1980 Wings Tour
-
Paul's recent tour leg cancellation in Japan had me thinking about the 1980 Wings Japan tour that never happened. I've seen some of the ads for that tour, as well as the tour program and other miscellaneous items, but I was wondering if anyone knows about a setlist? Was there a setlist ready to go? Was it the same as the 1979 Wings UK tour or were there changes? I remember from '79/'80, that there were some rehearsals of "Take It Away", 'Ebony and Ivory", "Ballroom Dancing", and a few others. If there is no actual setlist, what do you think Paul would have added from "McCartney II", "Tug of War", "Pipes of Peace", etc. had he continued touring into 1980, 81, 82, etc.?

Steve Holley told me they were going to include With a Little Luck, and a couple of others...meaning Beatles songs, which of course at the time people were clamouring tor. There was another Wings song he mentioned, the name of which escapes me now. The tour was to go to Australia and America after Japan...

If I remember correctly, "Let Me Roll It" was going to be brought back from the WOA tour, as well.

I just saw Steve Holley at Abbey Road On The River last weekend, I should have asked! I would have loved to hear a live version of "With a Little Luck" with Juber's live guitar work on it.

'Eleanor Rigby' was another 'new' song being rehearsed just prior to the Japanese tour.

Yes, With a Little Luck and Eleanor Rigby are the two big ones that I always hear brought up. It would really be wise for someone to interview PAUL while he's still with us on this topic. Surely if anyone should know, it would be him!

The setlist would have been slightly different. I reported in my book "Paul McCartney: Recording Sessions (1969-2013)" some of these songs they had rehearsed and considered to add, based upon interviews with Holley and Juber and some vintage documents. - Another Day - Baby's Request - With a Little Luck - Eleanor Rigby - Let Me Roll It

any thoughts? anyone know?

I think if Paul had toured for Tug of War, he would of course have played Ebony & Ivory and Take It Away, and maybe the title track and Wanderlust. I could totally see Wanderlust working live back then.

1982 Paul totally could have pulled it off...I'd still like to hear it live, but I know it won't touch the original.

Yep, wish he had because I would love to hear those live even today although sadly I don't think Mr McCartney could sing "Wanderlust" now.

Ebony & Ivory was played on the '89/90 tour. As to the aborted 1980 Wings tour, I also heard that Australia and the US were definitely scheduled after Japan. I never personally heard anything about what songs might have been in the setlist, tho.

I wonder if that is really true. I just finished book "Man On The Run" which was a book about Mr. McCartney from the 70's to very early 80's. In the book Mr. McCartney had doubts about the new Wings lineup live and everyone was worried because they went into Japan under rehearsed. Nowhere in the book did it mention plans after Japan and that was before the drug bust.

I was in the UK during the end of the 1979 tour. My friends there had been to all of the shows on the tour. So while yes, it's the "somebody talked to somebody" thing, everyone seemed to take it as a given that after Japan, there were dates planned for Australia and the US.

Can i just ask why you do always refer to Paul as "Mr McCartney", in every post, even more than once in the same post like above? I often wonder... it seems a bit formal.. we're fans of of Paul McCartney. If you love The Beatles do you refer to them in print as Mr Lennon, Mr Harrison, Mr Starr, and Mr McCartney?

Maybe he/she works for the New York Times :

Yes, it is formal but that's how I was taught at a very early age to refer to people when using their name in writing since I do not know them personally. The Beatles are a group so there is no reason to refer to them individually as Mister, I will just write the Beatles. If I specifically mention one of them individually than it is different. I understand we are fans and other people feel comfortable calling him Paul, to each their own.
