Paul's Performing Quirks
-
Since my "Ringo's Performing Quirks" thread quickly turned into quirks of Paul's, how about dedicating a thread to it here. This is not about one-time changes, but changes he's kept doing to the songs for years or decades. Some observations we've already heard: Nancy R: Paul does the same thing, such as changing the lyric in Golden Slumbers from "sleep pretty darling" to "sleep little darling." And in Hey Jude and others, he has to "jazz it up" by singing part of it higher (drives me crazy when he does that!) moptops: Yeah irks me too... That "movement you need...is ON YOUR SHOULDER!!!" and in Let It Be... "Mother Mary COMES TO MEEEEE!!!" ...like some insect has crawled into his shorts and suddenly bit him... me: Yes, and for a while there Paul was singing "in my darkest hour" in "Let It Be." rich n: During the 89/90 tour as well as the 93 tour, the line that says 'there will be an answer', he always jazzed it up to 'You know there's going to be an answer' (a number of additional words in the same length measure) me: "Band on the Run," where he now sings: "BUT, we're (you're) never gonna be fou-hound, WOH NO!" rich n: I think Paul's been doing that to Band on the Run since at least the Wings Over America tour - just like on Jet, where (after he sings 'Much Later') he adds that 'Ooh she said....Ooh she said'...that's been for as a long as I've been hearing him sing that song live

Here's the Ringo thread: http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=88417&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 Another one of Paul's is jazzing up the end of "I Saw Her Standing There": Since I saaaw herrr staaaan-DIN THEH-EHHHRE!
-
Another permanent change - live and let die (not sure if this one counts since I don't think it involves an actual change in lyric so much as a intentional permanent emphasis on the line in question.... during the final portion of the second/final verse...he sings: 'Say live and let die' (boom/explosion from pyrotechnics) (background 'live and let die') then he screams 'SAY LIVE AND LET DIE' (sometimes tailing that with a shadowing 'LET DIE'...so that he sings that part 'SAY LIVE AND LET DIE-LET DI-I-IE) (background 'live and let die) So obviously I'm referring to the screaming line - of course he also adds the 'WOOOO'. 'OWWWWWW', ect during the instrumental part

Speaking of that song, I like the way he ended it during the 89/90 tour; I'm Never Going To Dance With Another - WOOOOOO (but this time the 'WOOOO' changes notes to quickly descend down, almost like having fun trying to fool the audience)...watch this video from about 2:45

How about when he often will sing 'flavor' instead of 'favor' during 'Let'em In'...but in that case, I don't think it's 'assigned' to a specific verse....just know that when you hear the song live from Paul, you'll most likely hear the word 'flavor' at least once...LOL

Live and Let Die... "When d-you were young..."
-
Not that it bothers me in the slightest...in fact, I like when things get switched up. But on the ending of 1985 on the album they play a little outro of Band on the Run & he did it once at a live show in last couple years (I forget where) & I perked up like oh yeah. Here's that ending:

Haha, yes, he does love doing that, as well as the "flavor" thing rich n mentions! The other thing in "Live And Let Die" is the "you know you did, you know you did, you know you did," where on the record it stays pretty high in pitch, but in concert it often goes way down toward the end.

A friend put that show on DVD for me but I'll be darned if I can remember which show it was.

Tokyo, Japan 2013...the second concert.... Day Tripper. The only, ONLY time I've heard him sing "p**ck teaser" which of course were the original words. He didn't sing it this way on the first night, or the 3rd night (which is being televised), sadly!

C Moon. "...Mister Rast-a-far-ian carry me back, take me back.."

I remember hearing such a version during the rehearsal in Porto Alegre, on November 6, 2010. It was the night before the actual concert and a bunch of people (me included) were outside the stadium listening.

The only one I have is his insistence on singing on Lady Madonna "did you know that money was heaven sent" rather than the correct (and more logical) "did you think." Other than that, the only thing that bothers me is Rusty's botching of the guitar solo in Back In the USSR, but that's for another thread.

Whatever. Stay home and listen to a record. I'll go see him live with all his "quirks".

I could have sworn it was during a show. I'll check if I have any dvds from that show in 2010. Thanks 5th.

I don't mind varying from the record, but not all variations are for the better. For the record, I prefer his live treatment of "Maybe I'm Amazed," and the way he did "The Long and Winding Road" in '76 was great, too. A lot of these "quirks" keep the energy level up, which is fine when you're there.
-
I wish he varied these familiar songs more. The note-for -note recreations he does so much of the time make him sound like a Beatles (and sometimes Wings) tribute band. And yes, the 1976 live version of The Long and Winding Road is the definitive version!
