Ringo And All-Starr Band - 2017 Tour
-
Well that is very dissapointing. I wonder why he would drop it. Perhaps Ringo decided there were too many songs about Love in the show. That would be in line with his no "Octopus's Garden" logic because then there would be two songs about water. (For those not familiar this was a reason he gave many years ago as to why both Octopus and Yellow Sub could not both be in the All Starr show)

Really a shame in that "On The Road Again" would be a great opener!

On Friday Nov 10, 2017 Ringo and the All-Starrs performed at a private charity show in Clearwater Florida for music education. http//www.tampabay.com/blogs/soundcheck/2017/11/11/ringo-starr-famous-friends-pop-into-clearwater-for-arts-education-benefit/ Photos only http//www.tampabay.com/photos/2017/11/11/ringo-starr-friends-of-music-private-concert-in-clearwater/

This is easily Ringo's worst setlist of his career.

Saw the Morristown NJ show last night. Nothing from "Give More Love" but, jumping jacks, What's my name? and Hare Krishna are all still part of the show. My 4th time seeing this incarnation of the All Starrs, nothing against the guys but it is definitely time to change things up again.

Philip Selway, Radiohead's drummer, was a surprise guest at the end of the Beacon Theatre show last night:
. Really good show as always, but, as discussed, nothing else new this time around. -
Glad I didn't spring for the Norfolk show. I've seen this band three times...2012, 2014, and 2015. The last being the best by far, with fifth row seats and a shoutout from Ringo from the stage. Unless he comes back to Baltimore, I'm not making more than a fifteen minute trek to see this show a fourth time. I'm sorry, but Mr. Mister sucks. I've heard Broken Wings FOUR times. I can't take a fifth. It's time to shake things up, and rotate a few of Ringo's songs around...not much. I'd love to hear "The No-No Song" come back as I've never heard it live. He's gotta do "Octopus's Garden" one of these days too. Oh well...

I have seen the All-Starrs in every configuration, and the only time I have personally ever seen Ringo do "Octopus's Garden" was at the show he did with the Roundheads that came out on DVD back in 2007. For some reason, he never performs it with the All-Starrs.

He's said that it's too similar to "Yellow Submarine" in terms of subject matter. He needs to get over it. That's a cop out. Ya know what's too similar in subject matter? Having dozens of songs with the same exact chords and forgettable lyrics...and that's coming from a Ringo defender. "Give More Love" is "Never Without You", in case no one else has noticed. Sure, the melodic phrasing is slightly different...but it is form fitting. You could remove the vocal from one and add it to the other, no questions asked. Just one recent example...

Thinking about shaking up the lineup though...who are some folks you'd like to see in the band? Having The Beach Boys firmly settled as my #2 band of all time, I always thought Al Jardine would make a good fit on Rhythm Guitar. He could sing "Help Me Rhonda" since he had the original lead, "California Saga" or "Cotton Fields", and "Sloop John B" since that was his baby worked up by Brian Wilson. Nancy Wilson from Heart would be a good fit too, seeing as they're pretty well defunct at this time. She sang enough of their leads to fill two to there slots and would be a kickass lead guitarist. And returning, I feel like there's a lot of members that could've had a second go-round...Roger Hodgson, Felix Cavaliere, Burton Cummings, Mark Farner...just to name a few.

A fantasy All Starr band of mine has always included Al Jardine (great minds think alike
) and Micky Dolenz It's perfect for my taste Beatles/Beach Boys/Monkees I have pitched this idea to both Micky and Al over the years and they love the idea but just need Ringo to make the phone call
After those three I could choose from a number of different people but the top of my list (after the three already mentioned) would be Susanna Hoffs she would rock as an All Starr.

I'm going to pose a different argument, one in favor of the current lineup, but with some modifications. I'll admit some bias since this is the first ASB lineup in my attending time in which each member performs at least one song, in some cases multiple, that were already big faves of mine from way back, so I've enjoyed this group a lot from the beginning. Still, I understand the complaints about redundancy and, much like the same arguments regarding Paul's shows, I agree it would be a big boost to have more novelty and variation. However, I see this current lineup as being a lot like Paul's current band in that they seem to have great chemistry and a lot of fun together, which makes the show a lot of fun for everyone else. I love all the little antics they've created during this set, with a lot of cute coordinated choreography and other rehearsed and spontaneous interactions between each other and the crowd, plus they play really tightly. Those are qualities that emerge after a long time playing the same songs together, which I think are underrated when evaluating performances and overlooked with the emphasis on setlists. It's the same thing for Paul's band. I think at this point Ringo, much like Paul, likes having stability in his performances. It's nice to have a group of people you know you can rely on instead of dealing with the drama of shifting lineups and unexpected interpersonal dynamics over the course of a tour, as both have. I've said it before, but I enjoy these shows most when P and/or R are having fun themselves and it turns into a kind of party with us and them. I love that they both have found a group that seems to make *them* happy. That said, while I was watching Philip Selway with Ringo the other night, I was thinking about how Ringo's albums are always kind of a display of how beloved he is by just about everyone in the industry and how pretty much everyone is happy to work with him in any form. The original concept of the All Starr Band was playing on the same notions -- a chance for us to enjoy Ringo hanging out with his very diverse group of talented and accomplished friends and letting them share the spotlight and pad the repertoire. That formula worked very well, but since there are also pros for having a fixed band, perhaps that same effect could be achieved by just having more guest appearances. I'm sure there would be tons of artists, not all ASB candidates, who would be thrilled to drop in for a song or two like Phil did the other night. For others, joining the tour for a brief stint might be an option, and the band could work in one of that artist's songs. There are probably many ASB candidates for whom the commitment of a full tour wouldn't have worked from either side, and I'm sure they'd love the shot and we'd love to see them! I know that goes for me with a lot of the names suggested upthread. If that became a new formula, I'm sure the current band members wouldn't mind giving up a song or two each to make room for guests. I think having frequent guest artists might provide the main benefits that the revolving ASB lineup achieved, including getting to see a bunch of varied artists perform with Ringo, the "surprise" factor, and the setlist diversity, while still allowing them to retain the chemistry and consistency that seems to have clicked with the current lineup. Who knows though, maybe some of the current band members will decide to move on and replacements will be needed anyway. [P.S. no surprises at the Newark NJPAC show either, but still a lot of fun, and I heard the band really liked the crowd and venue.]

I agree that Ringo likes the stability. I think he is at a point where he just wants to go out for 1-2 months a year while he still can, and keeping the same lineup makes that much easier than bringing in new people every time and basically starting over. My reasons for wanting him to change it up are purely selfish, I am bored with these All Starrs, however I will continue to go see Ringo as long as he keeps coming around. It's not every day you can say you are going to see one of The Beatles

At this rate, I don't see Ringo changing the lineup anytime soon... But if he did, I'd like to see Mark Farner and Edgar Winter return. One of the best guitarists in the band, and certainly the best keyboard player I've seen in the All Starrs. I say keep Luke and Richard Page, those two work well together, especially with Ringo. As much as I like Todd Rundgren and Gregg Rolie, I'd be totally fine if they were replaced. As for Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette, I'd be content with them sticking around. I'd certainly hate to see Gregg leave. He works great with Ringo.

I want to echo this, Gregg is great and I also would really hate to see him leave. So when I say I would like a shakeup that does not include Gregg.

Agree with all of the above! I think this band has become very comfortable with each other and they all seem to be happy to put their solo work aside to join Ringo for another tour when he wants to go out. I'm very happy that he's continuing to tour and I will also continue to see him as long as he is doing so. He did tweet "peace and love everybody see you next year it was so great" after the last night of the tour this week, so he may be planning another tour for 2018?
