Please STOP Texting and Selfies While Driving

There are more and more stories everyday and everywhere about deadly and disabling accidents because of these dangerous practices. My brother was up Friday and told me about a girl passing a car near where he lives while texting. She hit another car head on and killed 2 young children. 4 teenagers were using that "speed app" and ran into a tanker truck full of oil or fuel of some sort and they all burned to death. There was a news story on the other night where a young woman was taking a selfie and crashed, and then took another one of herself while being rolled to the ambulance. INSANE!!!

I'd be fine if the idiots doing this only killed themselves, but too often they take out innocent bystanders and survive themselves.

I am hoping that our fellow boardies will share their stories about local and other related events concerning this very sad problem. If we can inspire and dissuade even one person...then we have done well.

Some people are really morons when it comes to putting their phones away while driving. I've seen drivers all over the road because they're too busy texting. I've seen people with a ciggie in one hand & cell phone in the other, driving with their knees!

There is a very graphic photo someone sent me once. His brother was a state trooper. The guy had been texting, the tractor trailer in front of him stopped short. His car was just at the height that when his car went under the back of the tractor trailer...it was at neck height.
The phone was STILL in his hand in a texting clench...the rest was graphic enough...that if they starting showing that type of photo to school children. They would probably stop texting for good!! You can't un-see something, that real life, and not get the message!! -
True, Love2. When I took Driver's Training, the instructor showed footage of actual accident victims still in their cars and others thrown out of their cars on the pavement waiting for the ambulance. The horrific groans of pain and screams never left me, and I was so scared to not pay attention to my driving after that when I got my license.

^ oh so true. There are so many you tubes, so sad the bride to be, who just had to get a selfie on the way to her bridal shower...dead. It they taught young children to shame their parents into not texting, I think that might work too! My girlfriend got hit by a driver who drifted into her lane. It spun her car into the guard rail and totaled the car!! When her car started spinning, she saw the guy who hit her car, just drive off!!! What a jerk!
Luckily she was just scraped and bruised... -
And some people are beyond idiots. They text while driving, get into accidents & yet they continue with the same stupidity over & over. It's a shame that cell phones don't automatically shut down when people are driving.

I remember a little over 10 years ago when everyone was emailing pics and stuff a lot back and forth before social media sites blossomed. There was one that went around concerning texting while driving. It showed a picture of a heavy set man who had run into the front of a truck tractor. They were pulling his severed upper torso out of the wreckage and you could see his spinal cord dangling down.

There are probably tons of photos like that... Maybe they should show them...do you think it would affect more people to stop? My pet peeve now is the texters at red lights...the light turns green they don't notice until it's just about to turn red, then they're the only one through the intersection!!!
almost was late to work because of them!! They should have something that makes your phone turn off when you're in a vehicle. The technology is there. If you watch people getting off a bus or a train these days, they immediately pull out their phone to check it, and just stand there... blocking the other people exiting!!!

I agree - I have to admit I did it several times until I ran off the road (fortunately there was nothing there to hit)....And take it from me, that kind of close call is an instant cure for the 'drive and text' crowd

And it's beyond annoying not to mention very selfish, when the light turns green & the twit in front of you is STILL texting & refuses to budge, even when you blast the horn at them. And sometimes there isn't any safe way to go around them either.

I heard that accidents relative to this problem are up 40 to 50% over last year.

Was late to work, took a route with a lot of lights... Can't tell you how many times the light turned Green, and the lead car must have been busy texting...Making everyone else wait in line!! Finally someone honked, and the texter was the only one to make it through the light
grrrr there needs to be an invention that you can't text unless the engine of your car is turned off!! A way to save lives really! -
