What a strange post from a McCartney "fan" ?!
Fantastic ! - this would have enhanced the original album significantly ! why wait till now ?
Obviously to make more $$$.
Yep, we all know he needs the money -lol. People on this board seem to like these "new" songs so it does make you wonder why he did not think they were good enough for the release of "Egypt Station".

Its not always about the quality of the songs though but the structure of the album and where the song can fit in,especially if other songs share similar arrangements. A good example is I Want You To Fly, a top notch track which was left off the Chaos & Creation album. The only reason I can see for why it was omitted was because it shared a very similar arrangement near its end to that of How Kind Of You, which was included.

Ok, where did "Fuh You" fit in with the rest of the album?

It fits in between Who Cares & Confidente. When the album was sequenced, the decision was made to place it there. Given that it doesn't sound like any other track it was probably a relatively easy decision to make, not only to include it but to place it. But to my original point, there had to be a reason why In A Hurry & Home Tonight weren't included on the original album. Either they were felt to be sub-standard compared to the other material or they sounded too similar to the other material .Personally I think its because the songs are substandard but its all subjective of course. For what ever reason, Paul didn't want those songs on his album and his decision should be respected.

Hey Yankeefan...good to see you back on the site. Still being newly married, I've been on Maccaboard much less also, but I still like reading a lot of the posts from time to time.
I think Kestrel really hit the nail on the head here. The guys on the "Take It Away" Podcasts had made similar comments regarding excellent tracks left off original albums even though they were clearly better than a few of the less than stellar tracks that were put on the album. As Kestrel said, it isn't always about the quality of the song but how it fits on the album in general. I think another good"example" from the Egypt Station sessions was the extra track "Get Started" which thankfully was added for the "Target" edition in the US. Personally I think "Get Started" is a far better song than "Fuh You" but perhaps Paul didn't include "Get Started" on the basic album's track list because "Get Started" had a similar "false ending" structurre as "Come On To Me". I still think there was another reason that Paul basically decided to put "Fuh You" on Egypt Station even though it was done with a different producer (Ryan Tedder) and co written with that same producer. My theory is that Paul was kind of "throwing the dice" with "Fuh You" hoping that it would get major airplay from commercial radio which would have helped Egypt Station greatly for overall sales. Unfortunately it never happened. As I have said, "Fuh You" didn't ruin Egypt Station as a big time Paul Solo fan and I still enjoy listening to Egypt Station without skipping tracks. I just think that "Fuh You" in general is beneith Paul's usual top notch writing standards especially lyric wise.
Personally I was plenty satisfied with Egype Station as a whole (I did get the Target edition so I still got "Get Started") so I don't think too much about how it could have been better. I'm still hoping that Paul eventually releases a "Post Beatles Anthology By Decade"...a 5 Disc Set (again by Decade). This would be a great package for Paul to include Singles, good "live" versions, rare recordings and unreleased tracks etc for that appropriate Decade. It's good to see that Paul is still so active writing new songs so that, for example, the 2010-2020 Disc would have plenty of excellent choices for that Decade's disc.

McCartney can do whatever he wants, just wonder why he makes certain decisions.

As we have stated times before BJ, we both have shaked our head about McCartney's decision making when it comes to selecting songs to be on albums and picking songs for singles. As a fan, I get weary of all the editions now of an album and then releases of this new single which was from the same Egypt Station sessions. It strikes me as all about the money than being for artistic purposes. (what do I know). Anyway, these two songs are ok and it is always nice to hear more songs from McCartney. Finally, I drop in once in awhile on the board and basically limit my posts to current things happening in McCartney's career that does not involve touring or his set list - lol.
-
Doesn't it seem that Paul has his reasons why he does this sort of thing?
Looking at the book by Luca Perasi, you can see Paul writes some songs and then releases them much later, sometimes more than a year later. Really found that book and his interpretations quite interesting... Paul's mind seems to think very deeply...something that originally made the BeaTles so fascinating and continues on in Paul's solo work. The fascination continues... what will Paul create next...

Question for you. Where would you place the songs just released on the original album?

I wouldn't. Much as I find Egypt Station to be a fairly forgettable, uninteresting album, the inclusion of the two 'new' songs (positioned anywhere on ES) wouldn't have improved the album at all.

Yankeefan...I can't answer your question at this point. I've only listened to the new singles/songs once. I do enjoy the Paul McCartney station on Spotify especially for all the Solo songs they play but at this point they don't seem to have added them yet. I also haven't heard the new singles on the Sirius Beatles' channel either. I like to hear new Macca songs in better quality compared to You-Tube on my lap top.
I have stated my position on Egypt Station many times. Like Bruce and others on this site (plus so many music critics who gave ES stellar reviews upon its release) I don't find ES to be forgettable and uninteresting in any way. I respect Kestrel's opinion and music is subjective but personally ES with the exception of Fuh You has very good Macca lyrics and melodies. I still enjoy hearing most of the ES tracks and I find songs like I Don't Know, Happy With You, Who Cares, Confidante, People Want Peace, Hand in Hand, Dominoes, Back in Brazil, Do It Now, Despite Repeated Warnings and Hunt You down/Naked etc. to be very memorable and interesting. This is my opinion only and as I said, I repect different opinions especially when it comes to music . I can just go by my ears and I dont get tired of ES. By the way, if Paul had written and released I Don't Know in the 70's it would be considered one of his very best Solo songs. In my opinion, it would have been right up there with Maybe I'm Amazed. It has that Long and Winding Road or Let It Be feel to it in my opinion. Unfortunately, many people who haven't kept up with Paul still can't get used to his "older voice". I never hear I Don't Know on the radio anywhere so it unfortunately gets lost even though it is a great song.

Let me just add that I can see why Paul didn't include "Home Tonight" and "In a Hurry" on ES in its original release. The one problem that I think ES had upon its release was that it was already too long. I like/love almost all the songs on ES so the only track that I wished wasn't included was "Fuh You". As I said, I think Paul was just "rolling the dice" on the song with the hope that it would "catch on" with Top 40 Radio. Afterall, Ryan Tedder has the reputation for creating "hits" and Paul probably thought it was just "quirky" enough to possibly be successful in Top 40. To me, the lyrics were cringeworthy and didn't fit well with the rest of the album, but you can't blame Paul for "rolling the dice"on the song. The melody on Fuh You was catchy and with only a tad over 3 minutes it didn't ruin the album for me personally. But with the length of ES already, I can understand why it was almost impossible to add more tracks. I like all the tracks on ES in general.
As a big fan of Paul's Solo career, my biggest disappointment for the album is that the truly great songs on ES got little to zero airplay (even on the Beatles Sirius Channel). Paul could have helped ES (and himself) if he would have played more of the best ES songs on his tour. As examples, not playing "I Don't Know", "People Want Peace", and "Dominoes" was crazy in my opinion. It takes rehearsal time and some drive on Paul's part and apparently at his age, he no longer wanted to put the time into doing it. Going so Beatle heavy in his setlist is so much easier.

"Fuh You" is catchy but I did not think it really fit with the rest of the album. In retrospect, I wish he had left it off the album and released it now as just a single. "I Don't Know" had to grow on me, did not really love it in the very beginning. It really is a beautiful song, love the piano in the beginning. From the start, I loved "Who Cares", "Confidante", "Do It Now" and "Despite Repeated Warnings" and thought "Who Cares" should have been the first single. I would still vote CHAOS as my #1 McCartney album but "Egypt Station" is definitely top 5 material.

Same here and its now probably my favourite track on the album, along with Happy With You & Hand In Hand. The opening piano piece has always reminded me of Stina Nordenstam's intro to 'Parliament Square'. Do you (or anyone else) hear any similarity between the two?

Good seeing your posts again Yankeefan. I had taken a big break from ES last Summer and Fall especially with our Wedding Plans etc. But after getting back to it in early 2019, I love it more than even previously. Regarding "I Don't Know", you might recall that I liked it from the beginning especially with the intro and the "But it's alright, sleep tight " part (just a great bridge) but it continued to grow even more with the overall lyrics in the middle (the "What's the matter with me parts etc. ) and then he comes back with the "I got crows at my window and dogs at my door part" at a slightly faster pace. I also like his older voice on it. Best song on the album imho and it's really frustrating when a song that good gets no airplay. The good thing is that the song (and others on ES) gets me back to playing the CD regularly. It still sounds fresh. Another song that has really grown on me is "People Want Peace". Love the arrangement and his band's background singing. And I also like the last third of ES with both Despite Repeated Warnings and Hunt You Down/Naked etc. Anyway, it's great that Paul can still write plenty of new songs at his age. As far as Solo albums and execution, I still think ES is top 3 along with Chaos and Tug of War. Hopefully, I'll start hearing "Home Tonight" and "In a Hurry" on Spotify or other outlets. More songs for possible inclusion on an eventual Solo Anthology in coming years.

Just a coincidence I guess unless Macca is a closet Stina fan?
