I really like Egypt Station, but listening to it gives me a headache. The drums just seem to cut through the mix. Am I just getting old?

So unless Eminem had some very last-minute surge that all the industry prognosticators missed, things look good.
Of note: While Paul has had a number of fairly recent albums in the U.S. Top 10 -- New and Memory Almost Full both debuted at no. 3 -- it's his first-ever solo no.1 debut in the U.S. and his first no. 1 at all since Tug of War back in 1982, when I was still young and skinny.

That would be great news and wonder if any artist has gone that many years between #1 albums if it officially happens. In 1982, I was skinnier and my hair was actually brown instead of grey - lol. I think CHAOS charted pretty well also. Only problem with recent albums is that they hit the charts in the top 10 but but don't last long.

Unless I've misconstrued, Egypt Station is Number Four on debut in Australia.
Extremely impressive. Looks like that decision to tour for the first time since 1993 (with rave reviews) is paying dividends down here.
Let's hope for a Billboard Number One.

Bruce, I agree with you...the generic movie ballad comment especially. Neither is bad, but neither is great. That said, over the past couple of releases, more often than not the first songs out have been middle of the pack, with the real gems on the album.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that. As I listened to it for the first time last night I was somewhat disappointed because both songs sound very flat, for a McCartney tune. The ballad "I Don't Know" kind of just meanders and reminds me of "I Want to Come Home," which he wrote for a movie soundtrack a few years back - which is ground McCartney has already covered - something that he rarely does. There's nothing really catchy or memorable about "IDK." "Come On To Me," though it is a rocker, is not very memorable either, with nothing really catchy to keep me interested. I was an instant fan of every album's lead single since I became a McCartney fan around the time of Driving Rain, but these two new songs just fall flat for me. I hope the rest of the album doesn't sound like this. Even the cover art isn't very original. It looks like George Harrison's album cover from 1982, 'Gone Troppo.' I wish I was alive during his heyday - or even the 1980's when his voice was a little stronger. This album is the first album that you can really start to tell he's getting up there in age. I've listened to both songs a handful of times since last night and I'm just disappointed that I waited 5 years for this. I expected it to be better. I agree with the post above - neither song is bad, but neither song is great.

Little correction: Chaos reached 6 on Billboard and 10 in the UK. Still thrilled about the top spot in Germany without any PA and the last 3 gigs in 2016.

I love the new album! To be honest, I have been a fan of Paul's solo albums lately, from Flaming Pie to New, but this one is better. Previous albums had its stand out tracks and some songs that were good, but I'd often skip. Not the case with this Egypt Station. I like each song. Some songs I like more than others, but even the ones that aren't my favourite, I don't skip them because it either has really great lyrics or a very catchy melody.
I am happy that Paul is promoting this album, he should, he should be proud of it, it's a good album. I am also pleased he is getting very good reviews and it's doing well (rumour has it: maybe going to number 1-that would be awesome). People complain about his voice, I actually was expecting his voice to sound worse! I was pleasantly surprised that I could only detect a few weak spots vocally. Some songs he really nailed it. The man is 76 years old; for a 76 year old rocker, he sounds good to me! I love his voice on songs like Hunt You Down and Ceaser Rock.
Some album observations (my opinion, of course!):
- The album reminds me of a mixture of what we love about Paul. It's very 'McCartney-ish'.
- Some songs sound like Wings or Beatles era, with the background harmonies and rockers. Come on To Me (still one of my favourites from the album) sounds like it could've been of the White Album. Ceaser Rock sounds like it could've been on Ram.
- The interesting, colourful album cover reminds me of Sgt. Pepper-an different cover to look, with a lot going on.
- The Opening Station reminds me of the opening sound of Sgt. Pepper when I first heard it.
- Songs like Despite Repeated Warnings and the Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link are so Paul. Different tempos, a mash up of different songs put together, woven beautifully, they flow seamlessly, somehow they all make sense!
- So many people hate Fuh You, but I always liked it! It damn catchy!! and if you take it for what it is, a fun pop song, McCartney is the king of writing those too, so why not add one to the album? Not every song has to be an emotional, soul-searching song. Some songs are just fun, and that's OK.
- I was worried about People Want Peace when I first heard about it. I was worried it would be 'preachy' or like Paul's song “Freedom” which I am not the biggest fan of. But it's neither. It has good lyrics, a great melody and great message.
- If I had to pick one stand-out for me, it would have to be Confidante. Love the words and the music is simply beautiful.I am so proud of him, he really did a great job on this album. So proud to be one of his fans.

Update: Final numbers from HitsDailyDouble are in and they show Paul solidly in #1, about 19,000 units ahead of Eminem. While this chart doesn't always exactly match Billboard's they're usually pretty close. And given that Billboard's preliminary estimate, as noted above, shows Paul coming in at #1, things look good.
Meanwhile, on the radio front, "Come On To Me" is taking off on Adult Contemporary radio. The broadest Mediabase chart of this format shows it at #12, picking up spins rapidly. By comparison, the "New" single peaked at #18 on AC and "Ever Present Past" peaked at #16 (per Billboard, which again may vary slightly from Mediabase, but not by all that much).

The Grammys are hard to predict, and they get flack all the time -- for decades -- for being out of touch with current music, whatever that happens to be at any given moment (for a laugh, look up Grammy winners from the late '60s). So that could cause a reluctance to give an award to an oldster like Paul. On the other hand, Grammy voters may think this might be their last chance ever to give Paul McCartney an Album of the Year Award, so he might win for sentimental reasons. But commercial success will help, for sure.

I think other oldsters like Robert Plant, Dylan and Steely Dan have won in the last 15-20 yrs. I know Beck won and while he is not as old as McCartney he still is not a 20 something. I agree with you about McCartney being the sentimental choice and like you said commercial success will play a factor. I would still not bet on him to win but I honestly think he has a chance.
