The Beatles in their touring years always had McCartney on the left side, Harrison in the middle and Lennon on the far right. On the rooftop, Lennon and Harrison changed positions and Lennon was in the middle next to McCartney. Anybody have idea why they changed?

I think George didn't want to stand by Paul. They weren't exactly getting along great then.

Actually, there were other times they didn't stand in the "famous" lineup.

I have the pics on Photobucket and all are titled, so I just went through all the Beatles ones and found these. 😉

Perhaps George wanted to be closer to the chimney stack so he was sheltered from the cold wind?  Yoko and Maureen were certainly doing that. The Paul / George / John positioning had been maintained when they performed Revolution live on tv a few months earlier.

Interesting but a couple of them appear to be very early on and before Ringo was their drummer.

Yes, but as my great-grandmother used to say, "What's that got to do with the price of eggs?" The front lineup was George, Paul and John.

The difference is they were not famous yet and things changed when Epstein was their manager. He put them in suits, they had their style of haircut and maybe he had them positioned in the "famous" way for a reason.

Epstein was their manager when this was taken! (and the color one with Daily Echo in the background AND the middle b&w one) They were certainly quite famous in those last two! Plus they had their famous haircuts in all but one of the pics I posted.

Or not.  Maybe the person carrying the amps to the roof top placed George's in a place that dictated his position.  I used to wonder why the "Abbey Road" cover didn't have them in the....John, Paul, George and Ringo sequence, but I read that George said there was no discussion of who started first or was to be positioned in what order....when they started the walk across the street...there was a count down and then John just happened to step off the curb first, Ringo second.....  We're overthinking it.

Interestingly (considering only one cover photo was needed), they maintained the same order despite walking backwards and forwards on the crossing half a dozen times with short breaks in between.

winkI believe they kept the same order, however many times, because that's the way they had rehearsed it....the first time being the rehearsal.
