17. Distractions
18. Put It There (live version from Flowers in the Dirt Tour)

21. Tough on a Tightrope (B-side of "Only Love Remains" single
23. Tommy's Coming Home (Paul McCartney-Elvis Costello demo)
24. So Like Candy ((Paul McCartney-Elvis Costello demo)
25.. Twenty Fine Fingers (Paul McCartney-Elvis Costello demo)
Because I forgot a key song (Yvonne) from the obove list, I felt compelled to do a "80's Disc REVISION. Here it is:
1. One of These Days (from McCartney 2)
2. Tug of War (title track from the Tug of War Album)
3. Take It Away (from Tug of War)
4. Somebody Who Cares (one of great hidden gems from Tug of War; when the album came out, it was little James's favorite songs)
5. Balllroom Dancing (great track from Tug of War; since I'm suggesting the title for the Anthology to be"Sticking Out of My Back Pocket", you would have to put Ballroom Dancing on the 80's disc since the phrase is taking from this song)
6. The Pound is Sinking (great underpublicized track from Tug of War)
7. I'll Give You a Ring (terrific B-Side to the Take It Away Single)
8. The Other Me (one of my favorite underpublicized tracks from Pipes of Peace; great production from George Martin)
9. Through Out Love (great ending ballad to Pipes of Peace)
10. Simple As That (great song that Paul contributed to the Anti-Heroin Project; never on a Paul original album)
11. Lindiana (I really like this unreleased Paul ballad written for Linda)
12. On the Wings of a NIghtingale ( love this unreleased Paul song written for the Everly Brothers comback album)
13. Stranglehold (great hidden gem from Press to Play)
14. Footprints (great hidden gem and my favorite song on Press to Play
15.Only Love Remains (great ballad from Press to Play)
16. Yvonne (I forgot this great unreleased song from the Press to Play Sessions from the above list; it defiinitely needs to be included on a Paul Anthology 80's Disc
17. My Brave Face - Love this Paul/Elvis Costello song from Flowers in the Dirt; you could use the Paul/Elvis Demo as a alternative version
18. Distractions - great underpublicized track from Flowers in the Dirt
19. Put It There - one of my favortite songs from Flowers in the Dirt; I like a couple of "live" versions even better than the studio version
20. Back on My Feet - great B-Side to the "One Upon Long Ago" Single; another Paul/Elvis song
21. Loveliest Thing - (great B-side to the Figure of 8 single)
22. Flying to My Home (great B-side to the My Brave Face single)
23. Tough on a Tightrope (great B-side to the "Only Love Remains" single)
24. Tommy's Coming Home (great Paul/Elvis acoustic demo)
25. So Like Candy (great Paul/Elvis acoustic demo)
26. Twenty Fine Fingers (great Paul/Elvis acoustic demo)
I have to say that I'm just as excited with this 80's Disc as the great 70's Disc. There are some great unreleased songs to go along with Paul's albums from the 80's.
One thing I would like to add is that I think that Paul should use the exact same sequencing of Tug of War (the song) and Take It Away on Anthology/Compilation I'm suggesting here. The way that the two songs join each other from the original album is so great. I'm all in favor of using different type of "version"(as long as their good) on an Anthology rather than always using the same studio but this is an exception because joining these 2 songs the way George Martin did it was just perfect. I remember on Wingspan they separated Tug of War (the song) from Take It Away and the songs just didn't sound as good in my opinion.
What a great 80's Collection above if I do say so myself. The other thing I love is that there are 5 or 6 songs here that even many Paul fans don't really know. They might be vaguely familiar with the titles but they don't own them. For those fans these are like "new" Paul songs and that is what will drive them to "buy" a complete "Anthology"by Decade in the first place. The "Pure McCartney" Compilation didn't have nearly enough surprises for a true Paul hard core fan like me in my opinion. These "unrelease or rare" tracks would get me to "buy" the type of Anthology I'm suggestion without hesitation whether On-Line or at a Retail Store.

Just want to bring up some of the really good Paul "unreleased" songs on my lists. These are songs that even many Paul fans don't know. In my opinion, these songs are very important to a really "complete" McCartney Anthology. Here are my favorite Paul "unreleased" gems with a brief comment:
*Waterspout - love this song from the London Town Sessions. Yes, the lyrics are a little off the wall but the melody is so catchy.
*Cage - Another unreleased song from the Back to the Egg Sessions. Nancy put a youtube video of Cage on this post. Take a look at it. It is another very catchy song that I remember Laurence Juber saying that it was one of his favorite songs during the sessions but like many of these Paul unreleased songs never made the album.
*Sally G - This song was released as a B-side to Junior's Side but I would think many Paul fans proably aren't aware of this nice little "country" song. Paul, as fans here know, recorded the song when the Band was in Nashville.
*Simple As That - I think Paul wrote this during the Pipes of Peace Sessions and I believe it was released as part of an Anti-Heroin Project. I love the song and should be part of a "complete" Paul Anthology for the 80's Decade
*Lindiana - Another unreleased Paul gem in my opinion written during the mid 80's. A beautiful ballad!
* On the Wings of a Nightingale - The Paul song he wrote for the Everly Brothers comeback in the mid -80's. As good as the Everly Brothers Single was (a top 40 Song on the Country Charts) I think Paul's demo is better. Definitely should be on complete Paul Anthology for sure on the 80's Disc.
* Yvonne - A great Paul/Eric Stwart cowritten track written during the Press to Play sessions. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT I FORGOT TO PUT "YVONNE" ON MY FINAL 80'S LIST. If it was up to me, this is another "Unreleased" Paul song that is a must on a Complete Paul Anthology down the road. Eric Stewart and 10CC put out their version of Yvonne on a subsequent album but I think Paul's version is better. Such a great song that never made it on Press to Play.
*I Can't Imagine - This song was released as a B-Side to C'Mon People and it was put on the 2nd CD of Off The Ground/The Complete Works package only released in Netherlands and Germany. Listening to "I Can't Imagine"again for this project, I just love the song. Can't believe it wasn't on the original Off The Ground CD! Just a beauiful song!
*Love Come Tumbling Down - Great underappreciated gem that was the B-Side to Beautiful Night.
* I Love This House - While it has a definite 80's Production sound, I like this song, It is very catchy and Paul is joined by David Gilmour on guitar.
* Love Mix -Another Unreleased song and I love it even more than I Love this House. It's a multi-part song with Paul combining 2 songs. Love this song!
*My Soul - Great "unknown" song with Paul collaborating with Natin Sawhney.
* Cut Me Some Slack - great rocker that Paul wrote with the surviving members of Nivana
* In the Blink of an Eye - a beautiful song that Paul wrote for the Ethel and Ernest Movie
And of course there are additional underappreciated and relatively unknown Paul songs that others like Love2travel have recommended like:
*India
*222
*Celebration
Looking at all of these songs and all the really good B-sides on my lists is why a Paul Complete Anthology by Decade is so very viable in my opinion. As I have said, you can have a 150 Song Anthology (5 CD's) where 80-90% of the Songs are not on previous Paul Compilations and even most of the duplications can have different "live" versions.
I'm very curious...How many of you were very familiar with most of the songs above and which ones were you totally unknown to you.
The ones that were totally unknown to me were "Cage", "Simple As That", "I Love This House" and Soul". Quick note about "Sally G", it actually was charted separately from "Juniors Farm" and made it on the country music charts.
Thanks for your imput Yankeefan. I just was trying to give an idea with this list of just how many really good "rare" songs that McCartney has in his Catalog. Some are truly "unreleased" as far as I know (Waterspout, Cage, Lindiana, On the Wings of a Nightingale, Yvonne) and others have been released as B-sides or Bonus tracks.
When it comes to "unreleased" tracks I would personally want "complete" songs and not demo's that are not fully flushed and only parts of a song. The songs above are complete songs. A good example is the demo version of "On The Wings of a Nighingale". Even though it is a demo, the song is complete. The same with the Paul/Elvis Acoustic Demo's that came out as a Bonus Disc for the Flowers in the Dirt Archive Release. They are all complete and finished songs.
Simple As That was a bonus track on the rereleased Pipes of Peace CD/Album in 1993 (Called the Paul McCartney Collection Series). That's when I first became aware of it. I really like this song that is very "reggae" oriented. Perfect for the type of Anthology Compilation I've talking about specifically for the 80's Disc. Apparently "Simple As That" was also released as part of a "Anti-Heroin" Album but I have never seen it in record stores.
Cage - Nancy had posted the Youtube Video of this unreleased song from the Back to the Egg Sessions. I really like it!
I Love This House and Love Mix - Paul apparently wrote both songs originally in the mid 80's. He reintroduced both songs again as part of his Oobu Joobu Radio Series in the mid 90's. I don't know if he remixed the songs but they both sound really good. Again, perfect songs for an Anthology Project filled with rare songs and B-sides on top of Deeper tracks from his albums. I got turned onto many of these rare "extra" songs from specific albums on the "Take It Away"Podcasts that I first became aware of on this Site.
My Soul - I had seen this song and the video when it was released by this guy Natin Sawhney as part of his overall album. As far as I know,it was written exclusively by Paul and it is another one I really like.
I never knew that "Sally G" charted separately on the country charts. I always got a kick out of Paul's lyrics on "Sally G".
Another song that I included on my lists (for the 2000's disc I believe) is "Whole Life" that Paul wrote with Dave Stewart. I went on Youtube and it is another really good rocker in my opinion. I noticed on the video that "Paul's current band was involved with "Whole Life".
Again, this is my hope for a real Paul Mccartney "Anthology" for the true fans at some point filled with many "deep" cuts that I particularly like as well as the rare tracks you never hear on the Radio. As you say, it may not happen until Paul sadly is gone and the big question....could they really do it well or would it be another "greatest Hits" type of compilation.
Thanks again.
PS Do you like Yvonne, I Can't Imagine and Love Come Tumbling Down as much as I do. Talk about unapprecciated songs?
-
I like them all with "I Can't Imagine" being my favorite. Did you know Eric Stewart recorded "Yvonne" with 10cc years later and changed the title?

Yes, I agree especially about "I Can't Imagine". I can't get the melody out of my head whenever I hear it. Can't believe that Paul left it off the original Off the Ground album.
I really think that the Paul/Eric Stewart collaborations were highly underrated. I especially like songs like Stranglehold, Footprints and Tough on a Tightrope.
I had heard Eric and 10cc's version of "Yvonne" on the Take It Away podcast just one time but I like Paul's more acoustic version better. Just one of the unreleased songs I would love to have on a really "complete" Paul Anthology in a couple of years.

Before I stop posting about this crazy proposal for a future, more complete Paul McCartney Solo or Post Beatles' Anthology covering all his era's beginning in 1970. I am curious if anyone has a favorite "overlooked" gem that I missed on my various lists by Decade.
Looking at Youtube and Paul McCartney's Discography on Wikipedia I noticed a Paul 1977 Song with a curious title called "I Can't Write Another Song". While it is a simple song and a problem that Macca has never had in reality, I really like it and could certainly be included on a future Anthology.
Our there any other Paul songs I have missed here.

Off hand, I can't think of anything you missed. Great job !!

I had a thought the other night for McCartney's team regarding this project. They should make anthology and hopefully follow your thought out research and selections. In addition, they should make this Anthology a limited edition, like they did with the 50's Russian album years ago. The limited edition should be for only people who are registered fans on this board. The reason for my idea is it would probably reduce costs to make only so many copies of the Anthology and the people who would probably buy this type of thing are members of this board. In addition, this could be a neat collectors item for fans who have followed your career for years. Just a thought -lol

I think this subject (A Future Paul McCartney Post Beatles' Anthology by Decade) has run its course so I will stop posting for the time being. I appreciate all the Maccaboard members who have stayed with me through my various Lists by Decade and made their own comments like Nancy, Yankeefan, Love2Travel etc. I think I made my point that Paul needs a future and more complete Compilation that covers all his eras beginning in 1970 after the Beatles' fully disbanded.
Looking at one of the "Reviews" on Paul's last "Compilation" called "Pure McCartney" (released in June 2016) Pablo Gorondi from ABC News said "Still, Pure McCartney is a substantial, honest, and gratifying introduction to the long and winding career of a Pop Music giant, a tasting menu whetting the appetite for more". I think that this review sums up my personal feelinsg about Pure McCartney..."whetting the appetite for more".
As I started with this concept of a better "Anthology" of Paul's entire Post Beatles career, I felt the best way to approach a new and more complete Compilation is to do a breakdown of Paul's unbelievable career "by Decade". In that way, gaps will not occur. The next step was to purposely avoid almost all the most obviious song choices that everyone knows and has already been done by previous McCartney Compilations like "All the Best, Wings Greatest, Wingspan and Pure McCartney. That was the basis for my basic Tracklisting by Decade.
I think by dong this exercise, I have proven that Paul is a very unigue artist very much like the Beatles' were. Many of the Beatles' best songs were not their Singles or Biggest Sellers. Same thing for Paul in my opinion. As I looked at my lists for each Decade, I think that the overall quality of songs without including the Biggest Sellers/Hits were just as good. When I also looked at the full tracklist for the 2 disc, 39 song Standard Edition for Pure McCartney, I found that I only duplicated 7 Songs (Maybe I'm Amazed, Sing the Changes, Arrow Through Me, Too Much Rain, My Valentine, Only Mama Knows and Hope for the Future). That is from my total lists for a proposed new Paul Anthology of approximately150 songs. And even those 7 songs have good alternate "live" versions to totally differentiate the Basic Edition of Pure McCartney from a New McCartney Anthology I'm suggesting. As a "working title" for a new Anthology Package, I "borrowed" the title "Sticking Out of My Back Pocket" from new feature right here on Paul's own Website. I like the fact that the "Sticking Out of My Back Pocket" title construes the idea that the heavy concentratlion of songs in this New Anthology would be "deep cuts and even unreleased or special project songs". That's exactly what I've done if you look at the varuous tracklists per Decade I've proposed. Let me just add that when I's say "deep cuts" I'm thinking the"concept" here and not every specific song on my final lists on pages 5 and 6. There are a whole group of songs that I would still love on a future Paul Anthology that might take the place of other "deeper cut"songs on my final lists. Songs off the top of my head that didn't make my final lists but I was thinking about were... Dear Boy, Too Many People, Letting Go, Treat Her Gently, Don't Let It Bring You Down, Old Siam Sir, Waterfalls, Golden Earth Girl, Off the Ground (the song) Jenny Wren, Friends to Go, Vintage Clothes, the End of the End etc etc. Again, I'm thinking the "concept" here and not every specific song on my lists.
Since "Pure McCartney" came out in June of 2016, I'm hoping that this New Anthology would be released somewhere in 2022 or 2023. It could also be around Paul's 80th Birthday, a real milestone. I think this Anthology wouild be viable and successful for this "target" audience:
*first and foremost... for the hard core McCartney fans. They would want this package for all the unreleased songs, B-Sides, Special project songs etc. that Paul wrote or cowrote. They would also want this package (I'm thinking that a 5 Disc Set would retail in the $50 to $70 range) for the "convenience" of having all thise songs in one package.
* average Paul fans who in general like his music. Once they read about all the Paul songs they might not be (or only vaguely} familiar with, they would want it too. The publicity generated around this Anthology would be about all the "rare" songs included in this package built around his entire 60 year plus career. That would entice many to buy this package alone.
Again, thank for your attention on this matter. Hopefully we will see sometime in the future (over the next couple of years) whether a New Complete Paul McCartney Anthology will be in the cards. He certainly has the "Back Catalog in his tremendous vaults" if his people feel it is a viable future project.

Thanks Nancy and also thanks for sending my posts on this subject to a couple of your friends. Over the last couple of days, I felt I was pretty much done with my thoughts for a future Paul McCartney Anthology covering all 5 Decades of his Post Beatles' work. Hopefully, it will catch the eye of someone from Paul's Marketing team in the future and we will get a great Anthology. I actually had fun doing it.
I will continue to read your posts as I always find them a fun read.

Thanks Yankeefan. As I said in my reply to Nancy, I had a lot of fun doing these McCartney lists per Decade. Paul has so many underrated and underpublicized songs when you consider all the years that have gone by and he has never stopped writing songs. I still think there is a great amount of "quality" for each Decade without duplicationg previous Compilations with more of the same "Greatest Hits" themes.
The one thing I think we know right now is that the next Archive/Remaster will be Flaming Pie due in July 2020. I would then think the next one would be London Town and Back to the Egg sometime in 2021. That is why I don't think Paul's team would be looking at a new Career Defining Compilation/Anthology until 2022 which would interestingly coinside with Paul's 80th Birthday. Let's hope we put some ideas in their heads through these Lists By Decade. I would think that they may already be thinking about a new Compilation/Anthology anyway because I think it makes a lot of sense timewise and "Big Project" launches are normally planned out a few years ahead in the first place. We'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks! Did you listen to my radio interview with Audi? See the thread about Beatle Chat On Modern Metro Radio in What's That You're Doing.
Hey Nancy,
Haven't listened to your interview yet. Will get to it. Thanks

20. I Love This House - Unreleased but Paul put it on one of his "Oobu Jooby Shows"; David Gilmour on guitar

25. No Other Baby - great cover on Run Devil Run that Paul makes his own; I've seen a "Lipa Performance" where's Paul's vocal was fabulous
26. Lonesome Town - great Ricky Nelson cover on Run Devil Run that Paul makes his own; several "live" versions that are great
My 90's List above is a good example of what I mean when I say "looking at the overall concept" of this kind of "Career Spanning Anthology" raither than looking at all the actual individual songs themselves.
On the whole I like my list above because of the variety of songs (many B-sides and excellent "live" versions when Paul's voice was top notch) even though Paul only had 2 full albums of original McCartney songs released during the 90's...Off the Ground and Flaming Pie. Besides the wonderful Flaming Pie, he did have many good "leftover" songs from the original Off the Ground Album which made my list. The other surprise album in the 90's (albeit mostly cover songs) was Run Devil Run. Paul's voice was wonderful on the studio album but he also had some great performances during the subsequent live shows to promote Run Devil Run.
When I look at the above list however, I feel like I kind of shortchanged a couple of the best songs from Flaming Pie. I might have done that subconsciously because Paul was generous with Flaming Pie songs on the Pure McCartney Compilation. Still, if it was totally up to me, I would have to include "Little Willow" which I inadvertently left off this list. I personally think that "Little Willow" would make a "Top 10" list of all time Paul's Solo songs. Not only do I love Paul's lyrics, but I also love Jeff Lynne's production help. I could easily substitiute "Little Willow" for either "Peace in the Neighborhood" or "C'Mon People". I was never thrilled with the studio versions of those songs on Off the Ground. The main reason I chose them was because I really liked a couple "Live Versions" of the songs that in my opinion were far superior than the studio performances.
Another possible song inclusion for the 90's might be "Broomstick" a virtually unknown B-Side on the Young Boy Single. Again, "Broomstick" is q perfect song that this type of Career Spanning Paul Anthology. It's a good song that even hard core McCartney fans don't either know or don't have in their collections.
My final possible substitution to the above 90's List would be a song from Paul's quickly done MTV "Unplugged" Performance and supsequent surprise album released in June 1991. To make the 90's Disc really unigue, I would add one of the songs that Paul and Band performed on the "Unplugged" Show called "Midnight Special". It was done on the show but was never included on the subsequent "Unplugged" album that many fans (including myselt) bought. What a surprise if it was included on the 90's Disc for the Anthology.
So many choices for each Decade's tracklist and I would leave that up to Paul's team but I think many fans can see what a great "Career Spanning" Post Beatles' Paul Anthology this could be. I would be first in line to buy it.

Couldn't agree more Yankeefan about "Little Willow" over either Peace in the Neighborhood and C'Mon People. I couldn't believe that I had inadvertently left "Little Willow" off my 90's Disc list. Just too many Paul songs to consider!
I will be very interested once we see the tracklisting for the "Archive" FP Release supposedly coming out in July this year. I'll be especially interested in seeing the "bonus tracks" that hopefully will be available in an affordable 2 Disc package a from Target. Will be get some studio outtakes/demo's from various FP songs on the 2nd Disc? We should also get B-sides from the FP singles which includes "Looking For You" and "Broomstick" from the "Young Boy" Single. Personally, I like "Broomstick" better. There are also 2 B-Sides from the "Beautiful Night" Single. They were "Love Come Tumbling Down" and "Same Love". All 4 of the B-Sides could be included on a future type of Paul Anthology By Decade I'm suggesting. I had already put "Love Come Tumbling Down" on my proposed 90's Disc above. It is another great "unknown" gem in my opinion and is perfect for an Anthology type of future package for fans.

2000-2010 Decade for Proposed 5 CD Paul McCartney Anthology called "Sticking Out of My Back Pocket"
1. Vanilla Sky - Title song for the Tom Cruise Movie "Vanilla Sky" in 2001
2. Lonely Road - Choose the best "live" track for this Driving Rain song
3. Your Loving Flame - Choose the best "live" track for this great ballad from Driving Rain
4. About You - great underpublicized rocker from Driving Rain
5. Magic - One of the great hidden tracks from Driving Rain about the day that Paul met Linda
6. Your Way - Another terrific hidden "countryish" song from Driving Rain
7. Back to the Sunshine Again - Really good "soulful" song from Driving Rain cowritten by Paul and his son James; Love Paul's soulful vocal a la Al Green.
8. Whole Life - A Paul and Dave Stewart cowritten rocker written for the Nelson Mandela Benefit. Great rocker written around the 2004-2005 time period. Paul's Band also plays on the track
9. How Kind of You - Terrific hidden gem from Chaos and Creation
10. Riding to Vanity Fair - In my opinion, the best song on Chaos and Creation and a little different for Paul
11. Too Much Rain - Another great song on Chaos and Creation
12. A Certain Softness - In my opinion, the most underrated song on Chaos and Creation with great production
13. Summer of 59 - (Great B-side on the Jenny Wren Single

25. Dance Till We're High - Great underrated track from Electric Arguments
26. Sun is Shining - Another hidden gem from Electric Arguments
Looking back at the various Decades of Paul's Career, I was probably the most satisfied with my above LIst for the 2000-2010 period. It felt good that Yankeefan loved it too.
In my opinion, Paul had his best back-to-back albums (Chaos and Creation, Memory Almost Full) in the middle of the decade since Band on the Run and Venus and Mars. And it didn't hurt that's Paul's beginning and end of the Decade was pretty darn good (Driving Rain and Electric Arguments). Unlike many, I liked many of the songs on Driving Rain so I feel as though it is an underrated Paul Album.
As far as tweeking the above list, you can always make some subtle changes and I'm would be just as happy with a few changes. Here are my thoughts:
*I would still stay away from adding the "Singles" that were released from Chaos ( Fine Line, Jenny Wren, This Never Happened Before that were also on Pure McCartney) but I could easily see adding "At the Mercy" or "Friends to Go". The two latter songs are terrific and were not on Pure McCartney nor did Paul perform them on his subsequent tours.
*You could add the above Chaos songs and delete a couple from Driving Rain like Lonely Road, Your Loving Flame or one of the deeper cuts I listed like Back in the Sunshine Again. Another song that arguably could be added to the above List would be from Memory Almost Full..."The End of the End". That's a great song in my opinion and really speaks to the latter part of his career.
Again, these are changes that I would have no problem with. The whole point of this future Career Spanning Anthology is to focus on the more "deeper cuts" but still great Paul songs.

I agree with adding "Friends To Go" and one other song I would suggest is "Promise To You Girl". I was not a big fan of "Your Loving Flame" so I would have no problem with that being replaced -lol. One final thought about this thread, it makes me sad in a way that there is so much great music that you listed that will never be recognized or heard by many people. McCartney's career to most people is all about the Beatles/Wings and while that is understandable it still does not ignore the fact that he has been making fantastic music 40 years after Wings !! Outside of a few music critics and fans like yourself it is like this music never existed - oh well.
