A 7.7 earthquake hit the northern BC coast just after 8pm local [BC] time. A Tsunami warning was issued for entire BC coast down to Oregon U.S.. And Hawaii islands is under a alert as well at this time. Remarkably, no serious injuries or major damage has been reported so far. This may be attributed to the lower population in the epicenter's area. Tsunami warning for BC has just been downgraded to advisory [midnite BC time]. A lot of jittery nerves here!

You Canadians be safe out there. I'm sure we'll hear more as the reports come in.... Some strange gravitational forces seem to be at work here.

The big differance is..the area where the storm(hurricane Sandy) hit the eastcoast(USA) is the most populated in the country. The area of Canada that was affected by the earthquake, well not so much.

That's what I like about Peter... he's just so reserved! What happens here does seem to pique people's interest, and will typically dominate the news. And this was/is some heavy sh!t that's happening.

Yeah, well, just over a hundred miles south and it would've as bad as New Zealand last year. Hummmmph. I didn't know you needed hundreds dead to make it news. Hurricane Sandy may be bad, but we had some scary moments here--and in Alaska/Hawaii/Washington State, too. Maybe that's why BC, and those 3 states are such friends. We're always being ignored, or dismissed by the East. :

Don't let one person's post make you feel like we don't care. I think we've been too caught up with our own worries (Sandy) unfortunately to notice other folks' concerns.

Hope you are OK!!! Friends in Hawaii said they're OK, got evacuated for the tsunami but everything turned out OK. Of course you all are sitting out there on that Super volcano hotspot that's been rising... That will really draw some attention to your area if it starts to form!!!

That it will! You know it's a dang good thing it didn't strike in a more populated area, or both Canada and the U.S. would've been dealing with a double disasture on opposite sides at the same time. That woulda broke the bank! As it was we were pretty shook up here. The aftershocks have reached 6. Not exactly mild. It was the biggest since 1949 btw.

I see someone had to put their oar in. duh behave. Laura's post was the first i knew about it why blanket sodden coverage of first the boring election ( from our point of view does'nt matter who gets in we will still be crapped on) about two right wing nutjob; then basically just scaremonging about a storm. I saw a couple of governors and they just gave simple basic advice, due to the low deathpoll most people took it and the authorities were prepared. And yes i am aware that it is a local responsiblity not a federal one. Personally I wished all the deaths have been morons called newsmen going out in conditions and putting emergency service lives at risk. The world is a big place and nature happens to bite mankind in the arse sometimes but i would like to see some British news and other world news on the station that i pay a tax for.

You know Peter, sometimes a pain in the arse is what you are. : A lot of people were affected by this. I bet if the superstorm and/or earthquake hit your patch that's all you'd talk about! [sticks her fingers in her ears and sticks her tonque at ya !] Oye!

Where did i criticise any member here talking about the natural events in their area? No, I didn't. I dont do drama before an event I work around it please refer to in coming snow the night before a macca gig in london. I just headed up a day earlier, i didnt care about being stranded after the gig. We of course dont get storms on the south coast we dont even get hurricanes according to the met centre and mr fish. It is all sun sea and sandy beaches here. I am old school i hate the overblown hypefilled news reports a thing the BBC is now riddled with; i just want news reported in a neutral manner with facts and not superstion and opinion. As for horror stories from earthquakes I have had them from hampshire firemen who used to go as relief workers. They do this today , but one retired, without pay the costs are paid for by donations from the public.
