Make Poverty History, Bono...

I read yesterday in a book that Bono calls sometimes Paul... 20th Century Mozart
mmm... hello Bono in case you're reading
. When you enter this site you see the Makepovertyhistory.org link above on the right... Bono did a question in Yahoo Answers and he had 20000 answers or so... He said, what do we have to do to make poverty history? Now the time of answering is closed. My answer was that everyone of the rich countries would donate 0.7 % of the amount of their bank accounts every year. Not the governments! (I think that none do this) but the people. Ok, now I think I'm pretty wrong. (I had a graduation with honors in History of Economics (a very rare qualification)). That's my new point of view. If we donate there to poor countries we only make the trouble double... I mean we copy our model of development there. That is absurd. If they poor countries develop in similar ways than the rich ones, the economic system would colapse (crazy oil prices, for instance), the environment would collapse (you know)... It has absolutely no sense, to end poverty making them "like us" or so. It's our "richness" that has to change before. Our model. "Before changing the world take a look at your room" or so...
Instead of donating there focusing of changing the things here. Sustainable development, personal growth, etc...

Throwing money at problems rarely solves them. If you teach a man to fish he will spend his weekends away from his family, but if you teach him how to allocate a federally subsidised agricultural development programme throughout his village, he will teach many others how to fish.

The purpose of campaigns such as ONE are more to shed some light on the things happening away from our own countries. You may not think things such as AIDS and poverty are too important, since the ONE campaign helps only Africa. But it is an important campaign, and just because OUR countries aren't involved, doesn't mean we shouldn't help people in other parts of the world. Sure, we have problems in our own countries. But no where near the problems (health related mainly) that Africa does. So, by shedding light on the issue, the ONE campaign is helping us all help our brothers in need!

I'm part of ONE and RED as well as a few others and it only makes you realize how valuable and how much easier our lives are. These organizations help individuals recognize the hardships and disease that others are experiencing. 'Throwing money' at these issues exploits them and draws more attention to them so we can come together and try to help (big voice) our fellow man as forgotmygloss said. And it also helps prevent it from happening to other countries, so they are actually helpful in some ways. A small gesture goes a long way
