Cream always rises to the top.  Hence the Beatles being there.  The Stones?  Good band, but all this so-called competition with the Beatles was just that:  So Called.  Maybe by their press agent?  The Beatles never considered the Stones to be competition.  That's good enough for me.  The Beatles had disbanded when Led Zep really got going, so one can't make a one on one comparison...on how each would have sold at the same time.  Their styles were completely different.  The Beatles constructed well-crafter tunes with perfect instrumentation for each one....nothing excessive; no lengthy guitar or drum solos.  But they could have.  We know that. Led Zep was the opposite.  Each were excellent at what they did...but Led Zep was mostly very lound and showy.  John Bonham was way over the top.  The Beatles just happened, overall, to be a better band with better crafted songs.  They could do it all.  Led Zep couldn't...or didn't demonstrate that they could.
