If we're going to get an album of obscure and unreleased material, there's stuff from the Driving Rain sessions that's been talked about but has never surfaced. One I remember hearing about is called "You Are Still Here," presumably about Linda and no doubt likely to make me choke up.

For a quick recap of our thoughts on a new 2023 Paul McCartney Album ..Although most Boardies only want a new Album if it is "brand new material". I proposed a "fill-in" type album full of Unreleased Songs and B-Sides until Paul has a brand new album ready.
My proposed "Starter CD" would have these 22 tracks:
- My Old Friend- written by the late and great Carl Perkins during the Tug of War Sessions.
- Goodbye - Paul's great Demo written for Mary Hopkin
- A Love For You- written during the Ram Sessions
- The Mess - B-Side to My Love
- Sally G. - B- Side to Junior's Farm
- Maybe I'm Amazed- Live Version on the Wings Over America Album
- Waterspout- Unreleased from the London Town sassions.
- Daytime Nighttime Suffering- B-Side to Goodnight Tonight Single
- Cage- Unreleased from the Back in to the Egg sessions
- Rainclouds- B-Side to Ebony and Ivory Single
- Yvonne's The One- Unreleased Song from the Press to Play Sessions
- On the Wings of a Nightingale- Unreleased and Paul's Demo Written for the Everly Brothers
- Loveliest Thing - B-Side to Figure of 8 Single
- Flying to My Home- B-Side to My Brave Face Single
- Back on My Feet- Paul's Demo written with Elvis Costello; Piano Only
- Once Upon a Long Ago- Single and Hit...only released in Great Britain
- I Can't Imagine - B-Side to C'Mon People
- Love Come Tumbling Down- B-Side to Beautiful Night Single
- No Other Baby - Single from Run Devil Run
- The Lover's That Never Were- Paul and Elvis Costello Demo with great vocals from Paul.
- Home Tonight- Single written during the Egypt Station Sessions and not on the finished Album
- In A Hurry - Single written during the Egypt Station Sessions and not on the Album
Even the Great Bruce Springsteen has "Fill-In" Albums when a New Release is not ready. In my opinion, the Tracklist above contains many high quality songs that casual McCartney/Beatle fans either don't know or vaguely know. The big question here is will it sell. I think it would sell if MPL really gets behind it from Marketing/Publicity point of view. Almost every song has a great story to tell especially considering all of these tracks did not make it on their respective, original albums.
What do you guys think and is there one or two "lost" gems that would make a great replacement to this list? It could be an unreleased and rare track that Paul collaborated with another Artist. It could be a rare "live" version that is much better than the studio and original version.
-
It is more of a Brian Wilson song than Paul McCartney song but adding song "Friend Like You" would be cool just because you have those two legends together. Not a great song but still IMO good addition because I think it is the only new song they ever recorded together. The B sides are great, and I would add "Summer of 59" which is one of my all-time B-side favorites.
As much as I would like to say this would sell, I don't believe it would even with a lot of publicity behind it. I just don't see a decent size audience that would shell out money for McCartney B-sides, demo's etc. This CD would have high quality music, but McCrtney's fan base is old and not into really buying music anymore.
IMO most live versions of Paul's songs are far superior to the studio version. For me, any live version of a "deep" cut type song is a good idea.
That is all for me, may disappear from here for a little bit. Got some things to do around the house and will be doing some short trips to visit some friends in the Carolina's.

One thing that got me back to this topic is the Paul McCartney Tribute Band Concert I saw on Friday night. Now this band advertised that their stage show would cover Paul's Solo, Wings and his Beatle periods. The Setlist did include a healthy amount of his Solo and Wings' eras but it got me thinking just how far they went into Paul's Post-Beatles career. Of the 30 songs they played, the newest song was from 1980 called "Coming Up". This is a point that Yankeefan makes here all the time. Paul has been writing new music (songs) for over 40 years since "Coming Up" was released. The point is that this Tribute Band did not play one song that Paul wrote from the last 40-42 years.
This illustrates just why Mr. McCartney needs an Album like we're discussing. An Album like Leftovers and Rarities (or whatever you would call it) would contain many songs from the 70's, 80's. 90's, and since the 2000's began that are virtually unknown. The best way to get some "new" publicity on older sons is to release a new album spotlighting "Lost" gems that should be far better known today. Perhaps no famous Musical Artist has more unknown gems than Paul McCartney. -
@b-j-conlee How about adding the 2006 song Paul did with George Michael: Heal The Pain?
I bought a CD in Liverpool at Beatleweek for £5 that is a double CD of GM’s hits that includes that song.

Great reply and comment Yankeefan. I definitely hear what you're saying. I agree that this type of album would not be a money-maker. As you point it, the demographics alone are not in Paul's favor. Perhaps Paul should consider it for his legacy and reputation only. Forget about the profit potential. He should focus on his artistry as a songwriter. Think about how many of his unknown songs might get resurrected. Even if it 30 to 50 %, would it not be worth losing a little bit on the front end. Just a thought. -
@njr
Great thought Nancy and "Heal the Pain" might be a very good possible addition, George Michael was so talented. -

Just a thought.Yeah, it’s not like he needs the money! The songs are all readily available to put together on a CD and then just create the cover and lyrics booklet. Sell it as a non-profit or give the money to charity as a tax write-off!

Some nice possible additions or swap-outs to the 22 Track Starter CD:
- A Friend Like You - A rare Brian Wilson/McCartney Duet
- Heal the Pain - A George Michael/Paul McCartney Duet
- India - From Paul and Band...The Secret Internet Show circa 2002
- Celebration- From the same Show above...Paul's beautiful melody taken from one of his Classical Albums
- Whole Life - Dave Stewart/Paul McCartney Collaboration. Best Version is on the Nelson Mandela Tribute Album...46664, One Year After
- Cut Me Some Slack - Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters; great rocker
- I Want to Go Home - From he Everybody's Fine Soundtrack; One of Paul's best late Period Ballads
- In the Blink of an Eye - From the Ethel and Ernest Soundtrack; another great Ballad
- My Soul- Paul's collaboration with Nitin Sawhney and on the London Underground Album
- Mull of Kintyre - Paul performed this great song multiple times in Great Britain and Canada; Pick the Best "Live" Version
- Simple As That- song from the Pipes of Peace Sessions and on the It's A Live In World Charity Album
- Vanilla Sky- the Soundtrack Album Paul wrote for the Movie; best version is on the Soundtrack Album in my opinion.
- I Don't Know- Live Version from the Soundcheck in Glasgow
- Wanderlust- Great version is on Paul's "Broad Street" Soundtrack with a little snippet of Here There and Everywhere at the end
- Only Love Remains- Rare and Live Version where Paul performs the song on the "Tube Show"
- Summer of 59 - B-Side to Jenny Wren
Sorry, I got a little carried away. Personally I wouldn't mind if Paul released a 2 CD Package. He's got plenty of Rare songs that doesn't duplicate any previous albums.

@b-j-conlee NO! YOU get carried away?!

Some additional notes on my 22 Track Starter CD for a proposed new 2023 album. I like the title "Leftovers and Rarities"- My Old Friend- Carl Perkins originally wrote this song as a gift to Paul and Linda while he was staying on the Island of Montserrat for the beginning of the Tug of War sessions. Paul loved the song so much he convinced Carl to stay a little longer and they did finishing touches to "My Old Friend" together in George Martin's studio.
- Goodbye- A hit for Mary Hopkin. I love Paul's acoustic demo version.
- A Love for You - Originally written during the "Ram" sessions. Paul re-recorded around 2003 for the In-Laws Movie. I like the In-Laws Soundtrack version the best.
- The Mess - I like the "Live" version the best.
- Sally G - B-side to Junior's Farm. I love this "country style" story song.
- Maybe I'm Amazed- Live version from Wings Over America. While American Radio normally plays the "Studio" version the most, I also love the Rockshow/Wings over America album version as well when Paul could really sing.
- Rainclouds- B-Side to the Ebony and Ivory Single. Paul got the late, great Paddy Maloney (the Chieftains) to play the Uilleanns Pipes for this lost classic.
- Loveliest Thing- Paul got together with Phil Ramone (Billy Joel) for this great Ballad. Should have been on the original Flowers in the Dirt Album.
- Flying to My Home- Another great B-Side that should have been on the original Flowers in the Dirt Album. Great Rocker
- Back on My Feet- B-Side to Once Upon a Long Ago Single. I like Paul's simple Piano Version the best.
- Once Upon a Long Ago - While this was a hit in Great Britain, it was never released in the US. Pretty much unknown in America.
- I Can't Imagine- Should have been included on the original "Off the Ground" album.
- No Other Baby- Released as a "Single" for the Run Devil Run album but I think the "Live" version at the Cavern Club (December 1999) is the Definitive version.
- The Lovers that Never Were- Paul and Elvis Costello Demo version is far better than the "Off the Ground" studio version. Paul's vocals are fabulous.

Thank you so much Wandy for putting up the video of Carl and Paul singing "My Old Friend". As I said, there's a great story behind all of these songs. -

Hey Wandy:
After watching the video a couple of times, I don't believe I've seen this exact one before (at least this angle). It might have been film taken from George Martin's studio. You can hear and see the additional guitar parts that Paul added. You can also hear the back-up vocals by Paul more clearly especially in the 2nd half of the song. Brilliant in my opinion. These are the backdrop stories that so many of these songs have . And just think how many of these songs are "unknown" to even avid fans.

Yes agreed! I have seen it before, that's how I knew it existed, to post it here. In fact I download it ages ago, on to a USB stick for my Beatles collection, that I have been amassing for decades.
