The essentials: Love Me Do (Michael Braun) The Beatles {Authorised Biography} (Hunter Davies) ...anything by Mark Lewisohn... The rest can be trashed.
That's a little harsh.
I would certainly allow: 'The Beatles From Cavern to Star Club' by Hans Olaf Gottfridsson & 'Liddypool: Birthplace of the Beatles' by David Bedford into any Beatles library.

I still think Hunter Davies' authorized bio from '68 is still essential. But Philip Norman and his "Shout!" can go jump off a cliff.
I'll agree only because he had their full cooperation, but he also wrote what they wanted and left things out on purpose so it's a bit of a whitewash. The Beatles Anthology is definitely essential!
The new bio has a nice write up in the latest Rolling Stone. Apparently Volumes II and III aren't even finished yet! 
I really hope Vol. III goes beyond the break-up into the solo years and the Threetles reunion! -

Not only did I read an interview where Lewisohn said he's only partway through Volume II, but there's an appeal at the end of Volume I where he asks anyone who personally knew the Beatles during the period 1963-70, or if anyone has any memorabilia or articles, to contact him. So he's definitely not finished. And silly me, I thought the 3 volumes would be all completed at once and released in successive years
Volume I took him 10 years I hope the next 2 don't take that long! -

That big book I have by Lewisohn from years back is so dry--just a compilation of day to day facts about which Beatle was doing what on that particular date. It's still useful info to have, though. I know I'll enjoy his new one so much more.

I've never read any book about The Beatles, but this one looks amazing in the amount of detail that's been put in. I now just can't decide if I should get the standard or deluxe edition.

Ahh I think I'll just pick up the standard one from Waterstones tomorrow, I can't justify spending £80 on the deluxe one :S

Paul McCartney said he doesn't plan to read Lewisohn's book (he was asked). Nor does he want to see the Freda Beatles secretary documentary. -
I wonder if he really won't read it, or is just saying that? Although he obviously lived it and knows what happened, it's not like he needs the info contained in it

I wouldn't be able to resist reading it, if I were Paul! But I can understand his stated stance (did he really mean that, though). He might get absolutely infuriated by some parts, and there's little he can do to rectify misinformation...he could come out in the press and refute the offending portions, say it's really not true...but he knows some wouldn't believe him... He was asked if he's going to read "In Tune" (is that the name of Lewisohn's new book?) and he replied, "No." Paul needs to realize the true tale of the Beatles has even been called "the greatest music story ever told," it's the epitome of the rags to riches show biz journey and is really fascinating--especially to those living through them vicariously, experiencing the glory that way
who wish they'd been that talented themselves. -
Mark does mention in the book that while he didn't interview Paul and Ringo specifically for this book, he's interviewed them in the past, and also they are aware of his book and have given permission to several personal associates of theirs to talk to Mark. So they have a passing involvement in it, at least.
