It was a good show. Paul was in good form for a 75 year old. Yeah, he sounded a little croaky but that was to be expected. No surprises in the setlist but the show was solid. The crowd was really into it. I was sitting next to a 20-year old kid who had never seen a McCartney show and he was blown away. Also several friends of mine from college came into town to see McCartney for the first time and they really loved it.

I just hope he's in good voice for the album.

RE: New McCartney song on film soundtrack
The song is now available for download on iTunes in the US, however the catch is it is an "album only" track...you have to buy the *entire* album just to have the damn song. No thanks...

RE: Is Turned Out actually the best upbeat song on New?
toris:
This song and "I Can Bet" very infectious. Two of my faves from that session. Should've been on the album proper.
Agreed. Those were my two favorite songs off the album. Examples of McCartney putting out effortless material when he isn't trying so hard. Liked these songs much better than the clunky "Queenie Eye", the tuneless "Everybody Out There" and the forgettable "Save Us".

RE: New McCartney song on film soundtrack
A nice production and arrangement but overall the song is not very memorable and as repeatedly mentioned, McCartney's voice is quite unpolished.

RE: Fresno, CA - Save Mart Center - April 13th - ARCHIVE
McCartney has performed a good variety of material in the last 15+ years. He's thrown in rarities like "Too Many People", "Ram On", "Temporary Secretary" and "Nineteen-Hundred & Eighty-Five". I always welcome him playing different songs but am not complaining over all the ground he has already covered.

Won't be long now 'till curiousity about the set list of this concert is resolved. All will be revealed But there's no doubt the show will be a joy divine
It will be the standard setlist with a couple of changes at most. I truly doubt changes will be something to get really excited about IMO. Actually, I will be more interested in how good his voice is at this show.
______________________________________________________ Yankeefan,i Couldn't agree with you more. If Paul was serious about significant additions/changes he would have been spending a good amount of time with his Band over the last month or two and I have heard nothing about that. I know that he doesn't believe in over practicing but I still believe that significant changes would require time and a strong commitment. That being said, I will be thrilled if he has 3 or 4 additions and hopefully from the Solo side. After all, he does have "Pure McCartney" being released in June. Like you, I'm more concerned that his voice is in relatively good shape. PS. This morning I see that Macca has just announced the Philadelphia show at Citizen's Bank Park. Not too far from you and it is a beautiful park. Might not be a bad idea for you to consider! I am snow birding between Florida and New Jersey (southern part) and will already be heading North so I am definitely planning on being there.
BJ - I would rather go to Citizen's Bank Park to see Phillie baseball game now than McCartney concert. I said several years ago I was done with spending money on his concerts unless his setlist had major change which included songs I have mentioned to you and others over the years. The last time I saw him was 2010 in Charlotte NC and the only reason I went again was my daughters wanted to see him and I wanted to share that experience with them.It was literally a 15 minute drive from my house and we got the "cheap" seats. To be honest, I look forward to hearing about him recording new music more than hearing about his never ending touring. I truly hope he does make some decent changes because if he plays Metlife Stadium and does the same old show the NY media will rip into him.
Yankeefan, I understand your feelings exactly. I might not attend myself after tonight if I see the same old, same old with little to no change If I do end up going , it would strictly be for sentimental reasons. Except for the last show 2014, My sister and I have gone to all of Paul's Philly shows since the Flowers in the Dirt tour (1989 tour I believe). We only missed the last show (2014) because of our Father's illness and being with him in Florida. She might really want me to go with her this year since we did miss that last show and at almost 74, it might be his last one ever in Philly. My sister is more of a casual fan so it is more about us going together than the setlist. I'm more like you...a diehard Macca fan that loves so many of his Post Beatles songs and frankly getting tired of the same Beatle songs. The fact of the matter is that the 2014 show offered very little to the real fans since Paul was going back to the same Beatle songs that we have already heard (besides the 8-10 signature songs he always does) The last show I did attend was in 2011 and I loved that show because he did have healthy changes to the setlist from 2005. They primarily included songs from Wings and the Beatles I had never seen before (1985, Letting Go, Rock Show, Two of Us, I've Just Seen a Face, I'm Looking Through You, And I Love Her plus a couple more I don't remember). Same thing with the show before 2011. Think it was the Chaos tour. Again, a bunch of songs on that tour I had never heard live before. As we know, he now is at the point where he is scraping the bottom of the barrel. I will see what tonight's setlist brings. I'm not hopeful as I said. We have gone over this time and time, but the "numbers" people who control Paul (or even Paul himself) have committed to doing the Beatle songs and big hit Wings songs that will appeal to the casual fans (boomers and their own kids basically). In their mind, that is what is needed to keep the stadiums and or arenas filled.
BJ - He can play his mostly Beatle/Wings set but just give somebody like me 7-8 songs that he has never played from his solo career and I would love to attend a show. See below for example. 1) Take It Away 2) Little Willow 3) Promise To You Girl 4) Dance Til We're High 5) That Was Me 6) Early Days 7) Dear Boy About You or Magic
He's played "That Was Me" live before. There are two different live recordings that were both floating around iTunes at one point.

It would be nice to see artists boycotting cities where police are murdering unarmed citizens and getting away with it.
Seconded. Chicago would never have another concert again.

RE: Atlanta, GA, Philips Arena, June 21st-RESCHEDULED 10/15
Fourth time I've seen him. His voice wasn't as strong as it usually is but I presumed the flight delay and rush to soundcheck probably contributed to this. Still, the old man's still got it. Great time. Played the usual set list that included both "Get Back" and "Hi Hi Hi".

This is just my opinion, but hearing "Early Days" on the CD makes me cringe every time. I love the lyrics, they are beautiful, but the vocals just make me sad.
Seems no one shares your opinion. Myself included. It's been my favorite track on the album since day 1 and still is. His vocals are on point for the mood of the song.
Ok I'll jump in. I can't really get into this song either. It just doesn't grab my attention very well. Paul's voice does sound a little worn for wear on it, which I'll admit suits the song well enough, but I can understand why some wouldn't like it.

PaulMcCartneyFan1 had it right. How surprising would it have been if they played "Put It There". Not putting down Macca's shows in the least. Paul and "my band" put on an amazing show and give all the fans their money's worth for sure. I just wished (especially for the true, hard core fans who attend at least one show on every tour) that they would have a little more sponaneity and a little surprise from show to show. It wouldn't take much for Paul and his team to look at the dates of each new tour and come up with a total one song surprise. For example, if it was Paul's Dad's birthday, Put it There would have been such a perfect song since it was his Dad's expression and was the song's inspiration. To do a 30 second snipit of Yellow Submarine for Ringo's birthday is hardly stunning for the hard core fan. At the beginning of each tour they could have these types of surprises up their sleeve. Put It There is a simpe but great little song. Before the tour have Rusty brush up on playing the song on his guitar and just have Paul sing it. Doesn't seem to be that difficult. And it doesn't have to be executed perfectly. It is the surprise that would matter the most. Whatever that one song surprise would be (like On My Way to Work in Albany), it would be one of the things talked about all over the press the following day. Again, I'm not criticizing the shows (I'm going to Jacksonville in October) but it is just an idea to make a concert even more exciting for the "real" fans.
It amuses me to hear fans complain that McCartney isn't shaking things up enough in his setlist. Sure he has songs he always performs during every tour, but every since he formed his currently touring band, he has covered a lot of ground in his repertoire. Paul has been routinely moving things around in his setlist from show to show and tour to tour. And he does occasionally toss in a surprise song at certain venues. I always welcome surprises but overall have been happy with the changes he makes during each tour. And no, the press is not going to go ballistic over Paul adding a forgotten gem like "Put It There" into the setlist.

Would not be surprised if "Getting Better" made a return to the set list.

I totally agree with you. I don't know why people get bashed for asking about Paul's health & if the show will go on. : If I had tickets for this 1st show in Lubbock...maybe soundcheck tickets...maybe for the whole family & then on top of that airline tickets & hotel tickets & time off work...Yes I'd be wondering too.
So far nothing suggests he's cancelling any further shows. Until they give us a reason to worry about it, don't.
Looks like I spoke too soon.

sorry, his spokesperson said he will make a complete recovery. We got an update, we seen him walking around London. Its great to see him out and about
Most people here didn't believe what the spokesperson said, anyway, so I don't really see what an update would achieve. Really, if people don't believe the evidence of their own eyes then I don't know what they will believe.
Sounds like he's doing a lot better and has not yet canceled any shows for June. What other update do we need? Should we start inquiring what he's had for breakfast?

Easily one of my least-favorite songs of his. I don't have any interest in hearing him perform it.

RE: Paul - GRAMMY 2013

Awesoman:
But let's be honest here: with all due respect, I think you're simply looking at this from a personal preference perspective whereas I'm looking at it from an objective perspective.
I'm not sure you could be more patronizing. Yes, "your" approach is "objective."
I'm pretty sure I could be more patronizing, human. (Yes, I'm kidding.) And yes, I am looking at this objectively. Both albums are great and have their individual strengths. But if I were asked which one was more ambitious and complex an album, that would be SMiLE, eight days a week.
-
RE: Paul - GRAMMY 2013
Michelley:
Bruce M.:
Smile is light-years better than Ram. Really glad KOTB won though -- that was thoroughly deserved.
Well I agree with you on the second sentence. But you're absolutely wrong on the first. Seriously, I don't understand how anyone who appreciates Smile could not also appreciate Ram. Both albums are in the same creative vein.
I appreciate RAM just fine. But I take it that you've never really listened to SMiLE before, if at all, if you truly think both albums are in the same creative vein. They are *completely* different albums with a completely different approach. With RAM, McCartney attempted to re-invent himself with a "homegrown", earthy, laid-back approach. It definitely is underrated (critics initially hated it but have warmed up to it in recent decades) and it's one of his best solo albums; but it's not exactly ground-breaking the way SMiLE was. And it doesn't quite reach the level he was on with the Beatles. SMiLE was a completely different beast. It was huge in scope; taking the production values of Pet Sounds to the next level. "Good Vibrations" (dubbed "the pocket symphony") alone is a majestic pop masterpiece in terms of production and songwriting. Hell, that song alone took more than several different studios to record it all! The album is more like a symphony; complete with several different movements.
Michelley:
And it was Pet Sounds that people said was the height of songwriting (and it should be noted that Brian Wilson didn't write any of the lyrics on either album, they were written by several lyricists).
Yes, Brian Wilson usually collaborated with others on lyrics. With Pet Sounds, he worked with Tony Asher. In Asher's own words, "The general tenor of the lyrics was often [Brian's], however the actual choice of words was usually mine. I was really just his interpreter." But seriously, who the hell cares whether or not Brian Wilson was writing his own lyrics? What, was his arranging of layers and layers of instrument and vocal parts, crafting complex melodies and his mastering of production techniques not impressive enough? Seriously, if you truly believe Wilson was somehow "slacking" because he didn't write all the lyrics on his albums, you really aren't getting the big picture here.
Michelley:
Is Smile better than Ram? I don't know: Is chocolate ice cream better than chocolate chip? That's just a personal choice. They're both genius albums. I do think Brian Wilson deserved the Grammy -- believe it or not, I read that he's only won TWO in his life. So it was nice to see him honored. But he was awarded that Grammy as much for sentimental reasons as for the music. Ram would have deserved that Grammy, too -- not saying that Ram is better than Smile. Just that it was equally deserving.
I get where you're coming from. I agree with you that RAM was deserving of more critical acclaim than it initially received. Yes, McCartney was on the receiving end from many a critic's wrath after the Beatles split; a position that he never fully rebounded from. But let's be honest here: with all due respect, I think you're simply looking at this from a personal preference perspective whereas I'm looking at it from an objective perspective. I love both the Beatles and the Beach Boys about the same. I believe both Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson are musical geniuses. So I have no beef with someone preferring RAM over SMiLE. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Where I find fault with your argument is trying to suggest that both RAM and SMiLE are somehow on equal footing in terms of scope. This is simply an unfair and downright ridiculous comparison. With RAM, McCartney was thinking "small" and scaled back (in terms of approach, not quality) whereas with SMiLE, Brian Wilson was thinking "grand" and immaculate.
