What kind of headphones should I get?

Hey all. I need new headphones so I can listen to NEW and hear all the NUANCES, if you know what I mean. What kind should I get?

Sony ($20 at Target) I got some for my 87 year old Dad to listen to the TV and he loves them! He doesn't have to turn the sound up real loud to hear now.

For real? Dang! I'm shocked. Love Sony. What brand do you own?

I imported NEW to iTunes and listened with my ear buds on my macbook pro. Sounds pretty good, but the buds keep popping out which is why I don't use 'em that often.

Just make sure they're efficient rather than fashionable I find it cringeworthy the number of top athletes appearing prior to their events wearing Dr Dre headphones. Apparently at the 2012 Olympics their reps were handing these out free in the Olympic Village on condition they "walked on" their event wearing them - the swimmers were an embarrassment particularly. I see the women tennis players have been got at as well.. Can't recommend anything in particular - look at specialist audio mags and related web-sites for technical and impartial reviews. Martin

Thanks Martin! Yeah, I've always gone for sound, myself, not particularly looks. When I was in college, undergrad, in the 70s, I took my stereo turn table in to get the diamond needle head replaced. Both sales staff were young men about my age. One offered me something silly for the turntable. I looked at him funny and said it wasn't for sale. The other said, "Yeah, she'll take your CAR for it." Back to headphones, MacWorld has a two page write up on theirs this issue. Just wondered if anyone has any brand in particular they like before spending a lot of money on them. Sound is most important. Comfort, too.

Looking around it does look like headphones have become the latest "Mine is bigger than yours" bragging battleground with designer brands commanding stupid prices. Back to that earlier Sony recommendation CNET make them their "Editors Choice": http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/headphones/sony-mdr-zx600-review-50007773/ Martin

Wow! Those look really good. Thanks so much, Martin! Amazon has them for $60. Great deal.

Anyway, why did you want to listen to the nuisances? Martin

Go to Best Buy and get the earbuds that are about $20 that have the soft removable/replaceable ends. They are shaped like mini Tootsie rolls and fit perfectly in your ears. (the ones with the round ends suck & never stay in my ears either!)

That's like half the price of the same UK ones!

I have that problem too. But you are correct Nancy...those with the rounded ends don't fit well.
