When we think of adding positivity to the world, turning aggression and pollution around, standing up for animals, and relieving suffering in general, meditation might be the single best first step that people can take.

I wonder how many McCartney fans here learned TM or meditate in other ways?

I think just as Paul and Linda McCartney helped bring vegetarianism to the forefront, the Beatles were influential in bringing meditation to the world.   Paul has said in interviews that he still practices TM, and that it's been a good influence in his life.

Back in the late '60s and early '70s, religious conservatives (my parents included) were afraid of meditation because they considered it was a form of "mind control," allowing something outside to take over... if that makes sense.   It's up to each person to decide what's best for them, but hopefully over time I hope people have been able to see that meditation can be a good relaxation technique and a tool for connecting with our inner selves.   If we can relax and contemplate what is within ourselves that needs to be changed, or let go, or improved, we can grow as a person, and show better behavior towards others and the world around us.. so I do feel it can help the world be a better place!   Change and empowerment begins with each person I think.

Thank you very much for starting this thread, Joan!  Spending some time each day enjoying a quiet and peaceful state of mind, would most certainly help all people to live in a less stressful human environment. Even sitting by a river and watching the water gently flow by, is a form of meditation. Watching the sun rise or set is another.

A few months ago, a nurse taught me how to meditate.  She was giving me breathing lessons and it morphed into meditating.  I spent most of my life moving and being active.  Meditation always sounded too slow to me.

Then I started doing it.  It's amazing how simple it is to let go of pain and stress.  You can't worry about all of our petty, man-made problems when you're in the moment, focusing on breathing in and breathing out.

I'm sure the world would be an infinitely better place if everyone meditated for an hour a day, but I don't do it to save the world.  I'm in it for purely selfish reasons.

Listened to this guy interviewed on the radio last night. Dr. Jacob Liberman actually corrected his vision problems through meditation. He has a new book out called, "Luminous Life" It sounds excellent!
