Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool
-
Old photo circa late 1940s to 1950s.
-
I stayed there during the 1986 Beatles Convention - I used to love the conventions, my first was in 1976 in Norwich where among the people I met was Richard Buskin who now lives in Chicago, is a successful writer and still very much a Beatleologist with a great podcast (Beatles Naked). Also met Cavern DJ Bob Wooler and early Beatles manager Allan Williams.

I always stay at the Adelphi when I visit Liverpool. Lovely building, so full of history. The stairs kept me fit too !!
Just reminded of one incident a few years back. I'd only just checked into my room when the phone rang. I thought it was reception but it turned out to be an elderly guy making an emergency phone call to reception but which had come through to my room instead. I manged to get his name and room number, phoned reception who sent up a medical team as the guy had said he'd fallen over and cracked his head open. That was a good start to my ...and his stay !!

People on the bus look like they're On Their Way To Work!
Good to have the recommendation. Am going to Liverpool when the plague is over. Hope Linda's photos are still there.

Oh, God, no WAY am I recommending you stay there! No A/C and the place (the rooms I mean) is a dump! Have heard many bad reviews from Beatles fans. If you want to spend a bit more, stay at the Hard Day's Night hotel! Fantastic!

Wasnt sure, thought they had a fire, because Shannon mentioned she lost paintings in a fire there.
I like the yesteryear interior, it looks beautiful. When travelling you wind up spending such little time in the room. I got to know a lady at my regular air BnB and she let me stay in her daughters room with a full english breakfast for £32 a night and free breakfast for my friend that I was visiting. Her air BnB cottage was luxurious, but I had more fun hanging with the family and her daughters stuffed animal collection.

The hotel is old and the furnishings dated but the rooms were always spotless, the food varied and very good and the staff very friendly and helpful. I've stayed there on about eight occasions and I've never had any reason to complain at all. And its a great location.

True about the location, but there are nicer hotels nearby that have A/C. Never again would I make the mistake I made in 2006 when I took my 19 year old twins and no place we stayed at had A/C! It was unusually hot that July and was awful! The last 2 times I went we stayed at the Hard Day's Night hotel - expensive, but worth it for the experience alone. If we can make it back for 2021 we'll stay at the Holiday Inn.
You've been lucky if you've stayed there that many times without a complaint - I've heard horror stories from other people who stayed there! I did eat lunch there in 2011 and 2016 and it was fine. (this was on the Sunday convention day of Beatleweek)

There was a fire there in 2017. I didn't think Shannon had paintings there, only at the Hard Day's Night Hotel.

Well just the other day I saw a £26 offer for a room at the Adelphi. Probably because of Covid
Shannon mentioned she lost paintings at a fire in the HDN Hotel. It took her 2 years to paint them.
When I visit friends in England, I have paid £32 to stay in my air BnB host's daughters bedroom after we became friends. Another BnB gives me a the family rate £42 after I stayed a few times. My point was that you only sleep in the room so why pay a fortune. This Adelphi Hotel looks like a great place to stay, in the middle of things and it looks like it's a classic British establishment which I enjoy . Plus Kestral gave it a great review. Good enough for me, Thanks Kestral!

You never said what year you paid £32.
I misunderstood and thought you were talking about the Adelphi & Shannon's paintings. The fire at the HDN hotel was in 2013:

Well, if you stay at the Adelphi (especially in the summer) and have a lousy experience, don't say I didn't warn you.

As long as my room isn't next to big Ben going off every hour and they have hot water, I should enjoy having more money to go more places!!
Thanks for the warning. I'll go and check out AHDN lobby

You can't. The only way you can get in is to show your keycard to the doorman. And the lobby is not the only thing to see. The entire circular staircase is lined with HUGE photos of the Beatles and there's memorabilia in the bottom floor below the lobby. The dining room and bars all have Beatles paintings. It's right around the corner from the Cavern Club and worth every penny to stay there, just for the experience (and A/C!)
P.S. Big Ben is in London, but I think you knew that.

I'm really not that fussed about it all. Don't worry, be happy.
The Big Ben and hot water and hotel problems, had to do with a classic British blue ray movie thay I just got. Their room was directly across from Big Ben and the room shook every hour LOL
