"I Can Bet" Another Stunner From "New"
-
"I Can Bet" is yet another fantastically catchy, sexy, scintillating song on "New" isn't it
Haven't seen a thread just for this one
Might be wrong on that (?).

It was one of the first songs that really caught my attention the first listen-through. I'd place it in my Top 5 on the album. It would make a good live jam, too.
-
I don't quite get the enthusiasm for this one. It's a fun, catchy and well-delivered slice of lightweight pop entertainment. Now there's nothing at all wrong with that, but it's ultimately pretty lightweight, without any of the emotional resonance or depth of Paul's best stuff. I do like it, but I'm glad the whole album isn't filled with songs like this.
-
Bruce, what is wrong with you? I Can Bet is one of the best songs on the album! Makes me want to dance & sing it! (kind of like The Beatles' You Can't Do That) Does every song have to have 'deep emotional resonance' for you? I know, you'll say 'No' but I Can Bet is such a damn good song!

You got that right, N.R.
"I Can Bet" isn't profound, but it sure is fun

Exactly! Not every Paul song needs to be profound! It's a fun, catchy rocker! It's probably my favorite song on the album!

Bouncy. Hooked me straight away. One of the top tier songs from New.
-
Had it doing a loop in my head yesterday - says it all
-
I Can Bet is a great tongue in cheek catchy little rocker about sex basically, another to add to Paul's "sex" songs like Girl's School, The Back Seat Of My Car and Eat At Home etc.

Love the moog solo!

It's one of my favorites on the album from the first time I heard it. The great lost Wings track that never was, in my view
-
On first listen I thought this would make a great single release. On twitter Brian has mentioned that it was run through a couple of times during rehearsals. To me it's just a pure McCartney rocker.
-
The first few times I heard it I thought the lyrics were "I can bend." LOL!!!! I'm thinkin' what????? Great song.

<-------Loves it!

You're so right Susy. So many great feel good POP-ROCK songs on NEW. I am so hopeful that Paul and the Band do this live in the US next year. Can you see Abe hitting the drums on I Can Bet! I missed seeing Paul in the US this year. I snow-bird from New Jersey to Florida and we had already left Florida when Paul started the tour in Orlando last May. Then he skipped Philadelphia later in the Summer. If he does 6-8 songs from NEW in the US in 2014, I will make sure I am there even if I have to travel several states. I would love to hear I Can Bet live along with others like Alligator and On My Way to Work. There is hope as I saw that Paul did the 2 latter songs on one of the Japan sound checks.

Of course not, but the ones I consider really great do. It's musical cotton candy, while the songs I love are the ones that make me feel something. Much as I like, say, "Jet," I'd never put it in the same class with "Maybe I'm Amazed" or "Wanderlust." Similarly, "I Can Bet" makes me tap my toes but ultimately doesn't make me feel anything or really linger with me. Simple as that. For the life of me I can't see what's so special about it. I might ask what's wrong with you that you think a fun but basically ordinary song is something so extraordinary.
-
I said it was "one of the best songs on the album" my dear! Not "extraordinary."At least we agree about Maybe I'm Amazed (my favorite Paul solo song) and Wanderlust. Anywho, some of us just dig the hell out of I Can Bet but we also "Appreciate" (pun intended) the deeper and more emotional songs like Scared etc.
P.S. Sometimes I just like musical cotton candy! ("turn off your mind and relax and float downstream")

Some of Paul's best stuff is what the critics describe as the equivalent of 'cotton candy' (edit - Bruce's terminology).... a good term, by the way... Silly Love Songs and Goodnight Tonight.... which the critics lament are so 'poppy' are in my favourite McCartney (post-Beatles) songs.... probably in my top ten of his.... I love them... And I Can Bet, whilst not breathing the same atmosphere, but is somewhere sniffing at the horizon, is a great feel-good song. ps. Maybe I'm Amazed is the quintessential song. The original McCartney album version. Just magnificent. Why it wasn't released as a single (until the live Wings Over America version) is one of the greatest wonders of the universe. Monumental.
