How Does Your Garden Grow?
-
We got a dusting one early morning, but it melted again right away. We're free and clear now, just took off the snow tires. I've pruned Nanking cherry and black current shrubs, dug out or clipped wild raspberry canes from front flower bed. I started preparing a new place to divide rhubarb into. Ironic to pamper some fruit and dig out wild raspberries I know, but I let them grow in quite a few places in the back garden area, and wild of course nearby. Letting them take over the front perennial flower area would be a bit much. I like to got pretty natural, but I do like those double daffodils, bearded Irises...

I only have two or three specimens, shades of blue with some subtle colour. I've drooled over others in the catalogs. One day I'll get some more, but I'm putting emphasis on the edible garden. One great thing about daylillys is the buds are delicious. I don't like picking many though, the flowers are so nice. The normal varieties I have out back I don't mind thinning. I do love multi-purpose edible plants. Pansies and those little violas are edible. Calendula petals can be used as a saphron substitute. Oops! I just found out an Iris arrived in the mail for planting! What a coincidence. I forgot I ordered one, it says it's a reblooming one, "Immortality." Must have been my wishful thinking kicking in. I wonder what colour it is?

I have 3 colors so far... 1 is white petals and lavender petals, with dark purple markings and then a yellow beard...it's gorgeous... a pretty yellow one and then a beautiful two tone orange one. I love them. I have a link for a formal garden, with tons of different colors. I'll find it an post it for you... I love the edible flowers also... violas, pansies (they are really pretty sugared) nasturtiums and day lillies. I didn't know that about the calendula petals... I really really love fresh basil with fresh tomatos.... yummmy! My garden is overrun with spearmint... I can't get rid of it.. it's like a weed... really good with teas and lemonade and sherberts. The lilacs are blooming now... I don't have any**sigh** but my girlfriend has hugh bushes of them.... I love their scent and used to have a dark purple, light purple and white bush.... I kept hugh vases of them all throughout the house.... Heavenly.... I also love wild honeysuckle for their scent and try to always keep individual blossoms close by for a quick scent pick-me-up I bought alot of freesias also this year.... more scent... ahhhhh Now if only I could get an orange tree and have it blossom...

Well I had a look in my shed and sadly the lawn mover hadn't been stolen over winter, so it had to come out for a trip today as my neighbours are putting me to shame. Not the only unwanted item found in my shed... There's evidence - lots of evidence - that a family of rats have overwintered in the building shredding an old sheet used for painting as bedding with dropping galore and signs that they have been plundering the compost bin for food with a network of runs established under the slabs direct to the bin. No sign of them at present suggesting they've moved on elsewhere - the plan being to secure the runs and holes in the shed to restrict access next winter. Back to the mowing - now reading my mower maintainence/good grass keeping manual I should have drained my mower of fuel last autumn putting fresh fuel in for use now. I should also raise the ride height of the blade so that I only cut the top 1/3rd of the fresh grass for it's first cut gradually lowering it to the height I intend over several cuts, maintaining the cut weekly onwards. I, of course, showing my stubbornness did none of that, I've dragged the mower out as left last winter and raised my chest in pride as it fired easily on the first time of asking. I suspect that is much the same scenario played out in gardens across the nation - do you know what? The grass keeps growing regardless of my stubborn resistance to "managing it" properly No cricket pitch or bowling green but sufficient for my family and dogs to enjoy. Next to weed the borders and find some bedding plants for a bit of colour..... Next week perhaps? Martin

The slideshow worked fine, I pressed the button, sat back and enjoyed the show! Beautiful! Thanks, love2travel! Martin, you're funny! My husband will get out the mower when the grass is so long it's starting to look like a wild field. I do a lot of tricks with my garden photos to cut out the weeds! The flowers manage to grow somehow despite the fact I can never keep up.

Martin, are you related to my husband? lol He mows the grass when I tell him we're going to have to tie balloons on our dogs' collars so they don't get lost in the "jungle". My daffodils bloomed late this year. We're going to start getting our veggie garden ready for planting.

just trimmed the bush for now

So far I have planted potatoes, cabbage, onions, and lettuce. We're having a cold front this weekend and I'm little worried the frost might get some of them. Some of my hostess are coming back up, and I plan on planting multiple types of flowers after Mother's Day. Can't wait. Oh..and the garden tiller's wheel broke, so gotta get that fixed.
-
we haven't planted our veggies yet. Have to wait till mid to late May so pretty soon ...if the weather co-operates.

Last year I didn't plant veggies until early June, I guess I'm getting a little head start. I still have cucumbers, squash, tomatoes and corn to plant.

You should be ok where you are. I'm near Chicago & it's gonna be 35 tomorrow nite! I knew last week when it got to 80, it was too soon! I can't wait for fresh tomatoes. I love them.

That sounds wonderful Anita. I was hoping to spend a weekend in the garden this weekend, sowing seeds in the greenhouse and planting out in the flower and vegetable beds. Unfortunately though, winter seems to have come back. There's a cold north-east wind and driving rain, so it looks as if I'll be watching the garden from inside the house instead tomorrow.

Tomato plants are ready to put in veggie garden, along with oregano & cat mint. My pink multi-colour rose bush is blooming. Waiting for the 3 in 1 Spirea bush we ordered to arrive. We're getting rid of an ugly yew bush & replacing it with the Spirea, which will have pink, white & lavendar flowers.

I tried roses several time, had some beautiful ones, but the aphids ate them up, and I'm not into fussing over things. So now I have lillies and things that are beautiful but combat the weeds themselves. Our lilacs are small, started blooming a couple of years ago, look ready to bloom soon this year. The daffodils are blooming in big clumps, I've been giving away table flowers. I planted garlic and shalot sets, cucumbers have sprouted inside and are under plant lights. Watching for more things to emerge, my daughter was an eager helper this year so there's lots to germinate.
