I listened to a little over an hour tonight of the podcast done by Chris and Paul. The first 30 minutes is background on the making of the album and the packaging of the record.  They both described the album as being a bit "jammy" and defiant in the lyric content of songs. Paul mentioned for the most part he loved the vocals on this album. As for the songs, I heard what they thought of the album up until "Lavatory Lil", I will listen to the rest in the very near future. They both liked "Long Tailed Winter Bird" as a opener, enjoyed the guitar picking and the sound of the drums.  Paul mentioned his wife is not really a "McCartney" fan and when he first played the song she asked him who it was and when he said "McCartney she did not believe him -lol. She obviously like the song also.  I was a bit surprised about their reaction to "Find My Way", they did not like it as much as I thought they would and I personally love it.  They said it was the one song that does not fit with the rest of the songs on the album, compared it to "Fine Line" being on CHAOS. They did like it lyrically and seemed to appreciate the video of the song.  They said it sounded a bit too much like he was trying for a hit single. Both Chris and Paul were not big fans of "Pretty Boys", song did nothing for them and definitely not a highlight of the album to them. "Woman and Wives" got mixed reaction from them, Paul did not like the vocal (McCartney's old man voice) on the song and Chris did like the vocal.  Next up was "Lavatory Lil" and they both loved it -lol. They like that it rocked and McCartney wrote a song about being "pissed off" with somebody. They related it to the song "Angry" off the "Press To Play" album.

The next song up when I resume listening will be "Deep Deep Feeling". At the top of the broadcast, Paul said his favorite song was one of the "Deep" songs and his least favorite was one of the "Deep"" songs - lol.. Final thought is Paul is doing a nice job on the podcast with Chris but still miss Ryan.

Listened to the remaining part of podcast a few minutes ago and right off the bat, you come to the conclusion that Paul likes this album much more than Chris. First song mentioned was "Deep Deep Feeeling" and Paul loved it because it was the most experimental track and he found it emotional.  He loved the vocals on the track also, Chris liked that it was experimental but was not overtly impressed. When Chris said "Slidin" continued the "slump" of the album, I  knew he definitely was not a fan of this record. Paul loved it the "rockiness" of this song and McCartney's vocal. Was surprised that song most people and critics liked (The Kiss Of Venus) was not a favorite of Chris and Paul. Chris liked the harpsichord on the song but thought the vocal was very weak. Paul like the acoustic sound and lyrics but also thought the vocal was not very good. Chris finally seemed to like a song and called it the hightlight of the album and the song was "Seize The Day". McCartney said the song in his opinion was very Beatlelike and both of the guys disagreed They both were not a fan of "Deep Down". Paul called it another McCartney "horny "song and did not like the fake horns on the song.  Chris said it was just a "jam" song to him and that "Deep Deep Feeeling" was better because at least it was experimental. Paul said he liked "When Winter Comes" but it had to grow on him, they both remarked how jarring it was to hear the difference in Mccartney's voice in the 1990's compared to now on the same album. Chris was positive about the song but not glowingly like other critics.

IMO, Chris is not a big fan of the record and only really seemed to really like 1 or 2 songs. Paul was much more into the album .  I don't believe they think the album is bad, it just is not a top 5-10 McCartney album in their opinion. I must say I was a bit surprised, I really thought this album was going to be liked by them more than they expressed.  Any way, very entertaining podcast and worth a listen.

Yankeefan I want to thank you so much for this really nice review. Unfortunately, I can’t download apps on my phone and in the US it looks like you need a Pod Bean app to listen to these. My friend in England tried to send me a couple of links, they just didn’t work for me. If anyone has a link for this that doesn’t require an app or a sign into through Google, please send it to me!!! I would greatly Appreciate it!

Thanks so much Yankeefan for your detailed summary of the latest "Take it Away" Podcast on McCartney III.   I will have to hear it in full at a later time.  I have had company (relatives) over the last week.  Perhaps because of Ryan's very sad  "passing" right before McCartney III's release, and because Chris is still feeling "shock" by what happened,  it still may be  very hard for him to get excited by any album  at this time.

In terms of their overall review, I was a little surprised that both hosts (Chris and Paul) picked Lavatory Lil as one of their highlight's on McCartney III. I looked at probably all the major prior reviews and "Lil" was not generally regarded as one of its best songs.  A little "slight" in lyrical content, I didn't love it initially.  I have to say however that upon repeated listens, Macca's "rocking" guitar playing and vocals did turn me around on the track.  It gave the album its first, albeit quite  short "rocker".

As far as the 2 "feeling" songs, I had a similar experience as the hosts with these  longer "jam" like tracks.   I initially liked "Deep Down" (next to last track) the better of the 2.  At the end of the day, I now like "Deep Deep Feeling" better.  I didn't like "Deep Deep Feeling" on the first few listens but it grew a lot with me.  I know critics used the term "Experimental" to describe the song, but what I liked best was all the "changes" that occured in the track..  It didn't stay boring and repetitious to me after I got used to it.  I particularly liked the beautiful  piano chords that began at the  2:25 minute mark and I never got tired of that repeated melody line.  I also liked the way the electric guitar lines followed along with Paul's bass and drums.  Paul also did a nice job of weaving his  changing lyric verses throughout the song.  The 8 plus minutes really seemed like 4 once I got into the song.  Conversely, "Deep Down" never grew as much with me as a song.  It stayed basically with the same melodic patern and same words for the most part.  I kept thinking just how much better this soul/R& B song would be done "live" with real horns.  Anyway, not a dud but not one of the best tracks in my opinion.

From your detailed description of the Podcast, I'm still surprised that there wasn't more excitement over the 3 songs that followed "Deep Deep Feeling" (the 6th track).  After many listens, I still consider those 3 tracks (Slidin, The kiss of Venus, and Seize the Day) the best part of the album and a definite highlight.  Sounds like they both enjoyed the opening and closing songs which I do too.  I did feel initially that the opener (Long Tailer Winter Bird) was a tad long but I grew to like it and I loved the closer (When Winter Comes) especially how it tied lyricaly the whole album together.

Like you, I have always loved the experimental feel of "Find My Way" and I have always liked Pretty Boys and Women and Wives.  I consider both tracks to be especially good lyrically.  From your summary of the Podcast, I think I like McCartney III better than the hosts and that is ok.  The same has been somewhat true here on Maccaboard.  I give a lot of extra credit on  albums that feel like an "album" instead of a "collection" of songs.  While McCartney III may not have as many great, great classics like  McCartney 1, BOTR,  Tug of War, Flaming Pie, Chaos etc, it's very consistent (no clunkers) and it flows very well from beginning to end.  It's significantly better in my opinion than Paul's weaker or mediocre albums.  Thanks again for your "Take It Away"summary.

Did Chris mention that he's still struggling internally with Ryan's tragic accident.

BJ, I don't recall Chris mentioning that he is struggling with Ryan's death on this episode. Chris gets more into that subject in the Ryan tribute episodes.  Listening to these podcasts, I try and jot down some notes about it to convey on this board.  I may not totally express their opinions  100% accurately and that is why it is still good to give it a listen when you can.  I decided to break up the podcasts and listen to them in 60 minute segments. One it is easier to have peace and quiet for an hour at a time and second it gives me time to digest what I heard.

I would say the biggest surprise to me was that they were really not enthusiastic about "Find My Way" and "Slidin" which is generally very well liked even by people who are not as a big a fan as you of the album.  While I would have liked them to really love the album I am also ok with their opinions. I know these podcasts have people who are into McCartney's solo music and don't dismiss this part of his career. I am glad they are not complete "fanboys" and that is what makes the podcasts even better IMO !!!

Hope you get a chance to listen in the near future !!

P.S.  Off topic on this thread but a poster named "McCall" had awesome idea on the "McCartney III Imagined" thread.  "McCall" stated they should have done "Imagined" type album with other artists but including all three of the "McCartney solo" albums.  I thought that was awesome idea and I could have handled that concept so much better, I  told the poster he/she should be on the McCartney Managemnt team because that is an awesome idea IMO.
