"Paul McCartney Sings Rock 'n' Roll"

When Abbey Road came out, one reviewer -- I forget who, alas -- commenting on "Oh! Darling" wrote, 'One of these days Apple has got to release an album called "Paul McCartney Sings Rock 'n' Roll.'" So, if they did, what tracks would you put on it? Here's my list -- one CD, 14 songs:
1. Getting Closer
2. Lonely Road
3. I Saw Her Standing There
4. Back in the USSR
5. Only Mama Knows
6. Honey Hush
7. Eat At Home
8. Oh! Darling!
9. I'm Down
10. The Mess
11. Shake a Hand
12. Helter Skelter
13. Letting Go (Wings Over America version)
14. Hi Hi Hi (Wings Over America version)

These are a couple I would substitute for a couple of your's. I can't even remember how Lonely Road or Shake a Hand go. Had to Google them, sorry. I can't remember also when I last listened to Driving Rain or Run Devil Run. I know, I'm a terrible solo Macca fan!

Very good list but I would add some of my personal favorites like "Beware My Love", "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", "About You" and "Soily".

About You - another one from Driving Rain I had to Google!
"Driving Rain" may not have been a great album but still had a few pretty good songs on it . The album was guitar oriented IMO and did have some very good McCartney vocals (Lonely Road, About You).

I would stick "Girls School" in there somewhere, this flip side to "Mull of Kintyre" is great and should have been a big hit....at least in America where "Mull..." was dismissed. The rest of the world got it, massive hit, but we didn't know what a Mull was and seemingly didn't care much to find out or to listen to a song about one.

Here is my "All Solo" Paul Rock and Roll CD
In no particular order:
1. Oh Woman Oh Why - great B-side to Another Day; great rocker and vocals
2. The Mess - "live at the Hague"...great Henry McCullough bluesy guitar solo and should have been on Red Rose Speedway
3. Best Friend "live in Antwerp" another track that should have been on the 2nd half of Red Rose Speedway. Who sings early Rock and Roll better than Paul?
4. Give Ireland Back to the Irish - great protest song and rocker that was banned in Great Britain. Would have made Wildlife a much better album imo.
5. No Other Baby - great Paul cover on Run Devil Run and the "live" version done at the Cavern Club was even better
6. Try Not to Cry - a Paul original on Run Devil Run...The "live version at the Caven Club is even better than the studio. Love David Gilmour's guitar solo
7. Shake a Hand - another Paul cover on Run Devil Run and the live version at the Cavern Club is even better. So glad that Bruce had this one on his list.
8. Run Devil Run - another Paul original and the title cut on Run Devil Run with great Paul vocals.
9. Lonely Road - great opening track on the Driving Rain CD...so glad Paul did it "live" on his subsequent tour.
10. About You - agree totally with Yankeefan and a great rocker on Driving Rain.
11. Sing the Changes - great "live version" when Paul appeared " live" in New York City at Citi Field. The best version imo. Love the way Paul gives NYC a little "nod" by adding it to the lyrics. Also love Abe's drumming!
12. Slidin - great rocker on McCartney 3 and just as good as Helter Skelter imo.
13. Only Mama Knows - great rocker on Memory Almost Full and so glad Paul did it "live" quite a bit.
14. The Pound is Sinking - great rocker on Tug of War; love Paul's vocals.
15. Flying to My Home - a great rocker that should have been on Flowers in the Dirt imo.

I like your list and like you said nobody sings early rock better than McCartney. Revisit the "Russian" album and listen to him sing rock classics like "Lucille" , "Twenty Flight Rock" and "Ain't That A Shame" and his voice is incredible. Hope all is well BJ.

And if we talk rock n roll.....
Not his greatest song.... to some... but "Name and Address" is great rock n roll.
I love it.

The title of the thread says "Paul McCartney Sings Rock And Roll" and since he has recorded covers I think it is fine to include them. If you want your list to only be originals than so be it.

Aside from singing as Paul McCartney, I've always thought Paul's ability to channel Little Richard, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, etc., was kind of extraordinary. Not many singers can pull that off.

I started the thread. I included covers in my list. It's "Paul McCartney Sings Rock 'n' Roll," not "Paul McCartney Writes rock 'n; Roll." -

I did preface it with... "For me".... I am guilty of always excluding covers in a "Best Of" when it comes to the Beatles, as a group or as individuals. I am not sure if it is conscious or sub-conscious. But... it happens.
