Significance of Title and Artwork for "New"?
-
I was thinking about this today and I came up with the line of reasoning that the title is a reference to his new relationship/marriage with Nancy. The letters, each made up of three lines, resemble the Roman numeral III for 3. And since this is his third marriage, I wonder if that was chosen for the artwork. BTW, anyone find any "Paul is dead" clues on the album?
-
I certainly hope the "3" isn't intentional for that reason. I'd say highly unlikely.
-
I can't see what else it could mean....what's so bad about that? The third major relationship in his life. It resembles the letters "NEW" to a certain extent, but it's a bit of a stretch. Has he ever addressed it in an interview yet?
-
It's just NEW for his new relationship. Nothing to do with Roman numeral III for his 3rd wife! He would never do that!

You've got to be kidding! What are you, 14? That's how old I was when all that crap first came out and I knew it was ridiculous then.

I don't know just like that XXX for kisses on his other album. He knew what he was doing there...

If you play the album backwards, you get a message from PETA

Nancy R, It seems that you fancy yourself the local Macca "know-it-all" as you state your opinions as facts (I didn't like your post re the lyrics of Hosanna..."It's obviously a song about..."). Between that and your condescending comments like "What are you 14?" in response to something I obviously posted as a JOKE--I find your incessant posts adding little to no value to most threads here. Based on your post it would seem that you are in your 60s now and one would expect a bit more from a "senior citizen." "You must have learned something in all those years..."

An observation I have made is that one side of the album is a sunrise theme, and the other is a sunset. Google the meaning of Nuit in Thelema, or the Egyptian Goddess Nut, and you will read about the story about The Sun. How the sun is reborn everyday, etc... The 111 as I stated before is the anniversary of Paul and Nancy's wedding day. 10/09/2011 = 111 Also 111 is also HEAVEN. 111 can also mean other things, but it would bring controversy to this discussion and I am not going there.
*The lines in the artwork could represent the LADDER in the Egyptian mythology I am speaking of.* From the Egyptian Book of the Dead: "Hail, thou Sycamore Tree of the Goddess Nut! Give me of the water and of the air which is in thee. I embrace that throne which is in Unu, and I keep guard over the Egg of Nekek-ur. It flourisheth, and I flourish; it liveth, and I live; it snuffeth the air, and I snuff the air, I the Osiris Ani, whose word is truth, in peace.''

He was nearly there with the 3 lines , what a waste he didn't think of McCartney III

I was about to reply, maybe this was a veiled reference since it's often 'the talk' on this site...LOL And with that said, would it have made a difference if he did call it 'McCIII' instread of 'New' (besides to the few hard core here)?

Hi Kittay! Interesting observations for sure! I have the Deluxe version of the album with the three panes. I notice that the two ends have the same three sets of three lines, but the first is blue-pink-blue and the latter is pink-blue-pink. The middle pane has no colored line segments on it, but it has the songs arranged in three columns. The sunrise/sunset analogies are interesting. I don't see 10/09/2011 as being represented by 111--care to explain? There's definitely something to the design of the artwork (even if pundits like Nancy R discount the idea). 3 x 3 = 9 and 9 figured prominently in the works and life of John (see Cynthia Lennon's book entitled John). Paul mentions John in the liner notes in connection with the song "Early Days." So there is the possibility that it's a veiled reference to Lennon, although this is probably a stretch. Paul would like the idea though, just like the discovery of "Memory Almost Full" being and anagram of "For My Soulmate LLM." Like I said before, it's not apparent to the casual observer that the three sets of line segments are supposed to represent the word "NEW." Show the album to a non-Beatles fan and ask them what it says! I still think that the Roman numeral III is represented meaning that this is the third significant relationship of his life. The song seems to be about his new wife, Nancy, but one could almost interpret some of the lyrics as being about Linda as parts of it are written in the past tense "Then we were new..." All-in-all an interesting mystery!
-
Oh really, the third significant relationship...what about Jane Asher? That said I think the theory is utter b******t. No way he'd insult Linda like that...don't think your "No.2" is someone he wants on the cover of his album. And yes I think Nancy is very knowledgable about Paul.

Okay well Nancy and Sir Paul's wedding date is 10/09/2011. If you add the 10 +9 = 19 = 1+9 = 10 which is 1+0 = 1 so that is a 1. Then there is 2011, but you ignore the 20. equals = 1/11 or 111. see? I am not surmising anything about numbers of serious relationships or marriages, but that could be possible only he knows. He did get married on John's birthday, but that did not occur to me on the numbers. Yes, and NEW = Nu or Nuit, or Nut. Whichever mythology/spirituality you want to reference. oh, and look up Nu or Nv, which is the 13th letter of the Greek alphabet. yes, it is such a mystery.

Oh how refreshing, another Beatles historian rears his head with yet another obnoxious crack! Jane Asher: first off Paul and her were never married, Paul claimed (even to John that they had an open and "sensible" relationship. He was not monogamous in even the most liberal sense of the word when he was with Jane Asher. Despite the fact that many dislike his second wife, the marriage did exist. Ok, the III signifying his third marriage was just an off the cuff guess meant to start a friendly debate. OK Frank, since my "theory" is b******t, what's your best guess?!?! Oh and by the way, let me know when your Macca book is coming out
Sorry, but I don't feel that obnoxious replies like yours and Nancy R's should be allowed on this site as it really detracts from the intended friendly atmosphere here. I just joined and already I have been attacked by two Macca "know-it-alls."

I know it seems that way King Macca. In reality I am really into mathematics and playing with numbers and words in my spare time in between other thoughts and things I do everyday. Plus I love symbolism, mythology, and spiritualism. But the real way I came to see what I see in the NEW album, be it real or not, was quite easy and involved no study. It just came to me. Like when things in life are hidden in plain sight, but really they are there if you are meant to see it. I am sure there is a lot I do not see as well.
No spare time here.

Eric, PID is a sensitive subject for some of us. PIDers tend to be crazy and mean. I doubt the mods wouldn't let me go into more detail than that but as a result, it makes my hackles raise and me coming out swinging. One group tried to put me in jail to shut me up from countering their supposed clues. That's how demented they are.

Not to attack you, but the subject of relationships and the types some Beatles had in the 60s can get complicated. Just because Jane and Paul were never married does not diminish their relationship at all. Marriage is just a financial arrangement.
