Email from Mark Lapidos, creator/promoter of The Fest For Beatles Fans (formerly known as Beatlefest)

      Tuesday, February 7, 1964
I awakened this morning, fully aware of the historical significance of this day in music/world history. It was not surprising to me to see networks this morning marking this historic date, with stock footage from JFK. A true musical/cultural shift occurred 59 years ago today, as The Beatles landed at the newly renamed JFK Airport in NYC. It took only 43 days from the day I Want To Hold Your Hand was released here (12/26/63) until their arrival here ahead of their upcoming first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show two days later. In those 43 days, Beatlemania exploded mostly upon the youth of America. It was fairly rare when an artist had two songs on the charts at the same time (the exceptions were usually the first hit was going down the charts while a new hit was rising!). Well, this new British band with the seemingly strange name not just had two songs on top 40 radio at the same time, they completely turn the music world upside down here! By the time they arrived, they already had the top 2 songs, 2 more in the top 25 and 4 more 'hot prospects'.

Immediately following their Ed Sullivan Show appearance in front of 728 fans in the audience and another 73 Million watching on their televisions. they had 4 songs in the top twenty and two ALBUM cuts (this never happened on AM radio!) Almost every other song played on top 40 radio around the country now, was by The Beatles. It seemed The Beatles were at the top of every conversation at school the next day. EVERYBODY saw them!! We couldn't get enough of them. As a generation, we bought up every guitar in every music store and started to play guitar (drums, too!) so we could sing their songs with friends. Many went on to become some of the biggest rock stars of the era. Almost every rock star credits The Beatles as their direct reason they started playing music and many even learning to write their own songs, too! So if you are a baby boomer, take a few moments to think back where you were that weekend and how seeing them live on our TV screens changed your lives. I know it changed mine!!

If you want to share some of your own memories, I would love to hear from you.

Peace and Love Yeah Yeah Yeah,
      Mark

It was 59 years ago today Buddy Holly taught the band to play. Yes I know Buddy Holly never taught the Beatles to ACTUALLY play. But of course, John got the name "Beatles" by accident from Buddy Holly.

            Q. Why do hairdressers get to their destination before everybody else.
            A. They know short cuts.

Yes, but that was 63 years ago John & Stu came up with Beetles/Beatles after the Crickets. 😉

Were there any other "insect" bands in the 50s/60s? Or are Crickets and Beatles the only ones?

Not sure. But in the 80s we had Adam ANT. And the 70s had David Bowie & The SPIDERS From Mars. Just remembered The BEE Gees, 60s, 70s, and 80s.

There's a whole world of possible names for new bands: "praying mantis" "termites" "The Mosquitos" -- in fact, "Insects" would be a good name for a punk band!

It's not the input( of the bees) it's just the insect name. In fact if bees tried to influence My band, I would tell them to BUZZ off. I can't think of a single song by the Bee Gees that I don't like. Not one.

59 years -- let's put this in perspective: 59 years before 1964 was 1905. How many musical artists from 1905 were still listened to in 1964? And yet here were are in 2023 with millions still listening to the Beatles.

WOW! That really does put it in perspective! The only major composers that are still played (by orchestras) today are classical composers like Beethoven, Bach, etc. or then there are Rodgers & Hammerstein (1940s & 1950s “golden age” of musical theater)
                                      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodgers_and_Hammerstein
I’m sure there are other examples, but it’s not like anybody is playing these singers from 1905! 😂
