Yeah if he wants to carry on touring, which he obvously does, he sould consider getting someone in to help train his voice. There's no shame in it!

Or at least change the song choices to ones he can handle.

      Yep, or that!

Last week was great to be a McCartney fan -- with the reissue of Ram and all the fantastic reviews. This week it's not so great. But it's also not the end of the world -- for Paul or his fans. I don't think Paul should stop touring. I just think he should stop doing these high-profile TV appearances when his voice is clearly not up to it. Either that, or he should suck it up and go to that famous throat doctor that Adele went to (as well as Roger Daltry and a boatload of other famous singers) and see if anything can be done for his voice.

but paul dosent think he has a problem.he will probably tell you hes been told hes singing better than ever and hes believing it!!!..thats the problem. if for example paul himself actually woke up to his limitations there are many things he could do to camouflage his dodgy voice.for a start he could sing many songs from his own cannon that would not expose him as much. there is no mystery about a 70 year old pop star not singing as good as they did when they where 20 or 30 yrold...the problem here is that the 70 year old singer still thinks hes singing as good as ever ,which completely blows me away. on a channel four docu about pauls second wife the investagitive journalist famously stated that getting information and getting close to mccartney is notoriously difficult.he said that their where strong rumours that he surrounds himself with people who treat him like he is a GOD...im not saying we have anything like an 'elvis' or 'wacko' situation going here, but i do believe that those close to paul these days [including his band] censor their opinion to keep the great man happy and themselves possibly in a job.......sometimes you can have just too much power and status however rounded you are.

On the flip side and way from his vocals not being as good as they were when he was 35. Perhaps he just wants to be part of the occasion. He seems to like the Queen and maybe he feels extremely proud to be part of the occasion and whether you like the royals or not it is historic. Same could be said about the Olympics.

              Sir Paul McCartney....Thank You!!

At what age have other vocalists retired? Have any kept performing well into their 70s? I could do with some expert input on that - failing that, I will google the question.

Definitely time for a pool side studio where he can wile many an hour away, creating/writing/recording. Definitely **** the Queen! He's absolutely nothing left to prove. Time for a semi retirement methinks interspersed with new music now and again.

Not sure though I would suggest 70 is about right. Didn't Bowie retire about 4/5 yrs ago?

I think we should set up a new poll Will Paul be in a wheelchair before he retires? No - only joking, a bit too nasty, but he loves what he does so much I can't see him ever stopping.

Well i don't think Paul's voice is as dire as you do. I continue to love his voice on KOTB, I love the way he sings Blackbird and Yesterday. I LIKE Paul's weathered voice a lot actually. I just think that a TV performance requires more precision singing and is completely unforgiving compared with singing in a large outdoor arena. Part of the problem, I'm sorry to say, is Stuart Bell and Paul's manager, Scott (something) who should man up and speak bluntly to Paul, helping him to avoid these sorts of train wreck performances on TV. So if Paul wants to continue to do these big attention-getting TV gigs, he needs to face facts about his voice and see a doctor, or voice coach. Or don't do any more TV.

"Train Wreck" is a complete exaggeration. Missing a few notes is not a train wreck - missing most notes is. So long as he's keeping himself happy and making the world happy, I say keep going, at least until the general public are disgusted - like they were by Cheryl Cole's performance.

I don't think Paul's voice is actually that bad for 70. not bad at all. but cmon, its all about the records. I mean I'm glad he's having a good time but it aint sounding like 1973, let me be the first to tell ya yeah, its 'weathered' I think someone said. thats a good call. honestly, I think the vocals on Chaos is a large part why it just doesn't do much for me. but the songs are pretty solid. but again, 70 so.. what in the world can we expect. its just up to Paul and what he's thinking he wants to do. if I were him I would just try for the all out poppiest, grooviest, melodied out.. poppy melodic grooves that he can muster. not even muster just have fun with us and let it flow from ya. and keep the lyrical spice that I'd say he's got now.. cause if he does all that the singing will be fine. or give the poppy melodic grooves away to new acts, producing the tracks, or co-producing. I've always thought tons of Paul songs could be done great by other bands. thats a cool life for an aging rocker, ghostwriting and hooking up the kids! I bet there'd be takers. shit I'd do a McCartney song. all day he'd never allow it actually he allows covers. for a nominal fee! rambling at this point ,

Isn't it possible he just had a bad night? Just a little hoarse, maybe a slight cold, not properly hydrated? I heard him last Summer 2011 in Detroit and he was amazing.

Sure, it's possible he had a bad night. But the sad truth is that lately his bad nights are pretty frequent (last year's Saturday Night Live appearance being another example) and his good nights (vocally, that is) increasingly rare. Bear in mind, too, that in a TV performance you're going to hear him much more clearly than in a stadium with 50,000 people. It's much easier to miss the vocal shortcomings in that sort of live situation. Personally, I doubt I will see Paul live again. I've seen him half a dozen times, and I don't want my last memory of Paul performing to be the equivalent of Muhammed Ali's sad last fights or Sinatra's gravel-voiced, struggling later shows. In the studio, it's a different matter. You can control the conditions, and if it's a bad day you can just come back and try again next week after some rest. But even in those circumstances he often struggles to sound good. While his voice on KOTB mostly works for the material, parts of it for me are painful to listen to. There are moments when he doesn't just sound strained or hoarse -- there is a fair amount of that on Back to the Egg, after all, but it works -- he sounds elderly. There's nothing wrong with growing old -- hell, I'm 56 and I'd sure prefer growing old to the alternative -- but there's also something to be said for going out on top, and for knowing when you just can't do some things anymore. But it's gotta be hard. He clearly loves performing.

I see him quite a bit, and his show in Manchester late December last year was the best I've seen him. He sounded sensational. I'm sure others who were there would agree. I think he's just at an age where some nights he's good, other nights not so good. No reason to panic... As somebody else posted here recently: he's 70 - it's allowed.

I just watched the concert, expecting it to be a train wreck after reading these comments. To my utter shock, he sounded just fine. Sure, a few bum notes here and there, but nothing like what this thread suggested. Honestly, I think Paul's fans are harder on him than anyone else. I also just googled for stories about the show to see what the media was saying about it. I read not one negative word about his voice. In fact, the general theme seemed to be that Paul stole the show along with Elton and Stevie. And for those concerned about his legacy: you do realize this is Paul McCartney, right? He firmly established himself as a legend 45 years ago. The man could literally croak through an entire set in front of a worldwide television audience tomorrow and it wouldn't affect his legacy one whit.
