As I was watching the Harry and Meghan interview last night, I was sorry to hear that Meghan was so unhappy within the Royal Family, but couldn't also help wondering a few things....

      1. For all their talk about how bad the tabloid gossip is in Britain, why did they agree to such a public interview, where they in turn were bringing up issues that should have remained private?   It seems like Meghan realized she didn't fit in with the Royal Family and just wanted to make sure her side of the story was heard, in order to fight back against an institution that treated her unfairly.

      2. Meghan must have known that marrying into the Royal Family would be a different way of life for her.   If she didn't like the institution or what it represents, she could have chosen not to marry into it.   To me that's like being an advocate for gun control and then deciding to join the army and refusing to carry a weapon... if you know before joining you'd have to carry one, don't join in the first place... because you can't change what the military represents.   Work for peace instead.

I admire the Queen and the Royal Family very much.  IM0 the senior members of the family have given up and sacrificed many aspects of their privacy and personal lives in order to serve their country.  And even though they probably wouldn't have chosen that life, it's what they were dealt and they followed what they felt was their duty to the British people.

The Queen has a 70% approval rating.  Prince Charles has set up many charities and has tried to educate people about organic gardening and eating healthy, and saving historic buildings, etc.   Members of the Royal Family are also patrons of many charities which raises millions of dollars for health care, military veterans and the arts, so not everything they do or represent is all bad.

I watched the interview too and my take on it is that she loved Harry and was willing to give up everything to be with him. She admitted she was naive about the Royal Family but was willing to give it her all. Then she gets no instructions whatsoever on protocol, etc.!

I admire Harry so much for being willing to leave the U.K. in order to effectively save his family. I can't believe they took their security away though! This is the Queen's grandson and great grandson and now Meghan is expecting her great granddaughter!

I wholeheartedly sympathize with Meghan when she talked about how she wasn't supported by the "firm" and they didn't stick up for her and refute the lies that were being told in the tabloids.
The whole situation is really sad. It should never have come to this. But at least now, Harry and Meghan appear happy and content where they are.

People from the UK can correct me if I am wrong but their tax dollars pay for the security of the "Royal Family". Harry and Meghan did not want to fufill their duties as members of the "Royal Family" so why should the British people /government pay for their security. I believe Harry has a few million pounds from his mother's estate than he can use to pay for their own private security. So let me get this straight, you need to get away from the UK to save your family so you move to Los Angeles -lol. If you really wanted to keep low profile, move to some state like Idaho - ha ha.

Sorry but IMO Meghan being naive about the "Royal Family" does not pass the smell test. She is not some country bumpkin, she is an actress who I am sure is quite aware of things in the world. Even if she was supposedly naive about it before meeting Harry, she did not wonder what life with a member of the "Royal family" would entail when she seriously got involved with him.,  I don't believe it.

"But at least now, Harry and Meghan appear happy and content where they are."

So Harry gave up his career, his family and his country for his wife.  I think if you have to do that for any woman you may need to wonder why you married her.

Piers Morgan has a whole different view on her. BUT...who knows? There's always 2 sides to every story. That show won't be seen there till tonight so more news will come out tomorrow.

I'm not going to argue with you. Let's just agree to disagree. You probably didn't even watch the interview.

P.S. They wanted to stay in the U.K. initially and fulfill their duties, but the situation made them unable to. Meghan was not allowed to get the help (therapy) she needed! The security issue was secondary to her mental health. And yes, he got £10 million from his mother and that is what they live on and pay for their own security. They love each other, that is why they did what they did. Watch the interview.

^ Yankeefan, I agree. Did your wife tell you about the racist comments about what if her baby's skin was dark? (when she was carrying Archie)  They would only say that it wasn't the Queen or Philip who said it. My money is on Charles.

If I was placing bets, my guess would be that it was either Princess Anne or  Prince Andrew...  both of whom have been accused of making racist comments in the past.... or possibly Fergie, because she has been known to put her foot in her mouth occasionally..... but we probably will never know.

I am against racism in any form, but is it possible whoever made that comment could have said it out of concern for little Archie... and didn't phrase things in the right way... perhaps they were thinking if his skin was darker he'd feel out of place or different, and not part of the group, and they were wanting to discuss that, to make sure he was not excluded or treated differently... and since the Royal Family has never had a mixed race issue before, that person was just wanting to know how to best handle that.... If it was a staff member that said it,  they're very "planning oriented" and detailed to the point where everything has to be discussed and talked about beforehand, so no mistakes in protocol or handling an issue are made...  It was probably difficult for them to discuss, but that was the problem... it shouldn't have been brought up at all.

Not meaning to make excuses for the racial comment though.  I was just wondering if overthinking the issue of not excluding him was the cause...  and that's why the mistake was made.

The person spoke to Harry, that's why I think it was Charles. I doubt very seriously if any staff member would dare to bring up the subject! Harry would have had them fired immediately. It has to be a close family member, that is why he's not revealing who discussed it with him. Harry and Meghan also would not be as upset as they are unless the conversation was racist in nature, not "making sure he was not excluded or treated differently." My impression was that the person was asking Harry "What if the baby's skin is dark?!"

P.S. Meghan might not be the first mixed race British Royal:

I really wish you had watched or would get on the CBS app and watch it. Maybe then you could come to a more informed decision and have some compassion for them. There is no way they were making up any of it.

Thanks for your comments, Nancy.  What you wrote makes sense about staff members, that they wouldn't want to bring the subject up, because they'd be subject to being fired.  Hadn't thought of that.

Regarding Queen Charlotte, wife of George III being of mixed race... she was actually only 1/1024th northern african... her northern african (probably from Morocco) ancestor was from about 1300 (see link below).   IMO someone is mixed if their great-great grandparents or closer ancestors were full blooded African or Asian... that's 1/16th or closer percentage, so don't think Queen Charlotte qualifies as mixed.

A large percentage of caucasians have at least one arabic, Jewish or northern african ancestor (if not more)  because of the Crusades, when knights, soldiers and religious crusaders traveled to the Middle East and the Holy Land, and intermixed with arabs (called "Moors" then) and Jews who converted to Christianity.

She didn't prepare herself and Harry should have realized that.  He knew what was going to happen and should have helped prepare her.  Had he done so, she might have just chosen to not be a part of any of it.  She didn't know the very basics, such as she would be expected to curtsy.  Harry didn't bother to tell her that before the wedding?  When she found out, she said....."She's your grandmother!!"  He responded..."She's the Queen."  To him it was all just understod....or should have been.  It wasn't. Clearly she was in over her head.  Both she and he are more to blame than the "firm." ( In my opinion.)  Maybe William or Kate should have had dinner with her and Harry before the wedding to find out just what she imagined she was "in for."  Kate would have known ahead of time...she knew based on how she was brought up...and who she was.  Meghan was straight from Hollywood and the TV show "Suits."  She was used to something else entirely different.  Telling Oprah all about it was great for Oprah.  She's queen of a different sort and it helped her enormously.  Meghan?  Maybe not so much.  The royals know all about the media, the cheap tabloids, and their viciousness .  But, again....lack of preparation.  She and Harry are very very likeable and are happy together.  That's the best part.

^ Just to be clear, she didn't know she had to curtsy in private. She knew she would in public. (this happened when she and Harry were dating and she was first introduced to the Queen)  And why were no formal instructions given to her? She needed another female to teach her, not Harry. They never said if he asked. She just said they offered nothing. But the fact that they told her she couldn't get therapy was inexcusable. Harry has had therapy for years over the loss of his mother, so why couldn't Meghan?
