I would love to get a new album from Paul. My first choice would be an album of all new material. Second choice would be an album of older, unreleased songs that we haven’t heard before. I wouldn’t be that interested in an album of unreleased songs that we have heard before because I probably already have pretty much all of them.
I’ve loved all of his recent albums so I hope there’s more to come.

I’m surprised people are mentioning Back to the Egg, I can’t stand that album cover, or the Red Rose Speedway album cover (I love both albums though). I like the Wild Life, Venus and Mars, and London Town album covers the best of the Wings albums.

I have been listening to this song recently, on both RRS as well as the "work up" track from the bonus on the RRS deluxe edition from 2018. An article that came out June in the Guardian for his 80th birthday rated the song 15th out of what the author sees as his best 30 post-Fabs songs. Writer of the article, Alexis Petridis, says it is "one of the loviest melodies McCartney has ever written." Superlatives follow-"utterly gorgeous, inexplicably moving. " Wikipedia has someone callling it "haunting." I have been a fan since the late 1960s and I recall when this song came I was baffled by the lyrics but found the melody beautiful but at the same time conveying the emotion of sadness, unlike most of his songs.
I have never considered the lyrics the strong point either and Paul did not include it in his Lyrics book from last November.
So what in the heck does this song mean to you? I regret he didn't include it in his Working Classical CD from 1999 and would love to hear that melody with full orchestra
Little Lamb Dragonfly is probably my favorite song by Paul, I love it. It's beautiful, but in a haunting kind of way, as you mentioned. Happy but with a melancholy tinge. It makes me think of the countryside, and I think has a little bit of a Celtic feel to it too.

Not surprising Paul can't pick a song from this century, since the best of his work was in the 20th century. That's more than enough to cement his reputation as one of the greatest songwriters. I've loved his work from day one, but for me Chaos and Creation was his last really memorable album of new material. The last few albums have gone straight in one ear and out the other. Every musician that has ever lived has had below-par work, even the greatest, and Paul is no different. But it doesn't matter - the sheer volume of his best work is amazing.
Your favorite song does not have to be one of your best songs, it is just a personal favorite. To me it was shocking that he could not come up with something like "My Valentine" which was written for his wife in this century -lol.
Paul could definitely stand to be more positive about his solo music (and play more of it in concert), but to be fair I think most artists would probably have a hard time picking out their one favorite song/painting/movie/whatever that they've made.
He probably just doesn't have one particular song that is clearly his favorite. I mean, I love his recent solo music as much as anyone, but I wouldn't be able to point to one song and say "that's my clear favorite" (because I love so many of them). He definitely could have sounded more positive though by naming a few songs or saying his most recent album McCartney 3 has some great songs, as others here have said.

RE: Leftovers and Rarities - New Package for Paul and MPL to consider for 2023

Now back to my favorite subject --
Just a brief sumary of what I'm proposing for a "Leftovers and Ratities" Project for Paul and MPL to consider for 2023:
1. Starter CD (1 CD with a tracklist of 16 relatively "unknown"songs.
2. Follow-up #1 (2 CD Package with 42 tracks for "Leftovers and Rarities" covering basically from McCartney 1 through Flaming Pie and Run Devil Rund. We're talking about the 70's, 80's and 90's time span. One additonal track I subsequently added to Follow-up #1 Tracklist was the "Live Version of Maybe I'm Amazed"on 1976's Wings Over America Album.
3. Follow-up #2 (2 CD Package with 40 tracks covering basically from Driving Rain to Paul's latest McCartney 3).
I personally have selected all of these tracks but there were a bunch more I could label as Honorable Mentions. Of course, we can quibble over a few of my selections but overall I feel the Packages I've listed above (Leftovers and Rarities) on the whole prove that Paul McCartney is a very unique musical artist (songwriter, musician and singer). I'm also considering "Longevity". I my opinion, Paul McCartney is the #1, 2 or possibly 3rd best modern Musical Artist over the last 50-60 years. I am thinking about artists that can do all 3 components... composing, a great and versatile instrumentalist, and singing (multi-styles).
From a full career (again over 50 plus years) I believe only Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are close to being on the same level as Paul. Personally as a big fan, I consider Paul to be #1. This "Leftovers and Rarities" proposed project is further proof that Paul is that Great of an Artist and Musical Force. On these packages and project, we're talking about close to 100 tracks that were not on Paul's "original albums" and many are virtually "unknown" to casual fans of the Beatles and casual fans of Paul's brilliant Solo Career.
Thanks for reading my post.
Paul is easily my favorite popular music artist, even his "leftover" music is great IMO. I wish more casual fans would give it a chance.

RE: Would Paul and Ringo ever tour together?
I don't think they'd actually tour together, but I'd be happy if they did. But IMO they definitely should not call it "The Beatles" though.

I'd be very interested in the soundtrack. I hope it's more of a collection of songs than a score, that way it could potentially be like getting a new solo album from Paul which would be great!

Nancy...we will have to agree to disagree. I remember when the subject came up about which songs Paul should play for the upcoming "Got Back" tour and a couple of fans were listing songs like "Monkberry Moon Delight" or even "O'h! Darling". Now for anyone to think that Paul could sing those kind of songs with his current voice is pure "Fantasy". I admit I don't know anything about the costs involved in releasing a new CD but what I'm talking about is using the same audios' of old songs when Paul could really sing is something totally different. It may not be a "realistic" idea but it's not pure fantasy.
Thanks for pointing out when Paul and his Run Devil Run Band did the "Cavern" Show. I was close but should have looked it up before replying.
I side with you on this one BJ. Your compilation idea as you put it may not be "Realistic " but I would not classify it as a "Fantasy". In fact, most other arists who have had a fairly succesful solo career after being in a famous group probably would welcome this type of project. I am a big Lindsay Buckingham fan and he embraces his solo career. He put out great solo anthology recording (3 disc) a few years ago. Heck, he even included two songs he wrote for movie soundtracks (Back To The Future, National Lampoon's Vacation) and added new song. IMO your idea is not realistic is because of Paul not truly embracing his solo career and wanting people to hear all of his music. As for Nancy's "Fantasy" mentioned on another post, "not going there" -lol. Just teasing Nancy !!!
It's too bad because this compilation should be very realistic. IMO it should be an obvious choice for them to release something like this, but unfortunately it's probably not going to happen.

"Agree 100% Yankeefan. My biggest disappointment with the Got Back tour was that, for the most part, Paul totally ignored McCartney 3. Just blows my mind that he would ignore his latest well received album. Where was the Paul from 1976 or even 1989 when he opened a new tour with a non-Beatles song. Find My Way would have been a great opener. So if some in the audience didn't know it...So What? Another missed opportunity! And for that matter, why not do 3-4 songs from McCartney 3 with the full band (including Paul's new "horn" section). That alone would have made McCartney 3 songs on the tour sound a little different than his studio versions."
Those tours Paul cared about being considered a "relevant" artist and said in interview that was why he was opening concert with "Figure Of Eight". Fast forward and all Paul cares about is satisfying the "first timers" and casual Beatle fans. Mind boggling that he did not try and promote "McCartney III" live especially with it being critically acclaimed. His team is so clueless they don't even try to sell "McCartney III" CD's at his shows -smh !!
"After this tour, my biggest question is...what is Paul's "love affair" with "Fuh You"? Of all the songs on Paul's "Got Back" Setlist, "Fuh You" would have been the first song in my opinion to replace. It's not that "Fuh You" was a hit. At least "Come On to Me" made the charts and did pretty well."
Simple answer was he did not want to try and rehearse different "Egypt Station" song. Like you, I dislike the song and IMO it makes Paul look like and damn old fool. Try talking or singing something "sexual" in front of your grown children and watch their reaction -lol. That is how I feel when I hear Paul sing "Come On To Me" or "Fuh You".
I totally agree that it's crazy he doesn't play more songs from McCartney 3, or from any of his newer albums really. So many great songs to choose from.
As for Fuh You, it's catchy and modern sounding so it's probably more likely to pique the curiosity of someone who doesn't know much about his music. It's not my favorite song, but I do like it (though I really dislike the title and wish it was "For You").

While Paul is releasing the "McCartney Trilogy" in August 2022, I don't consider it a "New Project". All MPL is doing is combining the original McCartney, McCartney 2 and McCartney 3 into one package. While it's a nice idea, it's hardly a "New Project".
Since the McCartney Trilogy is being released this August, I still love the idea of a "Leftovers and Rarities" project for 2023. This would be a true "New Project". I also like the idea from Bruce of keeping "Leftovers and Rarities" to "1" CD. By keeping the price of this CD to under $10.00 (starting Sale Price in the beginning) it would give a great low price for Casual Beatle/Paul fans to "try it". If successful (and I know it would be) Paul and MPL could create a future full set (probably a 2-3 CD Package) of "Leftovers and Rarities.
As far as the "meaning to the title", Leftovers and Rarities would cover Paul songs that never made it onto their respective original albums. And, of course, they would all be "Rarities",
Here is my 1 CD starter Tracklist:
Leftovers and Rarities
1. A Love for You - an early "Ram" take and later completed for the "In-Laws" Soundtrack. A great rocker!
2. The Mess - Live at the Hague 1972 version of an early Wings rocker with great guitar work by Henry McCullough.
3. Best Friend - Another early Wings rocker that this first incarnation of Wings did "live" in 1972.
4. Sally G - great B-Side to "Junior's Farm"
5. Waterspout - Unreleased song originally done during the "London Town" sessions.
6. Daytime Nightime Suffering - Another great B-Side to Paul's "Goodnight Tonight",
7. Rainclouds - Great B-Side to the huge single Ebony and Ivory. The late great Paddy Moloney from the Chieftains does the "Pipes" on the song.
8. On the Wings of a Nightingale - Paul's demo that he wrote for the Everly Brothers "comeback" album in 1984.
9. Yvonne's the One - Unreleased song from the Press to Play Sessions. Cowritten with Eric Stewart.
10. Flying to My Home - Great B-Side to the "My Brave Face" single
11. Loveliest Thing - Another great B-Side to the "Figure of 8" single
12. Love Come Tumbling Down - Great B-side to the "Beautiful Night" single
13. I Can't Imagine - Great B-Side to the "C'Mon People" single
14. Whole Life - Cowritten with Dave Stewart and released on the "One Year On"/Nelson Mandela tribute album. Best version in my opinion.
15. Home Tonight - Written during the Egypt Station Sessions but never appeared on the album
16. In a Hurry - Written during the Egypt Station Sessions but never appeared on the album.
I can't imgine this CD not being a good seller. Too many terrific songs that most casual Beatle/Paul fans don't even know.
I like your idea, the songs and keeping it to one CD. I will disagree with you that there is decent enough audience for this type of CD to make it commercially viable for MPL to do. Paul has enough trouble selling his latest CD's with them getting good critical reviews and being promoted. This type of CD is more for the people like us really into his solo career than the casual fan. This is why this project will not be done IMO or if done it would be after the re-issues have been completed.
This list reminds me once again how good Paul's B sides are and the best idea about this type of CD would be to give them their due as excellent songs . Once again, Paul amazes me with the selection of his songs when you see "In A Hurry" and "Home Tonight" did not make the original "Egypt Station" album. Both of these songs are better than "Come On To Me" and "Fuh You" but what the heck do I know -lol. Finally, I have always wished Paul would have done his own official recording of "On The Wings Of A Nightengale" and this type of project would be perfect for it.
Great points Yankeefan especially about "Home Tonight" and "In a Hurry"being better than "Fuh You" and "Come On to Me". There were a few more songs that I considered for this type of "Starter CD" for "Leftovers and Rarities".
One song I was thinking about was "Goodbye" the song that Paul wrote for Mary Hopkin. Not sure that Paul would legally be able to do it since "Goodbye" was written while Paul was still a Beatle. It was also a bonus track on the Remastered "Abbey Road"CD. I would think that maybe Yoko and Shawn would give their approval for one of Paul's Solo Cds if something like "Leftovers and Rarities" would ever come to fruition. Since "Goodbye" was a hit for Mary Hopkin and Paul was definitely the solo writer, I would love for Paul's demo version to be included on some sort of future Paul Solo album.
Another rarity song of Paul's I really like was "Back On My Feet" (B-side to Paul's "Once Upon a Long Ago"which I think was one of Paul's and Elvis Costello's first joint written songs. I like Paul's demo version the best and would defiintely fit on an album like "Leftovers and Rarities".
Finally a song that would be deserving is "Once Upon a Long Ago" which was a quasi-hit for Paul in Great Britain. Unfortunately it never was released in the USA so it is a "rarity" in many ways. If "Leftovers and Rarities" was released during the Christmas Season, "Once Upon a Long Ago" would be nice Christmas type "single" to release at the same time.
Great song choices! I think most casual Beatles fans have no idea how good Paul's solo music is and would be blown away if they gave it a chance. The issue would be getting enough people to give it a chance so keeping it to one CD is probably the best option.

I consider anything he did 1970 and on as solo. In other words, not as a Beatle. But a subset of that is Wings from 1971 to 1980. He was always the "star of the show" and only in 1976 did we even get to hear anyone else but Paul sing.
This is how I think of it too. Wings, Paul's touring bands, The Fireman, Paul and Linda, etc, are all sub-categories of "Paul Solo".

I recently listened to McCartney 3 again after a while, and I think it holds up really well with Paul's late career run of great albums. I've loved all of his later albums, and I keep hoping for another album even though it's only been less than a year and a half since M3.
Funny, I listened to McCartney III the other night for the first time since probably October, and still came away feeling... meh. Mostly it's not bad -- well, except Deep Deep Feeling, which is just torture -- but nothing on it soars like his best stuff. Even the tracks I like best, Women and Wives and Seize the Day, feel a little shortchanged by the all-solo production. Slidin' is fun but I find myself getting tired of it. There are Paul albums I love and a few I dislike, but M3 remains the only one I'm just indifferent to.
The ones I like best are probably The Kiss of Venus, Seize the Day, and When Winter Comes. Deep Deep Feeling is the only song on it that I don't like much, although I've come to like it a little.
In my opinion, only thing that holds M3 back a little compared to Paul's other recent albums is that it only has 11 tracks and the bonus tracks are not all new songs.
Song for song though, I love it. I hope Paul keeps releasing more new albums, the more the better as far as I'm concerned.

Exactly! What's wrong with playing these songs, or even a whole show for the "anoraks"? Particularly since if he wanted, he could do just one show of all solo songs, film it and release it on blu-ray. Sure we'd like to hear these songs live ourselves, but I think having a blu-ray of a concert like that would go a long way towards satisfying the solo fans.
Excellent point. Go to some small venue like the Cavern Club and do a couple of scaled down shows in front of family and friends. Record it like you said and do more than one just in case you want to do some editing. He could break it down to two 45 minute sets with 15 minute intermission. Make the blu-ray only available to members of this board unless sales warrant a bigger release. Most of the set list could be from the last 2-3 albums and then throw in a couple of songs from long ago. Example below of a set list that I would like and reasonable. Order of songs can be changed.
Set 1
-
Find My Way
-
That Was Me
-
Home Tonight
-
In A Hurry
-
Little Willow
-
Early Days
-
I Don't Know
-
Women And Wives
-
I Can Bet
-
Slidin
Intermission
-
Lavatory Lil
-
Friends To Go
-
Ever Present Past
-
Magic
-
Dance Til We're High
-
Dominoes
-
When Winter Comes
-
Somebody Who Cares
-
Every Night
-
Hope Of Deliverance
Encore
Run Devil Run
Seize The Day
Yeah, this is exactly the kind of thing I was thinking about. If he did this, he wouldn't have to use up spots in his tour set list, but we'd at least get to have a solo show in some form. I know I would love to have this.

After watching the full cam video of the complete Spokane show, I was amazed at the effort he put into his singing in Spokane. He was giving it 120%
You can quibble over the songs in the Setlist especially a few of them. The biggest frustration I had after seeing Seattle's Setlist, however, was the fact that he still only does one song from McCartney 3. I don't understand it! I really want to see how the full band (including the horn section) does "Find My Way". I would think it would be a little different than what's on the album since he did Find My Way by himself. As a big time fan, that is what I would want to see and hear.
On top of "Women and Wives" which he did very well at both shows, I want him to do "Seize the Day". Like "Husbands and Wives", this song has great lyrics. Again, I want to see how the full Band does the song.
Finally, I want Paul to do "Slidin" again from McCartney 3. I want to hear the full Band doing this great rocker.
Basically I just want to hear those 3 songs added to the Setlist and I would be very satisfied.
I agree very much with this. I was guessing before the show rhat he was going to do 3 songs from the album - because after all it is McCartney 3. I think these 3 songs would be great to see and hear live. It does depend on how Paul feels about singing them, if he can as a concert song - would sound good and there is enough energy in them to not lose the casual unknowing fan.
I think Find My Way, Seize the Day, and The Kiss of Venus are the McCartney 3 songs I'd most want to hear in concert.

Excellent point. Why bother asking if you are going to ignore it?
"Lazy" was a good description. How can his Band continue to play with him after continuing to play the same songs for this long.
I remember back in 2002 and 2005 seeing Paul multiple times at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia (indoor venue). At that time I wrote that Paul was the best current performer out there, I think Howard Stern made a similar comment. At that time his voice was very good and he did many Beatle songs that weren't done by any of the original Beatles in many yearsl.
I can hardly make that comment after the Spokane Show. I also would never call Paul "lazy" as I always thought he was one of the hardest working men in show business.
I'll give him credit for still giving almost a 3 hour slhow but I seriously doubt he will continue to get good reviews if he stays with the same setlist. He didn't need one day of rehearsing with this setlist.
I see some comment of how great is was for using one of Peter Jackson tapes from "Get Back" during the "I Got a Feeling" song. It wouldn't have changed my mind if I had been to the Spokane Show. How difficult was using the Peter Jackson clip to do. It still doesn't justify not doing anything new from his recent albums like McCartney 3 or Eghpt Station.
I thought I would never say this about Paul but last night he just "mailed" it in. Hardly any effort at all to giving the real fans any "never done before" songs. Even if one of the upcoming show were coming to a city near me, I would never attend. Sad to say from a huge Solo Paul fan like me.
I wish he would play a LOT more of his solo and Wings songs too. But oh well, at least we have those songs on the albums, and he's still making new albums and touring, even if the set lists aren't what we'd want them to be.
