And this: What of Harrison? According to Damian Smyth, co-author of The Beatles and Ireland, "Of all The Beatles, it was George who had the strongest Irish connections by far." He continues "George had cousins living in Drumcondra [North Dublin] and he made a point of visiting them when they came over to play in 1963. But even before that, in the late forties and early fifties, the family would get the ferry from Liverpool to Dublin to stay with the cousins and go to places like Malahide Beach; I have photos of him there and [of him] walking down O?Connell Street with his mother. So there was a strong connection from the family point of view."

According to a few sources, it was George who was the most Irish, his family settled into Ireland in the 1200s. http://www.beatlesireland.info/Irish%20Heritage/georgeheritage.html

RE: A Conversation with George Harrison: February 15th 2001
I just love him soooo much!!!!!!! His voice alone was so calm and soothing and relaxing, and then the content of his speech was so wise and generous. It had me in tears because this was done days before his final birthday here on earth. Thank you so much for so kindly sharing this here, MetalGod!

RE: What Beatles Item did you last buy?
I got the Beatles in Hamburg, but before I could get too in-depth into it, Olivia's book arrived, and I had to read through that one completely first! Kathryn: from what I can tell just by browsing, it looks like it gives a good account of the time and place, the era, but few real anecdotes not already known. I still maintain the best books about the Beatles' time in Hamburg are probably books written only in German, and I wish some publisher would take the initiative to translate them into English, it would be a goldmine for them. I'm surprised no one has yet done so.

The Rolling Stone I have...so many other magazines I must get!!! But I think I'm going to have to wait a bit, so I can be sure my daughter has a good holiday in December. There is also a European art magazine called Lid, or something like that, George is on the cover in a never-before seen pic...oh my God, one could just collapse from the g(e)orgeousness!!! I'm also seeing, on ebay, old tribute magazines from the 2001 era when he passed away, and I'm wanting those as well! Maybe I can get one a month or something, til I'm all caught up. I want to collect and know everything I can about George, as best as one can indeed know George, who was basically unknowable. Who knows, if I get enough sources together, maybe one day I'll compile my own book! ops:

RE: McCartney's In The Town Where They Were Born
Kevin, I still desperately want this book, I went to the site, do you accept any other forms of payment besides PayPal? The PayPal account is actually my estranged husband's, I'd rather send a check, if that's okay. I have sent checks to the UK before, and they went through fine.

Kevin, I might order Beatles: Living in the Eye of the Hurricane, is George mentioned much in it?

RE: George's criticisms of Macca
It is about tastes, I listen to solo George over and over daily, I love the depth of feeling in what he says. He was so wise and humble, and his music so melodic! I have one Lennon solo CD, which I love when I'm in the mood for it. I need to aquaint myself with Paul's and Ringo's solo work, I'm in no position to say one way or the other there. Some of Ringo's work I do listen to on youtube if George was somehow involved in it.

RE: George's criticisms of Macca
Other musicians such as Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty etc hold George in very high favour. He was considered a musician's musician; they actually played instruments with him, they would know. Also musicologists who write books about George's contributions hold him in high esteem. Simon Leng's book is very good at dissecting George's talents, I highly recommend it.

RE: George's criticisms of Macca
Susy, here is Pattie in an interview speaking of the duality between George's spirituality and his excesses, the interviewer is Ken Sharp. Q: Discuss the duality of George. On one hand, he was a seeker of enlightenment and spirituality and the other he was having affairs on the side. A: George was a human being. He was human, terribly good-looking and very famous. He had his ups and downs. Temptations were thrown at him constantly. If you're gonna decide that you're gonna be a priest it's very difficult. I think George was far more aware than other people of the continual battle of one's demons...He struggled with it. He always wanted to be a good man and do the right thing. Q: In describing your two husbands, you describe George as your 'soulmate.' A: George was a true spiritual seeker. We had a very special friendship/relationship that would last all our lives. I knew that. George was always there for me. He was a sweet and gentle person. So what if he had demons. He'd been trying so hard to be good and spiritual. ********** I think George would have been far happier if he'd had more moderation in his life; instead, he was an all-or-nothing person. Pattie often speaks of how he was indeed capable of going long periods of time, abstaining from drugs and alcohol, promoting celibacy (even within the marriage, which couldn't have been easy on Pattie!) Then he'd bounce in the other direction and partake of everything again as if he couldn't get enough, then the long self-imposed ban again on drugs and sex. But even his spiritual advisers declared they'd never known anyone try as hard as George to be good, to want that so much. I will say that Paul's long marriage and fidelity once he did marry are one of the things that most impress me about Paul. When I want a true sense of who George was, I often reread his life from birth to about age 20, that I feel is the true core of who George was. After that we're viewing him through a filter-haze of drugs and unprecedented fame and the drama and the psychological trauma which seemed to happen to him with Beatlemania. But at heart, at his core, he was still that same George, apparently an uncommonly kind, thoughtful person; he was just trying to find his way to reconnect with himself.

RE: George's criticisms of Macca
I thought I read somewhere that John and Ringo kind of publicly put down Paul's first solo album, and that George said something nice about it?

RE: George's criticisms of Macca
The engineer Norman Smith said he couldn't believe how George was spoken to in the studio, how Paul thought George couldn't do anything right, and he gave George a lot of credit for all the years he put up with it. I guess in the remarks some keep referring to as angry and bitter, I see as pain. Pain is nearly always the emotion behind anger anyhow. What about the way John and Paul set about to systematically chip away at George's self-esteem, two people who were supposed to be among his closest friends?

RE: George's criticisms of Macca
George (and probably all the Beatles) also said their problems with one another weren't really that bad, but being in the public eye, the press magnified and distorted and exaggerated everything.
