Tattoo signatures - yay or nay?

The problem I have with it is that you generally have to be a young blonde woman and you have to be down front. That often means you have paid big bucks to be down front. Nobody else has a shot at it. Audrey stood in line forever to get down front in Quebec to get hers. I can't get close enough to even get an album signed. If Paul is going to continue this, I wish he would call a 1st generation fan up there and a man.
Hello Linda!!! hey, I know what you mean. I was so far away so it would have been absolutly useless to have a sign. But I was THERE and I saw HIM and I was so HAPPY!!

I don't like tatoos, personally...nor would I be comfortable to get up on stage in front of thousands of people and meet Paul face to face. I'll just be in the stands, near the front admiring him from afar and rooting for whoever (or is it whomever?) he chooses to sign, hug, dance with, whatever. I admire those who had the courage to get on stage to meet Paul and even more courage to get a tatoo (owwwiiieee), and truly happy that he has made some people's dream come true. This last part is JMO: I don't think people should be so demanding of his bestowing these special "gifts" to fans, nor think it's their Gawd given right to get up on stage just because they have been a longtime fan for x amount of years....paid x amount of $ for your seat....been to x amount of concerts. I'm sure by now Paul is getting bored of all the "I wanna tatoo" signs. Too much competition spoils the "specialness" of it all.

Well I am still miffed at him for denying me nearly five times so far but I think it's a good idea. If he keeps going at this rate though, nearly everybody on this planet will have Paul McCartney signature tattoos.

I thought it was very cool when Audrey was the original one, but now I'm over the whole tattoo thing. Kudos to all that got them, but Paul...give it a rest, now....

Blonde? Yes, I'm blonde...but Audrey isn't. Neither is Walliebaby. I haven't gone back to look at the video again, but I'm pretty sure the girl's arm he signed in Puerto Rico was a brunette. Kind of a generalization to say young AND blonde.. Also, while I think it would be FANTASTIC if he called a "1st generation" fan up on stage, I'm not sure I understand the need to segregate fans (1st generation, young, men, women, etc.) in the first place. This man is legendary, and we're ALL fans of his. The only reason I wasn't a fan in 1964 is because I wasn't even thought of - my parents were 7 years old! I don't feel someone older than me is automatically more of a fan of his (and, yes, I know you didn't say that - and this isn't directed at just you). I've just read a lot of things about me (especially comments on pictures I didn't even post of me on stage - on Facebook) that basically say that I was called on stage because I'm young and blonde. My thinking is: Perhaps Paul is calling younger people on stage because he likes feeling that he's still relevant - even with those who weren't around to witness Beatlemania. Maybe in a way he expects those who've been lucky enough to witness his entire career in real time to be his fans, but it's something special to see those who were born in the 80s, 90s, etc. admire him so much. Just a thought. Off my soapbox now.
Very well said. We're all McCartney fans - old, young, female, male. I think being his fans all brings us together, and regardless of who gets called up, we should all be so happy that he's even gracious enough to let it happen.
That said, I would LOVE it if he brought an older fan on stage. A first generation fan would be fantastic and heartwarming because they've been through the years with McCartney, supported him, and waited for that moment for such a long time. Just the emotion would be priceless. Still though, I'd have to agree with Furlow, being a younger fan, we haven't had as many chances to experience his music as long as the older fans have. So there are positives and negatives to each position. I love seeing people get signed on stage but I'd have to say I can't wait to see what people come up with next. I don't think the tattoo thing is getting as unique as it was before and Paul might be getting tired of it. I might not be a good person to get an opinion from though - I'm one of those people that would never, ever, ever have the courage to even ask that, let alone go up on stage in front of that many people. So kudos to anyone who can and has done it! -

Jen, you and Sarah... I didn't want to offend you two in particular as I know you both recently got signed. OK, I will be honest, I don't really like how it has become so routine now.
I don't know that because it happens once a show, it's somehow less fun for the audience. It's important to remember that just because we read every fan report, troll every youtube video, many, many people do not. So it just may seem routine to you simply because you've exposed yourself to it over and over again. It may be a perspective thing. Personally, I've seen him three times on this tour, not once has he done an autograph from the audience, although he has mentioned the signs. And familarity doesn't always breed contempt. For example, Paul has his set patter for the show too and that doesn't make it any less fun for me just because I know what he's going to say next <g>. I'm thinking it's the same with the signs. It's a crowd-pleaser and folks seem to enjoy it. Along with being a brilliant musician, Paul is, after all, an entertainer. And it's not like there are thousands of people out there who have had arms signed by Paul. There's been what? 25 stops on this tour? And he hasn't done the autograph thing at all of them. So out of the hundreds of thousands of people that's a pretty small elite group, so I can't really see how the joy might get lessened for them. Obviously can't sign for everyone who wants one. So someone gets lucky and others not so much. That's life. I suppose it's best to go into these kinds of things with no expectations, that way you're presently surprised rather than disappointed.

What makes you think I am totally against autographs? I am only referring to the ones that are turned into tattoos during concerts. Why isn't he so quick to bring folks onstage to sign an LP cover or something? .
At least they can't put it on Ebay.

Well..we all knew I'd chime in here eventually, right? First of all - don't worry about offending...this is an open forum and we all have a right to our own opinions. Plus - when it comes to meeting Paul - no one will be able to offend me.
Now, I have mixed feelings about this in a way. For one, I OBVIOUSLY feel it's fantastic because it allowed me to meet my idol. It was literally one of the two happiest moments in my life and I wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING else. A few times I've thought maybe it is beginning to happen too often and it can make it seem a little less special. But then I really start thinking about it and the word "often" seems silly in this context. Thousands and thousands of people are at each show. I was called up in front of approximately 18,000 people in Nashville alone. At least half of which would have given anything to be in my shoes. So...once I let that sink in, I begin to realize how special it really is. As far as if it's fair that he chooses some, and others are left disappointed. Well...it is fair. It sucks (especially for fellow boardies who feel the same about him as I do), but it's Paul's choice in the in. It's not like he can stop the show and say, "OK - everyone who wants an autograph, come on up!" But - I certainly give a big "yay" as my vote. I hope he continues this phenomenon, in hopes that people like Harleyblues and BarbB have their moments. They deserve them as much as anybody!ahhh Sarah~
yeah, I mean why question it. ?? It's very cool and I can't express how cool enuff it is.. how often do u get the oppurtunity to meet Paul McCartney? You meet Paul , you're shaking in your shoes, you get that awesome autograpbh & the crowd goes wild!!!!

Paul signed the back of a woman in Philly last night...she was a brunette and appeared to be maybe in her mid 30"s??

It is rather disappointing when you also have a "sign my __" sign and Paul chooses someone else or doesn't do it. I tried in Nashville and Paul saw it but chose Sarah (I AM TOTALLY HAPPY FOR YOU). I thought for sure he would in Charlotte but he didn't do anything but wave, and then you hear how he's signed a person at every show with the same sign since then. Heartbreaking, really.
this is what I do not like about the whole thing. it raises peoples' expectations and they probably spend the entire show thinking/worrying/hoping he will sign their sign and choose them. it becomes a distraction that I assume takes away from the show a bit. I know people want contact with Paul but they shouldn't go to a show pinning everything on whether he is going to sign their arm or their album. it makes me sad.
It also puts pressure on Paul to do it every time, like he almost feels obligated to do it as a "routine" part of the show. -

I went into it expecting absolutely NOTHING. My best case scenario was "maybe he'll read my sign", which is no different than the people who have brought signs into the venues for years. In fact, on our way down to Nashville my sister and I allowed ourselves 30 seconds to imagine "what if", and then went back to the real world. Even after Paul read my sign aloud and agreed to sign me (after Got To Get You Into My Life), I made a concentrated effort to enjoy the rest of the show and not worry/think about if he was going to follow through. I didn't want to leave the show having missed everything because I was too worried about meeting/not meeting Paul. As you're saying - that would've been a real shame. Like someone has said before - you have to go into something like that expecting nothing. Therefore, if it doesn't happen you don't leave disappointed, but if it does - it's a huge and amazing surprise!

And I'm afraid that signing someone has become "routine" for him. It's all part of the experience of a PM show now.

Same here. What was totally cool was bringing the young girl in the front row due to his kindness who is in a wheelchair. Now that is what Paul's kindness is all about. Paul has yet to bring a gray haired, frumpy older fan on stage for an autograph. If he doesn't do it tonight (something really special is happening), I shall be very disappointed in him. I've got four Paul autographs on my body and gladly add his autograph to the collection. However, I have no way of getting to the front row, so I just enjoy the music. I enjoyed watching the autograph in Nashville, but now it's just becoming way too routine. You say the woman last night was probably 30. That sure a hell of a lot young than 59.

Marta doesn't look like a brunette in the You Tube video. Looks blonde to me. The young girl in the wheel chair is probably the most touching thing I have ever heard of Paul doing on stage. Good on you, Paul, for that one.

I thought I'd jump back in to this post as one of the newly-tarried. I've counted about eight or nine people who have been signed by Paul since Audrey began the movement. While I feel bad for those folks who have waited since the 60's to meet Paul, I am not so sorry that I'm going to let it ruin my happiness. No, I'm not blonde, nor am I good looking, nor am I particularly young. I'm a frumpy school teacher from Vermont who chose to spend too much money on the soundcheck package, hoping to meet Paul in a smaller, more personal format, and it worked. I didn't get on stage, I got to the side of the stage. I chose to use my moment to secure a permanent reminder of the meeting. That was my choice. Whether you agree with the tattoo phenomenon or not, I hope as fans we can all agree that if a boardie gets to meet Paul, we should all be supportive. And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. lol

Hey stop that, you are NOT old~ you are NOT frumpy!!~ and I agree with your posty- try not to ruin it for others, it was your choice to get auto-graph on your arm- it's a lovely reminder of something wonderful that has happened to you for the rest of your life~! It's freakin Paul McCartney for goodness sake~

I forget who made the suggestion on the board, but someone had an awesome idea to create a fake eBay item of a Paul tattoo...I'm thinking it would be hysterical to do it, and proof that not only young, attractive blondes are catching Paul's eye...lol roll
