At the risk of repeating myself, this song is ordinary. At best. I love Paul, dearly, but this song is the least appealing song on Egypt Station. A great album. The song, though, just does nothing for me. It is bland. A horrid choice to help present the album to the world. Can't believe it made any 'best of' list.
Let's put this in perspecive. Sure, all of us on this board agree there are much better songs from Egypt Station that we wish were "honored" than that one. That being said, McCartney even making the top 50 list from Rolling Stone is a good thing because any publicity is usually good publicity. In addition, I believe the single did fairly well so maybe to the casual McCartney listener the song is better than we think. Finally, check out the artists who made the list with a top 50 song. Most of them are probably 40-50 years younger than McCartney and sell a bunch more records. So, I will take this "honor" as a compliment even though I would have loved another song from the album to make it.
All good points, and I am wrapt that Paul is on the list....I just cannot get into the song, and cannot believe it rated so high. Repeated listenings aren't working for me. Underwhelming. But, good on him. It's fantastic news.

"Come On To Me" is not bland at all. It's loud, its fast, its silly, and it basically rocks. Everything I want in a McCartney tune. Nothing more, nothing less. And I believe it did a pretty good job presenting "Egypt Station" to the world. It only debuted at NUMBER ONE!!!
I am not so sure it was the catalyst for the album reaching number one. In my opinion, a superior song would've done an even better job... but, like I say, good on Paul for making the list. I'm happy with that. I just don't think the song was anywhere near good enough to make it.

I think announcing all those US dates so far in advance with FREE cds given with each ticket helped it get to number one.

Understood, I feel the same way. I thought something like "Who Cares" should have been the first single and is a much better song.

Yes it did but other artists have done the same thing. I also think his team actually did a decent job of marketing the album .

Oh I think they did a good job of it too... but Paul NEVER announced shows so far in advance before & that is probably why. And yes, I know they all do it.

I think you can attribute a lot of the album's initial sales to that, with a boost also from Carpool Karaoke.

By the way, Egypt Station re-entered the Billboard 200 chart this week at no. 57. I attribute that 90% to a burst of concert ticket/CD bundles with the shows announced a few weeks ago and 10% to the Who Cares video (though of course that's just an educated guess. I have no proof of my theory).
Also, as of 12/29, Come On To Me is having a small revival on AC radio, inching back up to no. 33 per AllAccess. Down at that level it doesn't take a huge no. of spins to move up several notches, but still interesting.

"Who Cares" would have been a great choice. And with a better video, still with Emma Stone, it would have resonated... to the kids these days that have to put up with 'shite'. It could have been so much better, that video. And I would've loved to see Paul in that video just telling kids everything is OK.... it had the potential to make a real difference... of course, I am probably using an outdated term like 'video'... that being said, I HATE BULLYING. And I hate to see the effect it has on people. Especially young people. Daughters, sons, in particular. But, all people.
"Who Cares" would've made the perfect choice as opening single. A great song. A great message.
Sorry, the topic of 'bullying' gets me on my high-horse.

Yep, they missed opportunity with this song. After the song in the video, they should have had McCartney do a short statement against bullying. (kind of like public service announcement).
