't think Paul sounded great, especially on Coming Up. But, the thing is, in the intervening 23 years he HAS sounded fantastic, both on record and live. Personally I'd say some of his best singing ever is on Run Devil Run. He's not too shabby on Flaming Pie either, or Back In The US/World. Funny how Paul could sound much better, in my opinion, live in 2002 than he did in 1990! Maybe he's been guilty of over-using his voice over the years, and relying on 'instinct' and the fact that he's NOT musically trained in any way. Perhaps he could have protected his vocal cords more, but then what would we, as fans, missed out on? And, more importantly, would Paul have been happy?? I think, from a singing point of view, Paul should concentrate on singing in the range that works now (I personally think he sounds great on most of Kisses On The Bottom). That perhaps means not insisting on proving he can still sing I'm Down in the original key, which I think would be hard for him (to admit, I mean). I can't blame him - I for one will be over the moon if I have half the energy and vitality Paul has at (nearly) 70! But something probably does have to give, I'd agree with that, and I'd be happy to see Paul really concentrate on his strengths now, in 2012, which for me means writing and recording first and foremost. But I would not agree Paul should ditch the Olympic gig (not that he ever would). And I agree with whoever said there may be an element of overreaction concerning his vocals and performance at the Jubilee. Sorry for rambling.

... He has a fantastic range still, and when he has a good day can sing high notes with a smooth voice, amazing for being 69!... But the change in his voice is evident, especially when he talks, that is natural of course, but I think his smoking habits has damaged his voice more than anything else... ...

I'm totally convinced that pot caused some irreversible damage. But I agree: On a good day, he can still do his thing like his heyday. I, too, just don't accept that merely "aging" is the reason for his current speaking voice. Yes, the vocal cords do weaken over time, but that's, moreso, due to lack of use, which is definitely not the case with our Paul; otherwise, explain why Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Dolly Parton and Paul Simon STILL have such lush fluidity in their vocals.

I would hope my view is as valid as anyone else's ?! I am a fan.....never said I was a bigger or better fan than anyone else, but I do feel that live perfomances in every aspect ie. song selection, vocals & the band themselves are doing his reputation no favours & unless there is a massive change on all fronts, then the Sinatra route beckons. If you still think Paul is cute & sings like he did ion 64 or 76 great........I dont & neither do alot of people. Studio wise he will come up trumps no doubt & I eagerly await the next release.

He blew away South America and Mexico. Shut the hell up!

no need to be so rude about it.just about sums up your opinion. maccamad is a friend of mine who puts his point over way better than me and certainly not an ignorant unfortunate like yourself.

Who's saying what to whom Lazy. Knock it off! I'm neither ignorant nor unfortunate. So don't you and your so called "friends" here start another gang up. You all know where you can go!

Thanks Lazy & all the others who feel the same as I do. Been at work all day, so just seen beatlesfanrandys balanced and gracious reply....must get the address of the charm school they attended. If you think that he is at the top of his game in the live setting these days good for you, but you have set the bar very low in my opinion, almost as low as your manners. Unfortunately I won't shut the hell up just yet, but continue to discuss this thread in a civilised manner ta very much.

I have a right to my opinion about "Anti-fans" here. I get sick and tired of the Paul-bashing that goes on. That goes for you too!

Did anyone hear Tom from Keane on Radio 2 this morning. Was talking about live performances and messing up. Somehow got round to Paul. Think he must have gone to the recent O2 gig. Said he thought Paul started off croaky ('has Macca finally lost it'? he thought) then gradually got better and better as he warmed up. By the end of the night he said he was completely hitting the notes. Which he was. So being discussed here and there.

A question. Does anyone know if Paul has ever seen a vocal coach or doctor?

If the demand is there, you're gonna jump on the bandwagon and play there which is what Paul is doing. But he dosen't have to prove anything anymore so maybe some time out is needed, however when their money involved its contest!

heard that interview as well, and went o2 gig, it shows how many bands/artists admire Paul.

What worries me a bit is that if people think Paul "can't sing anymore," some of those who might have considered buying any new records he puts out will think twice about buying those records. That's why Paul's manager and Stuart Bell should be FAR more protective of his reputation -- and his voice -- and only put him in situations where he can succeed. Yes, yes, Paul has nothing to prove. Yada yada. Yes, he wasn't nearly as bad at the jubilee as some people here said he was, and he wasn't nearly as good as others here said he was. The point is public perception. And the widespread public perception seems to be that he struggled and that is sure to have done some damage to his reputation, and that will affect the future success of his albums.

I don't that is the widespread perception at all. And the other point is that albums are not the way to go anymore. With illegal downloads and record stores going out of business, they are only used to publicise a tour, where the main revenue is made - not the other way around as it used to be. There will always be a loyal fanbase for his albums, but no artists are pinning their hopes on album sales right now - hence the trouble they are going to in re-packaging albums in ever-more elaborate ways.

Paul bashing !?!? You want to spend 5 minutes where I work & you would then realise what Paul bashing is !! Belive me ,here in the UK his standing amongst Joe Public is pretty low & will not be enhanced by turning up to these events looking like Ken Dodd & singing below par. It's ammo for people to call him a has been, which he is not, but he seriously needs to take a rain check & ammend a few issues with his live apperances. But if you think all is well & he's as good as he ever was, good for you, life in "Land Fluffy" must be dinky do, i'll live in the real world ta.

It is so obvious that all are comments in this thread and others re. Paul's performances are out of our love for Paul. I'm glad to see people are realizing that.

dont count yer chickens. there is a whole army accross the pond that will gladly praise his voice no matter what..these types are obviously not exclusive to this forum as i have to take it as FACT that mccartney in real life surrounds himself with too many sycophants. how else can you possibly explain the reappearance of 'maybe im amazed' in his set list....mccartney actually believes he still got the ability to sing it and no one is telling him otherwise. its a scary thought that someone so brilliant as paul can be so far off the mark with his judgment.

OK LAZY...you are stepping onto shaky ground here!! I can't overlook this slur... so you need to apologize firstly!! I really see the difference in our differing views as social norms. Let me ask if I understand this...As Thisbe211 says that in England you love Paul and therefore you feel he is embarrassing himself and because you love him, you want him to not play concerts anymore because you feel it is embarrassing? ops: Is that right?! Over here on our side of the pond, I think we don't worry very much if we embarrass ourselves. It's more like: If you don't want to listen to me, that's your problem, your hang up, your set of rules. If you don't like how I am/sound, don't listen then!! Don't you think that people make judgements based on thinking that everyone thinks the same as they do? But you see, customs are very different all over the world... If you can try to just relax a bit and just let other people make their own decisions for themselves. It may not be what you would choose, but everyone should get to make their own choices in life. When to sing, when to retire, when to do whatever makes them happy!! You can only control yourself, and you only get the choice over yourself. It may not be what is right for someone else, but it is their choice to choose for themselves. Maybe you are afraid to try venturesome things, but many people may be more venturesome than you are! We're all different, but all connected as humans. Just relax and let it be. What a relief to not have to make other peoples choices, really... Ever notice how your kids don't even like the choices you make for them sometimes... and they're just kids. When we're adults, ahhhh the relief that we don't have to listen anymore, to how we don't want to do something!!! Just my own opinion on the subject. Maybe Paul could sing a bit each day to keep his voice limber, I know mine really goes if I don't do that... not that mine is anywhere near Paul's lol... still it's a thought Peace Brother! Cheers! Oh and I just want to point out how many people are still paying good money to hear Paul, so adding that up, it's hundreds of thousands of people who are happy to hear him sing just as he is now!!

What, slur?? And I certainly ain't gonna be apologising for offering a pretty accurate personal opinion.im surprised at this post directed at me .but hey I'm getting thick skin. And by the way people will pay good money to see our paulie even if he ends up sounding like bob Dylan....that's what I'm worried about

PLEASE..don't drag Bob Dylan into this! I believe Paul really liked Bob Dylan, right? I just want to say, my Liverpoolgroom is the same age as our Paul and LPgroom is not doing so well since his last stroke! Our lives do have an expiration date. Sad to say but true..soon Paul and I will have our birthdays, if I could let Paul know how I feel..I would tell him, Paul you've done enough..please don't let others tell you what to do! Many of those well meaning people are not in touch with how US older people have to cope with getting old(weather we dye our hair or work out) our bodies can no longer do many of the things we love to do. I'm home now with my LPgroom to care for him 24/7 as he can't do things for himself like he use to do. PAUL , if you ever read these posts..I ,like many here, want only what is best for you! Take care of yourself..if you should retire..I won't hold it against you..enjoy the time you have. PEACE..give it a chance!!!!
