TCM and Classic Film Discussion in General

Today at 5:15 PM EST... Rebecca A Hitchcock masterpiece! Rebecca received eleven Oscar nominations, winning for Best Picture and Best Cinematography (Black and White), which is one of the greatest attributes of this film. Suspenseful plot with several good character studies. For those who have never read the book, there are several jaw-dropping moments. Joan Fontaine delivers a brilliant performance, one that I consider to be her finest, earning an Oscar nomination for her role. Laurence Olivier and Judith Anderson equally deliver, also earning Oscar nominations for their roles. George Sanders is at his best, seducing us with his beautifully distinctive voice. Florence Bates also offers a praiseworthy contribution. A well-deserved Oscar nomination for Hitchcock who outdoes himself, surpassing all expectations with this outstanding film. I highly recommend Rebecca, my favorite black and white film - a must see and without question, a classic film Essential.

I was just checking in to make sure you knew it was on.

Awww, how thoughtful! Thank you, Dave! Being an admirer of Fontaine, I know you enjoyed the film. Did you see the piece on the video store in North Hollywood, Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee? 72,000 films dating as far back as 1892! How cool is that?!

No, but it sounds familiar. I think I saw it before.

Today at 2:00 PM EST... Cary Grant is delightful in His Girl Friday Tonight, Hitchcock in the 30's... The 39 Steps (8:00 PM EST) The Lady Vanishes (9:30 PM EST) Sabotage (11:15 PM EST)
-
This morning at 9:45 AM EST... The Seven Year Itch Marilyn Monroe is charmingly brilliant as her comedic talents sparkle in this ingenious comedy. The famous scene with Marilyn's beautiful white dress whisked up by the breeze from a passing train in the New York Subway beneath the grating is a must see!

Last Wednesday in January to spend with Star of the Month, Loretta Young. Saved the best for last... The Farmer's Daughter (8:00 PM EST) Young earned an Oscar for her delightful performance in this charming film. The Stranger (9:45 PM EST) Along with Young, Orson Welles and Edward G. Robinson offer fine performances.

Always make it a point to watch Farmer's Daughter when it's on. One of my favorite films from that period. Funny and still pertinent. Last night was probably the 5-6 time I've seen it. Enjoyed every minute

^ Wonderful! So happy you had an opportunity to see one of your favorites!

At 7PMET/6PMCT today is a new documentary about Warner Brothers studio. The thing I don't like about Oscar month is that I've already seen most of the movies.

I'm not sure how this blogathon is supposed to work, but this is a good guide to lots of classic film sites: http://aurorasginjoint.com/2013/01/25/31-days-of-oscar-blogathon-update/ And the site where I found it, along with TCM highlights: http://laurasmiscmusings.blogspot.com/2013/01/tcm-in-february-31-days-of-oscar.html

Dave, thank you for posting the article and links, very much appreciated! I was away in New York and missed yesterday's airing of the Warner Bros. documentary along with this morning's airing as well. I am hoping the documentary will be aired again in the near future.

This is the downside for classic film lovers such as ourselves, but I feel a bit differently about multiple viewings. Every time I see a film, I pick up something that I had not noted the first (or tenth :lol time around. Whether it be editing, cinematography, costuming, props, dialogue, whatever, just picking up that certain something during my latest view makes me happy that I took the time to do so.

If I haven't seen a favorite in a while I will sometimes view it again. I enjoyed watching "I'm a Fugitive From a Chain Gang" again Friday. I understand what you're saying about studying certain elements of a favorite film. Having a DVR really helps when re-viewing one. The Warners special wasn't quite what I expected but it had some interesting segments. It focused more on the studio itself than the history of the films. They have an amazing costume collection and it was heartening to see that it is still a functioning studio.

^ To my delight, I have heard about Warner Brothers costume department. I have seen a few pictures and a bit of film, and been told that it is one of the largest collections in the world. I would LOVE to see it! Today at 3 PM EST... Splendor in the Grass Wonderful chemistry between Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty Poignantly moving film with Natalie Wood earning an Oscar nomination for her fine performance.
"Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind." ~ William Wordsworth Tonight at 8:00 PM EST... Bonnie and Clyde Have not seen this film in quite a while, looking forward to it! -
Bonnie and Clyde followed by Cool Hand Luke. Both from 1967. Hard to believe it was the "summer of love. "

Several Oscar-nominated shorts are being shown this week. Where else could you see that? One I intend to check out is about 3-D film-making, in 1936! http://www.tcm.com/schedule/weekly.html

^ I have seen Audioscopiks, it's neat! Given the time period, you will easy see why this short was Oscar-nominated. I recall demonstrations with a baseball, a seltzer bottle, and a trip along Riverside Drive in New York and crossing the GW Bridge. I hope you enjoy it! Absolutely LOVE that TCM regularly airs shorts, especially James A. Fitzpatrick's Traveltalks. A while back, I had been told that a selection of Traveltalks had been released on VHS, but have never seen them. Would LOVE to see Traveltalks released on DVD or Blu-ray, particularly Mighty Niagara. Shorts............
