Students Threaten Montreal Grand Prix
-
Students unhappy about a tuition rise in Quebec (Canada), have threatened to disrupt the Montreal Grand prix--big time. This event is one of, if not the, biggest on the Montreal calender. Their threats cancelled the pre-race meet & greet event, and merchants already struggling with dropped business due to student marches, fear, another "demonstration" will destroy any hope of recovering lost revenue. The students were threatening to block the main subway to the Grand Prix this morning. I haven't heard if this was successful. Anyone else know? What I do know is I am fed up with them, and their so-called supporters. (hangers-on, if you ask me). What do they teach these students anyways? Certainly not to be aware of what's going on beyond your own Province, that's for sure. Because if they were, they would know they already have the lowest tuition on the continent! For real. By thousands and thousands of dollars. (for Quebec-born students only btw). They should GROW UP and realise nothing gets handed to you in the real world, and be grateful they have such a sweet deal already. But you know the old saying: hand someone something on a silver platter, and they only want more. I say hurrah to Jacques Villineuve, ex Grand Prix racer, and a Quebec native, for having the courage to speak out, saying something similar to me. And as for those miscreants who have responded by sending threats, and other vile email,: Hey! He's only exercising his right of free speech. GROOOW UUUUP !!!

I saw there was some trouble last night, it's a shame because Montreal always seems to be a real highlight for the F1 guys.

Ok. I just saw on the News that the Grand Prix went on with no disruption at the actual race, PHEW! A guy named Hamilton took the checkered flag. .....I think I must be gettin' old. Most of the names of the racers aren't as familiar to me as they were 'bout 10 years ago.
They must've made most of the changes during the last 2 yrs, when I wasn't up to keeping track of things like that. Oh well. Fast sport, quick changes I guess. I still love to watch 'em tho.

Lol Hamilton has won the Canadian Grand Prix three times now and is a world champion!! The other two on the podium were pretty new though.

The Formula One organisation is very good at ""not noticing" local disruptions. Your student protests might have made local news media but it would take extreme direct action - such as laying on the track during the race - for it to register on the actual live broadcast itself. And the F1 security is wise to such thoughts as well. Besides the issues you highlighted, there were more pro-democracy protests supporting the people of Bahrain: http://m.cp24.com/news/20120609/120609_Quebec_Protests.html But none of that was allowed to trickle into the F1 race broadcasts. FOM may do their best to keep the protests out of the news but Twitter and other social networking has meant that very little stays quiet these days. There looks to have been clashes between students and police on Saturday night.

prefered the sport in the 1980s with my hero nelson piquet kicking nigel mansell ass despite the english media trying to paint the story very differently...i also enjoyed the amazing ayrton senna and the great alain prost....that was a great era for F1. dont get me wrong 'mansell' was possibly quicker or as quick as the three other driving legends i mentioned ,however he was not as good an all round driver and he was very poor at looking after and setting up the car which was crucial back then. best drivers of the 1980's 1. senna 2.piquet 3.prost 4.mansell

That's how I feel myself. Including the order of 1-4. They were also in the '90's as well. What an era that was!
