Apple fans thread

Anyone dl the new Apple device OS iOS 6 today? I did. I only had the other one about 4 days. I was a bit nervous 'cause I didn't really know what was going on and remeber a few mths. ago when the latest Mac OS came out there wre some problems with installing it. From what I've come across online some people find the Apple maps that have replaced Google Maps, for obvious reasons, aren't up to much. I've found them o.k so far apart from misspelling my adopted hometown. The new IF for the Music ipod is a bit boring imo and I miss the old one already ha ha ha. Ah! such memories! The upload pics functionality is brilliant too. It's going to put a few of those app developers noses out of joint. I was going to add the twitpic and twit vid app to my new iphone sometime soon but don't think I need bother now. It's also brilliant for uploading vids to YT but doesn't allow uploading vids to FB which it really aught to. Best of all though is Lost Mode: If an iOS device is lost, Lost Mode triggers an attention grabbing sound, prompting the person who finds the iPhone to call a specific number set by the owner remotely. i thought they had that on the prvious iOS but I'd only had it 4 days so I'm not sure. I've pasted that from the official info so it seems a bit odd it's on there as if it's new if it's not. There's effectively no point to anyone stealing an iphone now!!!

Don't like the Apple ethos at all. I find the company far too controlling in their management of their devices. Although I know there are work-rounds for those willing to "Jailbreak - (an unauthorised change of the software to enable the download of unauthorised software)" their devices, I don't think that should be necessary to achieve the freedom I enjoy using the Android based device I have. Everything seems to have to be done through the iTunes software inextricably linked to Apple's iStore. Instances: I wanted to transfer photographs from my device to my wife's iPhone - neither my tech savvy son who also has a iPhone nor I could fathom out how to do it through the PC/Itunes software route. We resorted to e-mailing the images to the phone and the e-mail data limit meant several e-mails to achieve that. My son wanted to transfer music files to my wife's phone and the system synced a single folder on the PC with the contents on the phone deleting all but the new folder content. With four different devices with associations to the Itunes software on my PC and three separate iStore accounts the set-ups and permissions twixt and between are complex and "controlled" with the software having strong opinions on where and what can be used on which etc In contrast my device can just act as a media storage device, the option to use the devices dedicated media synchronisation software can be, and usually is, ignored. It can be seen just as another external drive and the folders within browsed and files moved and transferred to suit my needs. TV and media coverage of the latest launch shows the company has an almost cult like following for their products which they release with metronomic regularity - do those fans that bought the latest iPhone 4, just seemingly months ago, discard that in favour of the iPhone 5? From the hype it seems they most likely do. And why, oh why, has the latest iPhone 5 changed the size of the ubiquitous power/data transfer lead input? Even though the device is larger than the iPhone 4 the socket is now smaller - rendering all the accessories - docking ports, speakers etc previously used with other Apple devices useless with the iPhone 5. I appreciate that as a non-owner I haven't embraced instructions fully, but the devices in my own home that I have to assist with don't impress me. Sorry, but not for me. Martin

Well luckily for you The macca boards have a resident Apple Genius!
A.k.a a newly converted Apple evangelist who like playing around with his new gadget and is only too happy to try and help because if nothing else it helps me learn more. So... 1st off the email thing is completely unessesary and all due respect to you and your kid but if he couldn't figure out a better way to transfer pics than that then he really isn't 'tech savy'. Also you don't need to jailbreak an iphone. Mine's not. To move a photo try right clicking on it in the Iphoto's app, if you've got it...I'm on a Mac. Then click on Open Enclosing folder or the Windows equivalent which I think is called Open File Location. Then you can move or copy as any other file or doc.

I'm not sure what you mean there. Your wifes got an iphone so all you do is add music files to your itunes library and sycnh them.

You can do that with an iphone app but the drawback is itunes doesn't allow those kinds of apps you use, I've got one I love called USB Disk (see pic), to add folders so you can't move all your folders en masse like you can to an actual USB or SD card on an Android.

One thing I'm really getting annoied about is the 'Other' data that's indicated by the yellow bar on my iphones capacity in itunes. It's nearly a whole GB of memory and I want to know what it is and how or if I can get rid of it. I've googled and there seems to be a lot of people with this problem. If it get's a lot worse I'm going to have to reset my iphone to factory settings. Still It's better than the memory limitations and managments issues on my old Android. OOh! Just got an email from the Apple suport forums!

Thought I'd pop into Carphone warehouse to have a butchers on the iphone 5 today. Didn't realise they're not on sale outside the Apple stores till next week. They did have a demo model that one of them was walking around with. I was only really interested in seeing how it looked and felt with the new size. I don't like it. If they were going to resize it I think they aught to have given it a bit of extra widith as well or instead of height because we read text going horizontal so need more extra space going that way esp. as, from what I can tell, both Safari and Chrome apps don't have text flow which Android does and is along with that Yellow 'Other' stuff clogging up my memory the only thing I've not liked about my iphone so far. I've always though the iphone up to iphone 4 s was the optimum size for a mobile in regards to it feeeling comfortable in your hand and fitting in your pocket so I'm hoping they revert back to the old size by the time I want to upgrade.

Well i got an iPad todaybut im not entirely happy with it. It's got one massive drawback .... The keyboard is shit or rahtre using the keyboard is a very unsatisfying experience becuase the device itself is too wide to hold and use your thumbs to type letters in then middle of the keyboard. Whats really annoying about this is that there's the best part of an inch on either side made up of norhing but a black rim which if it could have been got rid of would make the decive thinner and consequently make typing easier while holding it with no loss in screen size. I can only think that it is not as weildly as it could be so people dont adopt it as a post-pc device because they don't want to or not yet throw the towel in on Mac sales. Two things: 1. Theyre making more money out of idevices even jsut iPads than they are Macs so theres no need to keep people buying macs jsut for the money 2. Steve jobs seemed pretty keen on using the phrase 'post pc-device' which implys no real sentiment to keeping pcs (and by that he meant personal computers in general not just Windows PCs...he was akaed specifically about this and explained he meant all Personal computers i.e Macs too) even a desire to create a PC killing device so it seems strange that The device he heralded so mmcuh which is the current epitome of a post-pc device has not been designed to enable typing to be as easy as possible. It's just too wide to comfortably hold in your hands and type...quite ludicrously so. So it's back to slumming it on my old Vista Windows PC. I'll probably keep this as an ereader and to use a portable auxiliary to my PC until I save up for a new Mac in the next year or two. Luckily I got a lot more money for my mac than I'd anticipated and didn't even have to pay anything...I actually got £93 voucher back so I'm not too cheesed off but not being able type comfortaly on an iPad is frustrating the crap out of me.

Found a solution to the difficulty in typing. The keyboard splits so your thumbs don't havE to reach right into the middle of the scrEen. Its still a bit awkward to hold and type and unless I significantlt increase my accracy then it's going to mean I can't post around the web anywhere near as much as I can on a pc which is a bit frustrating and i can forget about using it as a post-PC device to write at length on.

Can't work out how to sync my iCloud calendar across all my devices and it's pissing me off
