As for "New" it's not a lovely meter he's made--what's that mean, Inspector Sands? Some of the "Freedom" lyrics always made me cringe, to be honest. I wondered if he was espousing going to war. I'd always thought he's completely and totally anti-war I chalked that up though to his being caught up in the 9/11 uproar-- he was right there in N.Y. when it happened. So the atrocity made even more of an impact on him. Also, New York seems to especially love him. And his Dad used to be a firefighter.
It's a punning reference to a Paul song of Sgt Pepper. As for Freedom, Macca said it was about how no one should take their freedom away, but he regretted it later got coopted by others to instill or force freedom on others ie neocons in Iraq.
