Forty years ago today (the Winter Rose / Love Awake promos)
-
Hard to believe that it was forty years ago today that Wings were down in Lympne Castle, Kent filming the promo films for Winter Rose / Love Awake. Ironically its a pity that Paul doesn't feature Winter Rose in his current live set as it would be one of the few Wings tracks he'd have trouble coping with today.

Love that song and the parent album.
Pretty extreme late Spring / early Summer weather there...

Great video and love his hair back then! His voice on Winter Rose sounded odd, though. Love Awake was beautiful!

It does but I like it. I'm sure it was a delibarate attempt to make his vocal sound 'cold'.

Maybe you and/or Kestrel can check this out but I believe Winter Rose and Love Awake were 2 separate songs that Paul recorded separately which can clearly show why his voice was considerably different on each song. It appears as though he just spliced the 2 songs together for the album. I also think on the "Take It Away" Podcast that the boys played a "live version" of just Love Awake that sounded incrredible. Getting back to the "Winter Rose" portion from the Back to the Egg studio version, I always thought that Paul sounded like he had a bad cold at the time. Such a shame that Paul never did either song (or both together) on one of his tours as they are real hidden gems on Back to the Egg.

From what I understand the basic instrumental track of Winter Rose was recorded in Scotland in July 1978 while the basic instrumental track for Love Awake was recorded in Kent that September. Both tracks were completed with vocal and brass overdubs at Abbey Road in March 1979.

Paul is such a genius at creating beautiful melodies that they get lost.
