Your 10 Favorite John Songs
-
Not best -- there are way more than 10 that easily qualify, so let's say up-front this is highly subjective: 10 John Lennon songs from any era that you can't imagine living without. Here's mine, in roughly chronological order:
-
Norwegian Wood
-
In My Life
-
And Your Bird Can Sing
-
Across the Universe
-
The Ballad of John and Yoko
-
Instant Karma
-
God
-
Imagine
-
Gimme Some Truth.
-
Grow Old With Me
-
-
@bruce-m In no particular order:
Instant Karma (this actually is my favorite solo song of his)
In My Life
If I Fell (he wrote it even though Paul ends up singing the melody)
Imagine (what is it with all the songs starting with the letter “I?”)
Woman
Girl
Hey Bulldog
Revolution (fast version)
Strawberry Fields Forever
You’ve Got To Hide Your Love AwayThat’s 10, but I could easily name another 10!
Bruce, I purposely didn’t look at your list or I would have added And Your Bird Can Sing instead of Girl - it is one of my faves! -

I'm not sure that And Your Bird Can Sing is "better" than Strawberry Fields Forever, which isn't on my list, but something about those clanging guitars and John's teetering-0n-the-edge-of-madness vocal just does it for me. It's highly, highly subjective. Some songs just make me want to crank up the volume and annoy the neighbors.

Favorite John songs:
- Mind Games
- Give Peace a Chance
- Grow Old Along with Me
- Imagine
- Every Little Thing
- You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
- I am the Walrus
- I read the news today
- Instant Karma
- Beautiful Boy
Not a fan at all of the songs he wrote when he and the other Beatles were angry at Paul, like "Jealous Guy" and "How do you sleep"... my least favorite songs of his as a matter of fact. I think it's because of the negative vibes in the lyrics.
John could have recorded an angry song or two to get it out of his system and decided not to release them. It would have been like writing an angry letter to someone, just to help yourself feel better, without the thought of actually mailing it. Unfortunately he decided to release the songs making things worse temporarily. But Paul has said that they were eventually able to patch things up and that he was glad things were better between them before John left us.

@Bruce-M ROTFLMAO!
-
@LadyLeslie #8 is A Day In The Life which is only half John’s. I wouldn’t call it a “John” song. Jmho
-
@NJR The half that John wrote is A Day in the Life, but Paul wrote it's prelude... "Woke up, got outta bed, dragged a comb across my head." The half that he wrote is worthy of it's own song I think "I read the news today oh boy..."

So you only like John’s part of the song? jk
Paul wrote not the prelude, which would be first, but something like the “middle eight” or whatever you call it. -
@NJR No, I love Paul's part of that song... Can identify with it and have sung it many times when I've almost been late for work!!

As much a Paul fan as I am, I've always loved How Do You Sleep? Pissed off John is entertaining as hell.
