Which is the best remastered vinyl White Album version?
-
Now the White Album is my fave Beatle album, but only on vinyl. On CD I find it unlistenable I'm afraid, but hearing a flatmate's stereo vinyl White Album some years ago, it was an eye opener. Or ear opener...
It's the least dated of them all, the sound is clean yet grungey. It is awesome. Now all these albums have been remastered on quality heavy vinyl, but I am confused. Weren't some Beatle albums on vinyl digitally remastered, while later many of them were remastered from the analogue tapes, which most of us prefer? I am less bothered about the mono/stereo issue with that one, I think I might prefer the stereo version, though the mono Helter Skelter is the one that rocks. If I pick up the newly minted White Album in a London record store, will it be analogue remastered, or digitally remastered? Or was the White Album never remastered digitally?

Hi Inspector Sands! How are you? I hope all is well with you and your family. To be honest with you, its really difficult in telling which vinyl White album was analogue remastered or digitally remastered. There have been so many fake White album vinyl's that are being sold as analogue or digitally remastered and are not. In my opinion, there's only two White album Vinyl's that I really enjoy listening to, they are as follows: The White Album - 2 Vinyl Set - Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) - MFSL-2-072 The White Album - 2 White Color Vinyl Set - Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) - 1C 172-04 173/174 I do not know if you have ever heard these White album vinyl's but they sound fantastic!! The sound quality of these Vinyl's sound better when you raise the volume. You have to hear them to believe it.

The 2014 Mono vinyl remaster of the White Album, unlike the 2009 Mono CDs's, was done without any digital technology, "newly mastered from the analogue master tapes." The 2012 Stereo vinyl remasters were remastered using the "original 24 bit digital remasters" in a lengthy and technically exhausting process to ensure the best possible sound quality and vinyl pressing. I would venture to say that both versions are desirable to any Beatles fan.
My favorite collectible vinyl White Album would be the 70's Japanese pressing by Toshiba EMI/Apple. That one sounded better than any other I ever heard until these new versions.

Thanks both of you, though unfortunately the answer I was looking for: an analogue remaster of the stereo vinyl, seems to have eluded me! Ah well. Maybe I'll shop around for an older one. I think The White Album is the first one where the stereo often works in their favour. Or I could just go with the mono anyway.

The White Album - 2 Vinyl Set - Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) - MFSL-2-072 I have that one in mint condition and never been played!
