If for nothing else, the setlist could change for Paul and the bands sake.I'm sure they would love to play a lot of different songs rather than the 5oth version of Band On The Run.Just look at the reaction to Mrs Vandebilt from the band, they look overjoyed to be playing something fresh, and so does Paul. Another thing is real fans try and have some objectivity towards their favourite artist rather than blindly agreeing with everything they do.I love Paul as much as anyone and have done for 35 years, but he hasn't rested on his laurels as a recording artist so why do it as alive act?

I can understand Paul playing a lot of Beatle songs at the big one off shows in these unique environments, but i think once he hits the UK or US he can be braver.Paul keeps trotting out the line about playing hits,if this was the case he'd play Mull Of Kintyre in the UK as it's his bestselling single ever, including any Beatle single. As been said by myself and Left Hand Man,there are plenty of Wings hits that have not seen the light of day for 30 years or longer, and mostly top ten too. Please tell me is Follow The Sun better than Listen To What The Man Said,Helen Wheels,Junior's Farm and Hi Hi Hi,clearly it is not,it's a trifle in Paul's oeuvre'.I'm not saying throw out the Beatles stuff just a better balanced set, and avoid what he managed to get away from in the '70's a "nostalgia act".I know it's tough to get away from being seen as a oldies act when you have had a 46 year career, but playing so many Beatle songs gives the impression that your post group phase was a complete waste of time, which it hasn't been.

I think recording wise Paul has never lived in the past, but live it's not the case.Fans loved Wings shows in the '70's despite hardly any Beatle songs in the setlist.I think if he played songs right across his vast career i don't think people would be disappointed,as long as generally the songs are known there won't be a problem.

Left Hand Man, i agree with you that the Chaos and MAF songs sound great live, but as you and i have said before most fans that go to Paul's gigs now seem to want Beatle songs.I'd love a better balanced setlist across his career, but it's not likely.

Hi Suzy,i have seen Paul 6 times and the only time i have seen people less enthusiastic for a song tends to be a brand new song.Over the last 20 years Paul's albums haven't sold like they did in the '70's and early '80's,so the audience are generally unfamiliar with anything past '83.So if Paul tours a album the songs from that album go down poorly compared to the "oldies".

The setlist debate is one that is never going to please everyone. But i'm with yankeefan7,Paul has a great back catalogue post 1969 to the present day.I do believe that there are a quite a lot of Wings songs that he could play that fans do know, apart from Band,Jet,Live And Let Die and My Love.Fans might not have heard the lesser known Wings hits for awhile but once they are played i'm sure they'll be swept along. Most have not been aired for years,Listen To What The Man Said,Junior's Farm,Helen Wheels,Hi Hi Hi,Silly Love Songs,With A Little Luck were all major hits, plus a lot of the album tracks are known from the Wings days. When Wings toured they hardly played any Beatle songs, so it wouldn't be a drastic thing if just a few extra non Beatle songs were played.

I love The Who,but Pete Towshend saying Paul is resting on his laurels is a bit rich.Apart from the last Who tour, which i went to see and loved,The Who were playing the same old songs for decades.I don't think recording wise Paul or Pete having been resting on their laurels,if Pete's quote is correct.I did read he thought Paul and Elton and the like had put out too many albums over the years.I do think he had a fair point, albums like Pipes Of Peace and Off The Ground have sullied Paul's reputation a bit.Thank god over the last 10 years Paul's albums have been a lot stronger.

I have to disagree with you Kestrel about Paul performing the songs less well as the time has passed.I have seen every tour since '79,and the best show i have been too,was the 2003 gig at Earls Court in London, with the current band.Apart from the '79 Wings UK tour, Paul's vocals were stronger in 2003 than in '89 and '93.The setlist was the best i had seen too.It included some favourites of mine, songs like Birthday,Two Of Us,She's Leaving Home,I've Just Seen A Face and Getting Better, songs that were not played live very often,if at all.

RE: Paul, Come To Australia
I do hope you are right CharlieD,as i posted yesterday, i think Australia deserve Paul to tour OZ properly, with no Beatles songs in the setlist .Just pulling your leg. Stevie Wonder is touring here in the UK soon, but time and money are at a premium. I did get to see Crowded House on the 10th July in a little woodland forest area, and they were great. The crowd on the other hand, were talking and shuffling about far too much, which as you can imagine, was very annoying. Having seen Paul outside in Lisbon in 2004,where the crowd were brilliant, it was very frustrating that a audience were so restless and rude.

RE: Paul, Come To Australia
I think if Paul is to tour Oz he should do a extensive one. After the '02 abort, which i thought was a error on his part,he should give the aussie fans a proper tour,as a apology for the '02 cancellation.Living here in England,i thought the reason for the cancellation of the last Australian tour was a poor one,i think after the atrocity, the aussies needed a positive and uplifting event, not unlike post 9/11,and a Paul tour would have fitted the bill. You can't let the criminals win.Paul's tour was a cathartic experience for the US after 9/11,and a positive thing overall.

RE: Paul, Come To Australia
If you went on Paul's current sales of his albums across the globe,he would not tour anywhere.Generally, his selling power has fallen away in the last 25 years. The corralation between sales and touring, is not really representative of a artists ticket selling power. The sad fact is most go to see Paul as a Beatle, not as a solo act.

RE: What Concerts are you going to this year?
I'm off to see Crowded House on the 10th July for the second time in 7 months. The gig at Wembley in December was one of the best shows i have ever been too.The concert in Thetford forest has a lot to live up too. Neil Finn is a songwriting genius,up there with Paul.He is seriously underrated.

To a degree you are right Yankeefan7,the Flowers songs were new to most of the audience, but new songs as a rule don't go down a well as golden oldies.I think refreshing the Beatle and Wings songs is a good proposition. Most fans just want to hear Beatle and Wings songs that haven't been played in awhile. As a Macca fan of 35 years i'd like a balance of the three phases of his career, but generally the majority want Beatle faves. He just needs to mix the oldies up a bit. It would be good for the band to play a varied set.Playing Mrs Vandebilt in Kiev, you saw the joy on the faces of all concerned at playing something fresh.

I am one of the people that is in the change the setlist camp, but as i have said before everyone is entitled to there opinion on the issue.I do think certain fans are pushing there point of view too much.Have your say but don't labour it too much.

Left hand man, it would be great to hear most of those rocking songs at a Paul gig.I still have a soft spot for Spin It On as a rocker, rather than The Mess, which i'm not keen on,but the rest would be cool. As been said before, the core Beatles and Wings songs need refreshing and other great songs need airing.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
Yankeefan7,i do realise that a lot of fans want a more balanced setlist.I would prefer it that way myself. The point i was making, is that it's not been the same songs for twenty years,as some seem to be implying.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
I suppose it's hard not to be selfish regarding Paul's gigs.It is always more of a thrill hearing a song you love for the first time, live, than some you have heard on numerous occasions.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
I saw Paul in the UK in 2003 in London, and the following year in Lisbon,Portugal. If my memory serves me right, there was quite a few setlist changes. The new songs were She's A Woman,You Won't See Me,For No One,In Spite Of All The Danger,Helter Skelter,I Got A Feeling,Get Back,Flaming Pie,Got To Get You Into My Life,Drive My Car and All Things Must Pass and others i have forgotten probably. The 2003 show had a few changes from '93 too.Hello Goodbye,Getting Better,Blackbird,You Never Give Me Your Money,Here Today,Something,Let 'Em In,Birthday,Two Of Us,I've Just Seen A Face,Back In The USSR,Your Loving Flame and She's Leaving Home, a highlight. Having been to the '89/'90 tour also, that differed reasonably set wise from '93. The usual suspects have been there also,so it's time for there semi retirement.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
I saw Paul at two Earls Court shows in '93, but he didn't play Fixing A Hole or Another Day. I think he changed a few songs around when he played the UK ,from his shows in the US.

DennyC i did read someone on here say they would enjoy Paul singing Baa Baa Black Sheep or burp, which is a little silly.I think that's what Lyceum '89 was alluding too. I'm enjoying the selist debate enormously,so many differing views. No wonder it's difficult to please everybody.
