Eighties, Nineties, Noughties etc

Just a passing thought as the year end ticks over: Has anyone seen in print or heard in popular dialogue a term to describe this particular decade yet? we've had 2010, 2011, 2012 so far and now we enter the period of the teens: thirteen, fourteen, fifteen etc to the end of the decade. Will, or has, a term already developed that will become the popular tag for the period 2010 - 2019? It seems odd that we're entering the fourth year of this decade already without an obvious popular name for it. Or has it just slipped by me alone? Martin

Hmm... I think the term "early 1900's" covers up to "the roaring twenties." - from there it was pretty straight forward (30's,40's, etc...) So, I'm going with "Early 2000's" = 2001-2019 (2000 will always be "Y2K")

As with all things these days it comes down to what shortened type I say make it ...Y2K+ until we reach the 20's anyway! In the future children won't be taught to write, to take pen in hand, just type and probably create computer codes...

Inspired by posts here I did a little browsing on this subject. In 2009 the UK Newpaper The Guardian had this article on exactly this dilemma: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/dec/07/end-noughties-name-next-decade And in the same year the UK's The Telegraph reported the results of a vox pop poll of the time: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/6825112/Twenty-Tens-to-become-nickname-for-next-decade-survey-says.html There's also the word the Twens floating around, being a contraction of TWenty-teNS . Certainly the articles all acknowledge the dilemma that while 2013 - 2019 sit nicely with something to do with "teens" 2010 - 2012 do not. I'm liking the poll favourite the Twenty-Tens at the moment, but this isn't a poll here that will define the outcome, it's how the world decides to label the decade that matters. As the first article points out we didn't settle with confidence on the Noughties for the period 2000 - 2009 until very late into the decade, Martin

Funny how 30% can be a majority rule. I guess it shows how little we all agree on things.
Reaching back further in time for an example- the "Eighteen Tens" seems to roll off the tongue better than Twenty Tens. ... but "Nineteen Tens" isn't much more pleasant. Incidentally, this is the first time I've heard the phrase "Noughties." -

No, I wasn't arguing. Martinput's second article spoke about a survey where people voted their favorite phrase. "Twenty Tens" won with 30% of the vote.

Funny thing is here in the US I think 2,000's has caught on much more the noughties. Probably just the way most of us think of it here. Another way to think of the first decade is pre 9 11 and post 9 11. 2010 to 2020? Hmmmm................................................. The 2010's?
