Why McCartney skipped New Mexico
-
Here is an interesting article on the OUT THERE tour and why places like New Mexico and Horsens get stiffed: http://elpasotimes.typepad.com/pullen/2013/04/why-did-mccartney-tour-bypass-the-area-money-i-suspect.html

Interesting. Sounds like money has everything to do with it and someone in his organization may be looking at area unemployment rates, income levels, age of population, etc. to figure out how much discretionary income there is in a given city as the article mentions that term.

Yeah, and if the info is correct, there will be ten US dates, six of which are already spoken for. That leaves four more concerts. I feel like Charlie waiting to see who gets the golden ticket!

Money, that's what he wants.

And apparently that's what he gets.

Maybe the school got sequestered? cuts hurt Also I don't think he's coming to Austin for profit or the show would be in the stadium and not the arena.
-
Well, it is a bit optimistic to think McCartney is playing in Austin just for the romance of it, and not for profit. Austin is a very progressive city with a vigorous economy. An arena with 15,000 seats and a pricing scheme for tickets between $250 to $50 can generate quite a bit of money. Las Cruces-El Paso-Albuquerque, where most of the NM tickets would have been sold, could not sustain a price scheme like that. The article said Las Cruces could guarantee $1 million for an arena show. Austin will probably generate $2 million for an arena show. It just makes sense to play Austin or Tulsa, another city with a lot of money, if your main goal is to NOT play unless you are paid $2 million per show. Big names do come to Albuquerque. The Who, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Tom Petty, just to name a few. But they obviously will play for $1 million a show, or would when they played here. Still, NMSU was willing to do a show at the stadium to draw 28,000 which surely would have generated the fee. But now looking at the tour, the May shows are all arena concerts, and in July are stadiums. So Las Cruces didn't have a chance in the end.

Hasn't the student population largely vacated the city by that date as well, Rob?

Yeah, that could be a factor. All of this added up to a perfect storm of McCartney NOT playing New Mexico. Still, I think the article explains a lot and actually supports a lot of what I had said prior to the OUT THERE tour announcements. I honestly did not expect a show here anyway. I just don't like getting my hopes up then have them tossed aside.

It makes the world go 'round, I suppose!
At least James McCartney is coming to New Mexico later this month. I am going to try and attend that performance. I really like him.

I totally understand the frustration of not having Paul play in New Mexico. I feel super lucky to be on the East Coast, since he always seems to play somewhere within driving distance. In terms of money, though, I kind of get where his people are coming from. Yeah, you want to play in places you haven't played before and you don't want to leave people hanging. But at the same time, the shows are SUPER expensive to put on (I'd actually wager in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per show), as Paul transports all of his own equipment (speakers, stage, instruments, pyrotechnics, etc etc etc) and has to pay and feed every single person who's necessary for setting up, running, and then pulling down everything. And that's not even including the people back at MPL who do the publicity and everything! Ultimately, even to break even with that sort of thing (and I'd say it's less about his paycheck at the end of the day than paying the guys he works with a decent wage), he has to make sure that he'll sell a decent number of tickets. He also has to price them at a level that allows him to bring in enough revenue to do everything above. So I guess he's forced to think about the bottom line more than I'd guess even he wants to.

I'd put money all promoters do this sort of thing after all they want to make a profit and will miss out places that they feel wont give them the coin they want.

Yeah, it's a money decision. But I can make my own money decision, ie whether or not to travel out of state to see a concert (I won't). Or buy a new CD (at this point, probably not. Why? What's the point?). Or buy the Wings Over America release (I was at the show, why should I keep sending money that direction when I am obviously not the market being targeted?). And I doubt McCartney fans in Horsens are all that motivated to travel to Warsaw or Vienna to see McCartney at this point. Maybe they will.
