New statues of the Beatles have been unveiled on Liverpool?s Pier Head . John Lennon ?s sister Julia Baird and Liverpool deputy mayor Cllr Ann O?Byrne officially unveiled the statues which were donated to the city by the Cavern Club , and coincides with the 50th anniversary tomorrow of the Beatles? last concert in their home city when they played at the Liverpool Empire . Julia Baird said: ?It?s a great honour to unveil this statue. We?ve got statues and bronzes of people all along this waterfront who have brought their skills, their labour and their love to Liverpool and helped it grow." ?It?s very apt that the Beatles are here. What have they done for Liverpool? What haven?t they done for Liverpool?!? she added. ?I know John would have loved it. And I bet Paul comes to see it as soon as he comes back here.? The statues ,which weigh in at 1.2 tonnes, was sculpted by Andrew Edwards, who also created the All Together Now Christmas Truce WWI statue currently on show in St George?s Hall, and cast at Castle Fine Art Foundry Ltd. The idea came from foundry managing director Chris Butler, who was inspired when walking through Liverpool ONE and saw the huge image of the band outside HMV. Andrew said today: ?I feel glad for the people of Liverpool. It?s they who demanded this statue ? it?s not like we pushed. They pulled, and we just channelled that.? Those look great!! And in such a good spot too It may be a sign of my gloomy mood though that i pictured one day there will be flowers all round the Paul one... maybe i'm just thinking of how when George died there were flowers left all round the (bad) statue in cavern walks.. I hope it's about 20 years til any flowers get placed round the new one!!

These statues are an amazing tribute to the world's most famous rock music advancing band. Paul and Ringo are very proud, I know (also John and George, visiting in spirit). And their families must be shedding proud happy tears. And many, many fans Another Christmas miracle to gladden the heart.

The statues are very large indeed - about six foot tall. I saw them at Beatleweek last August in The Adelphi Hotel during the Convention and they were very impressive.

Lord, how short is Julia then? They look more like 7 feet tall!

^ i think it's great the statues are bigger than life, at 8 foot tall it means when people crowd around them at big events etc you will still be able to see their heads above the crowd.

Those statues are so cool. To me they are exact likeness of each Beatle, from what I can see.

Just read today that the sculptor added two acorns gathered from near the Dakota into John's right hand: http://www.liverpoolconfidential.co.uk/culture/beatles-statue-unveiled-on-liverpool-waterfront
