Hey, I haven't been here for a while and it's nice to see you're a Cars fans as well love2travel. I knew Elliott had a side project going with the Empty Hearts. Where did you see them in concert? I also like Move Like This. I'd rank it right up there with Candy-O.

      THE CARS RULE!

      They're a very good band.

I have all of The Cars' albums as well as the greatest hits collections. I've always loved the songs "Just What I Needed," "Good Times Roll," "You're All I've Got Tonight," "Shake It Up," "Since You're Gone," "Drive," "Magic" and "Hello Again" just to name a few.

I have all of them as well *except* for their greatest hits but I do have the Cars Anthology which has all of their hits as well as some rarities, B sides and demos. So what do you think of the Door To Door album? As I said in the original post, a lot of Cars fans seem to either not care for it too much, or they're dismissive of it.

http://www.allmusic.com/album/door-to-door-mw0000192976 Their debut album was very good & Candy-O was a good follow up. I saw them in '81 at Exhibition Stadium; it was ok.

Hey, I was there as well but I saw them in 1980. I wouldn't see them in concert again until 2011 at The Docks in Toronto. The only Cars album I don't really care for is Panorama. I liked the first three songs but the rest don't do much for me. Just my opinion.

You're correct it was 1980. We were sitting 2 rows from the back. They didn't have video monitors in those days. Exhibition Stadium wasn't a very good venue but I saw some big acts there like Bowie, Supertramp, Heart, The Who as well Paul McCartney in '93 which was the last concert I saw there.

Wow, I was probably about 10 rows from the back and I was also at Pauls concert in 1993 and like you, it was also the last concert I saw at that venue. BTW I was checking out some more information online and I literally laughed out loud when I saw the Cars being photobombed. The expressions on Benjamin Orrs and particularly David Robinsons faces are just priceless. Here's the link: http://theconcertdatabase.com/sites/theconcertdatabase.com/files/cars.jpg

    • 30th Anniversary of The Cars Door to Door album

I was reading up on this and the anniversary was actually on August 25th. Hard to believe it's been that long. Door To Door would be the last album to feature all five members of the Cars. They did make another album, Move Like This, back in 2011 but original bassist/singer Benjamin Orr had passed away from pancreatic cancer back in 2000. Door To Door seems to be one of those albums that a lot of Cars fans either don't like very much or they're dismissive of it. Personally, I like the album. It has, hands down, more song variety than any other Cars album. It has a couple of quirky, fun songs like Leave Or Stay and Ta Ta Wayo Wayo, an angsty, edgy song called Double Trouble, a country (!) song, Everything You Say, a couple of what may be called more of the classic style Cars songs, You Are The Girl and Strap Me In and it also has what may be one of the first, if not *the* first "chill out" type song called Fine Line. It's the type of song that makes more sense at 3 A.M. than 3 P.M. If you've heard it you'll know what I mean. There's also Coming Up You which is the type of innocuous nice sounding song that sounds like it could be played in a mall. Funnily enough a few years ago when I was walking through a mall I heard that song. There's a very good song called Go Away sung by Benjamin Orr. It has a dreamy semi-melancholy feel to it and it really should have been a hit single. A ballad called Wound Up On You, which, while not being at the same level as a song like Drive, is still a decent song. The album closer and title song Door To Door can only be described as "hard core". A very fast song played with an aggressive attitude and it features one of the wildest guitar solos that Elliot Easton ever did. On a personal note I was sad when the Cars broke up after that album but there are circumstances as to why that happened. All in all, besides the personal issues, in hindsight I think they actually broke up at the right time. The quality of rock and pop music seemed to be going down and I couldn't see the Cars going through the grunge era. FWIW Ric Ocasek was still making solo albums in the 90's and he seemed to be carrying on the Cars legacy. Here's a website where you can read more about the issues the Cars were having towards the end: http://ultimateclassicrock.com/the-cars-door-to-door-album/

    • RE: PBS Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Beatles' Sgt. Pepper

Well, I had a chance to watch this Monday evening and what I thought was going to be an hour and a half show was actually 58 minutes and change. The rest was taken up with pledge drives, or as my dad used to refer to it, "begging". I'm glad it was on the PVR so I could skip right by that, although, obviously, I do understand why they have to do it. As for the show itself, I thought it was very well done and Mr. Goodall did a superb job talking about the songs, influences, recording techniques and the styles.

    • The real Sergeant Pepper

Note to MODs, I wasn't sure if I should post this in the "Yesterday" forum or not so feel free to move it if you see fit. It turns out there actually was a real Sergeant Pepper. His name was Sergeant Randall Pepper and he was a strait laced Ontario cop put on security detail when the Beatles were in Toronto to do a concert in 1966. He initially wasn't a fan but in the end he was charmed by them. You can read more about it here: http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/real-sgt-pepper-was-straitlaced-canadian-cop-no-fan-of-the-beatles-1.3439578

Cool. I still haven't heard any solo Beatle or Wings stuff yet. SurSteven I checked out that tunein website as well and it looks pretty interesting. Thanks for the link.

Was in Canada and an artist Luc de Larochelli?re came on... wish my French was better... It was a song about Travellers... Probably why it caught my ear lol. I'm listening to his album now, really enjoying it... This is a great fun site!!! Thanks Even if you don't understand the words, music is so universal, isn't it?

You're welcome. Yes, it sounds like a cliche, but it really is true that music is the universal language. Thanks for your comments SurSteven and Andy_Shofar. I'm glad everybody's enjoying this website. I was checking out some more European radio stations last night. It's sort of become a personal ritual now to visit this website! BTW I meant to ask this question, has anybody heard any solo Paul or Wings era music on this website? I mentioned at the start of this thread that I did hear "Ticket To Ride" (Beatles of course) on a station from Ohio but I haven't heard any solo or Wings Paul songs yet.

Just beamed in on Regina, Canada and they're playing Stairway To Heaven Waaaaaaaaaaaaay cool!!! "To Be A Rock And Not To Roll" George Town, Cayman Islands Hot Stuff by Donna Summer is playing

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. To pick up on something that love2travel mentioned, it seems like a lot of the stations, not all of them, play westernized/North American style pop, rock and roll, etc. I'll give you an example of this, a couple of nights ago I was checking out a station in Morocco figuring I'd hear some Moroccan music but what do I hear? A fellow Canadian, Bryan Adams, singing a ballad. I was checking out some Caribbean and South American stations last night and I noticed for the most part their music seems to be more local, for example, Reggae, Ska, Soca as well as various South American styles. I was kind of disappointed with Cuba. Only 2 stations were available. I was hoping to hear some lively Cuban music. Oh well. Glad everybody's enjoying this website. I'll be checking some more South American stations tonight.

KenMac it is really addicting...went to all of the places mentioned above and more. It was fun to listen to music in other languages too! Strangely, when in Antartica, a station from Alaska was playing there... Also zoomed way in, to certain areas, including my house and landmarks in parks, etc. The Chinese stations are blocked, except for one and Hong Kong.

I agree, it is addicting. I've been visiting the website every night checking out different countries. Tonight I'm going to check out the Carribean area, Cuba, Jamaica, etc. then maybe I'll check out a few South American countries. That's odd about Antarctica. I wonder if they have penguins running the station? Glad you enjoy it and I agree, it's nice to hear the different varieties of music.

Thanks everybody. SurSteven, it's interesting that you mention Hawaii as I was listening to some stations from there last night along with some from Alaska. Andy_Shofar, no problem. Wait until later. love2travel, glad you like it. There are loads of European stations to check out as well. BTW the first night I discovered it I was checking out a station in Ohio and they were playing "Ticket To Ride".

    • Radio Garden

This website has probably the most intuitive and innovative way of listening to online radio stations worldwide that I've seen so far. No menus, no countries to select. Just make sure you click on "Live" and the radio streams will pop up. Here's the website: http://radio.garden/ The other night I was listening to stations from England, Ireland, Mexico, Iceland (!), Australia and various U.S. and Canadian cities and towns. It's one of those websites where you think you might spend 5 or 10 minutes on but you end up staying over an hour.

Nice to see that Ringos Brother-In-Law, Joe Walsh, dropped by as well. Imagine if they formed a group with this lineup? Two ex-Beatles and an ex-Eagle. Hmm..maybe they could call themselves "The Beagles"? (Kidding of course.)

    • RE: RIP George Martin

I've already posted this in the "RIP" thread over in the "Talk More Talk" section but I figured I'd post it here as well. This is very sad news. I consider myself lucky enough to have seen Sir George Martin in person. He was being interviewed by Dire Straits manager Ed Bicknell at Canadian Music Week here in Toronto back in 1998. I couldn't have been more than 25 feet away from where he was sitting on stage and I remember him looking quite good for his age, which at the time was 72. There are so many moments I remember from that interview but one of the funniest was when George was talking about something music related, I forget what the topic was now, but then Ed Bicknell, who had various papers in his hands with questions written on them brought up the topic of the Beatles and George Martin said, "Forget the Beatles" and Ed said "Well there goes page 6 and 7". I guess George wanted to build up to the topic of the Beatles gradually. George came across as a very nice, intelligent, soft spoken man and a true gentleman. I was honoured to have been in his presence for that 2 hour interview and I suppose I shouldn't be surprised he's gone at the age of 90 but he's one of those people who you think is always going to be there. Thanks for the music Sir George Martin. R.I.P.

    • Exceptional performance of "Blackbird"

I'm a regular watcher of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert which is still taped at the Ed Sullivan theatre in New York and of course we all know who played there on February 9th, 1964. Anyway, this past February 9th, the Late Show did it's own mini-tribute to the Beatles with bandleader Jon Batiste playing an *almost* all instrumental version of Blackbird on the piano but he did a bit of singing as well. This is one of those rare cover versions of a Beatles song which is almost as good as the original. (To me anyway.) Here's a link to the video of the performance:

Over on Twitter even the great producer Quincy Jones was impressed by Jons performance. Here's a link to his reaction:
      Enjoy.
