Feeling sad and anxious, just a vent
-
my dentist is doing nothing to help me and i'm so anxious and scared. my damn jaw problem won't go away. i've been having clicking/popping for a few years (2/3 yrs...im 16 now) and there is no pain. i have been to dentist and she says that it is a common problem and often goes away on its on, is this true? it seems hard to believe after so long...she is a new dentist and i am seeing her on monday so hopefully something more can be done. it causees me great stress and anxiety. sometimes, the noises change. is this normal? usually it is a softer clicking that i can deal with but occasionally there is a really loud cracking noise which may happen a few times and in between that it is a crinkly or grating noise. it makes me really upset when i hear the really loud noises. i really want the clicking to stop, there is ALWAYS a click. but she always says the same thing 'avoid opening the mouth wide' well i have been doing this since i first started the clicking and nothing is changing! it really scares me (the noises) and i feel so down when it. she is a really nice dentist but this jaw thing is what gets me most and she doesn't do anything to help it. i'm scared that my joints are damaged and i keep reading that it will only get worse over time but i get so stressed over that because nobody's helping. Even my mum isn't too bothered (it took me ages to get her to let me see a dentist) She had it when she was my age but she said she only had it for a year, mines has lasted longer and i'm so scared i'll be stuck with this forever with no help.

Are you able to get a second opinion?

When I was in my mid-20's my jaw used to lock on me if I yawned too widely! It finally just went away (or I became used to not opening my mouth so wide!) I had also had jaw pain & pain eating on the left side for over a year! Went to my dentist, ENT (ears, nose, throat) doc, and also an oral surgeon. The ENT guy said wear a mouth guard at night (he thought I might be grinding my teeth--I wasn't and I couldn't sleep with the damn thing in my mouth!) The oral surgeon thought it was a muscle problem and to massage it. Long story short, the problem just went away. All this leads up to is to tell you that you have a TMJ (temoral mandibular joint) problem. You should see and oral surgeon for a second opinion. There is surgery that can be done if necessary. (I'm an RN who works in the O.R. [operating theatre to you] for over 33 1/2 years)

The other night I woke up and my jaw was clicking and hurt when I opened it...and I heard like a crackling in my ear. I thought I was getting lockjaw
Thank goodness that went away!! You must be beside yourself!! Prayers that it soon stops!
