Live 8 downloads already breaking records Sgt Pepper's download available in 30 countries Ken Young, vnunet.com 04 Jul 2005 You watched the show, now it's time to download that opening song. Paul McCartney and U2's historic performance of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is already gearing up to break all music download records. The recording was available from midnight just after the Live 8 show had ended - a record for speedy conversion to download in itself - and became available through more than 200 online stores in 30 different countries. Shortly after the performance the song was transmitted by satellite to BBC Television Centre and relayed to Capital Radio. A digital recording was then captured by Universal Music which edited, mastered and transmitted the track to its production centre in Hanover, Germany. The final master was sent to the company's global electronic distribution warehouse in the US and then distributed to online retailers worldwide. But the processing was not all hi-tech. Ben Drury, managing director at 7 Digital, which worked with Universal Music to process the seminal track, said: "I was in the Universal offices and received the audio from a runner. "This guy literally ran from the gig to St James's Square with a CD. We uploaded it to the server and our programmers did their magic. We have sold more than 6,000 copies already." Live 8 organisers said that the event is being monitored by Guinness World Records to establish that the download breaks previous records. It is expected to become the fastest number one ever
