The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars

Did anyone check out Venus and the moon this evening? About thirty minutes after sunset, I walked outside to have a look at the alluring indigo night sky. There they were, a heavenly sight to behold, Venus shimmering like a brilliant diamond just below a luminous waxing crescent moon - stunningly beautiful!!! Sooooo inspiring!!!

There have been a few days of rain ...... so not too much to say about the night sky without getting my eyes wet .... actually all of me wet. I get up early early so that I can get to my work place early .... the mornings have been colder and crisper ..... and when it is clear .....it is beautiful to where I will take a time out of my have to get to work bummer thoughts and smile inside for the beauty that I see in the sky

The night sky has been lovely here in SoCal and last Wednesday I was happy to witness the meteor that caused a stir here in the southland. Very unsual visual effect.

Hopefully Ion will be as brilliant as some say...should be spectacular...but you'll have to be an early bird to view it...

Ison - yes
. I'll get up early this weekend to see if I can catch either one (I think Ison is just becoming visible to the naked eye, although I'll have binoculars in hand) -

There aren't too many places in Northeastern NJ to enjoy the night skies in all their spender ... got to get away & enjoy the scenery -

Driving home last night - 04.00 am in the morning after work - there was just the slightest cloud cover resulting in the moon having a milky halo leaving the result about three moon diameters wide. I can only imagine the power of such a sight on primitive man and why celestial events become a subject of wonder and mythology. It impressed me - even at 04.00 am. Couldn't stop to try a photograph with three weary colleagues snoozing in the car alongside me
Just won a Fujifilm FinePix 602Z on eBay for £28.00. 
Slightly dated technology, first released 2002, but still far superior to anything I've owned. Particularly the 6X optical zoom capability drew me to it, and capturing sights like this will be exactly the purpose I intend to put it. Martin -

There aren't too many places in Northeastern NJ to enjoy the night skies in all their spender ... got to get away & enjoy the scenery Hey Andy - good to hear from you....but yeah, I'll have to travel a bit (although not too far) to find some good sky watching areas. Sounds like they're expecting Ison to peak visually very soon after Thanksgiving (I believe I read perihelion occurs right on Thanksgiving and it will take a day or two for it to reappear from behind the sun)...this is all provided it doesn't break apart from it's close encounter with the sun.

That's a great shot - seems like it's been a big year for larger meteors...Most of you probably recall the one in Russia earlier this year. But then we had one here on the east coast that apparently didn't strike the earth, but was reported by many thousands from New England down to Virginia...I saw that one...which is why I was surprised when I saw another equally or even more brilliant meteor in early Oct and didn't hear/read one peep of news coverage. I was actually driving home from Cape Cod and in fact was crossing the Bourne Bridge when I saw this one during twilight (I think I recall seeing clock in my car reading 7:20)...I travelled from my right to my left at about a 10 O clock angle (I was travelling in a northerly direction)...it actually had a greenish color to it
