      DrBeatle:

I've gotten an advance copy of this book for review purposes and began reading it last night. I can't divulge anything more than that (had to sign release disclosure stating I'd keep it to myself, etc) but I will say that, 50 pages in, I already love it. I think this is going to live up to its hype as the definitive work on the band. I'll be publishing my review on my website once I'm finished and will post a link once I do.

Lucky you! I'm kinda glad you had to sign the pledge of secrecy, as I'm so looking forward to discovering it all myself. Happy reading!

The only problem is that I keep wanting to read and read and I really do need to get sleep so I can at least function properly at work the next day It's pretty gripping so far and I'm only at the stage where they're all teenagers (but haven't met yet). I'm getting the deluxe version when it's released in November and I fully intend to read that front to back as it's DOUBLE the length of this edition that I'm reading right now.

Any author who replies to a reader (and potential customer) with: "You need an enema. Really! Do something useful with your life" deserves a good kick in the face. Any Google search for "Bob Spitz Beatles Book errors" will bring up loads of hits. I advise everyone I know to AVOID this book. Seriously. Thanks for the tip I will be sure to avoid this book at all cost. to think I almost was close to checking this piece of crap book out at my local library .I am really looking forward to the new Lewisohn book. I know I sound like a broken record but am just so excited. And the price that I found for the deluxe version on amazon uk for this book was over 70 dollars. maybe it be more when other fees are added.

My mum bought me the Spitz book right when it was released as a Christmas gift. I didn't think much of his book after reading it, but once I saw what he was like online when confronted about the errors, I've made it my life's mission to dissuade people from reading that piece of shit book. The abridged (still 1000 page) version of Lewisohn's book will run you $24 on Amazon. The Deluxe is only for order on Amazon UK and is now at 74 pounds, so ~$130

I started reading You Never Give Me Your Money last night and couldn't put it down until 2:30am. I've had it for a while, but had never read it. Anyone know if Doggett's research holds water? He seems very even handed, trying to tell it from all four's perspective. Can't wait to get the new book. I did not see a Deluxe choice on Amazon.

I completely agree with Dr .Beatle. I adore the book You Never Give Me Your Money. I couldn't put it down once I started to read it. It goes into so much detail of the break-up and solo years, I learned new information about that time (which is rare for me because, as many of us know, once you read several books you know their story so well, we don't learn anything new anymore). I really like that the author doesn't play favourites in the book either. He praises them at times, but also points out their flaws/mistakes-a very good read for any Beatle fan.

Great point! Unlike a lot of other Beatles books, as you said, he doesn't play favorites...he's equally as harsh and praising of all 4 of them. Contrast that with someone like Philip Norman who worships John, hates Paul, and dismisses George and Ringo as afterthoughts. Lewisohn's book is the same as Doggett's...loads of new little revelations and giving all of them equal time. I'm nearly a quarter of the way through it and really enjoying it an incredible amount.

Deluxe is only on Amazon UK. Doggett's book is fantastic and very well researched. I would say it absolutely holds water, and when it came out, it was the first new Beatles book I'd read in probably 15 years that I actually learned something new from.

It's got to be good, then. Not long to wait, now.

The massive Bob Spitz Beatles book was highly enjoyable, I still maintain. I didn't notice a lot of errors.
