Your favorite movies of all time
-
Of all the movies you've ever seen, what are your top 12 (or pick another number if 12 doesn't work for you)? Here's mine. Depending on mood, there are one or two I might swap out for another, but most of these are rock solid. Presented in roughly chronological order because I really can't pick favorites among these: 1. Duck Soup 2. The Wizard of Oz 3. Casablanca 4. Singin' In the Rain 5. Lawrence of Arabia 6. Dr. Strangelove 7. 2001: A Space Odyssey 8. Z 9. MASH 10. The Godfather 11. Annie Hall 12. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version)* 13. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? 14. Beauty and the Beast (animated version) 15. Beautiful Thing *The 1950s original is great, too, but the studio made them tack on a happy ending that totally sucks the life out of it.

"Inconceivable!"
Reminds me of an interview with Wallace Shawn a few months back for the 30th anniversary where he said that at least once a day somebody says that to him, thinking they are the first person to ever say that to him.

You have some good ones on there. I love A Knight's Tale too!

Nancy, the music in a Knight's Tale is pretty great the way they weave it into a Medieval setting like it's all good, which it is! Bruce, I will have to check out Chimes At Midnight. Hadn't heard of it. Kestrel, I like Atonement, also, and The Truman Show is brilliant, in my opinion.

For those unfamiliar, Chimes at Midnight is something of a mashup of several Shakespeare history plays. If you can't stomach Shakespeare, it won't be for you. It does help to know the original plays, but you can enjoy the film without them -- though you'll miss some stuff, for sure.
-
Bruce, this sounds great. I love Shakespeare. Will have to put it on my "to see" list.
-
Orson Welles took the Falstaff character from Richard II, Henry IV part 1, Henry IV part 2, Henry V and The Merry Wives of Windsor and made his own movie. Maybe it does help if you're familiar with the plays, but even if you're not, it's a great story that is beautifully directed, acted and written.
We're always told that Citizen Kane is his best work, and just like Gone With the Wind and Casablanca, it's one of the greatest films ever made, but Chimes At Midnight is just as amazing.
